Retained or Release

edited May 2022 in Football

As our season has now come to a close, the new job that the club needs to do is decided who they want to keep and who can be moved on.

It's my understanding that the following players are out of contract from the 1st July:

JJ, Stewart, Stockdale, GMac, Wing, Gape, Horgan, Przybek, Linton, Dickinson, De Barr, Pendlebury, Leathers, Parsons, Ram, Burley

Not sure on the contracts of Wheeler, Thompson or Taf??

Out of those, who would you keep (& on what deals) and who would you release??

  • Didn’t GMac sign a long term deal last January?

  • I'd release @trevor! Attitude not in keeping with the Wycombe thinking.

  • I imagine the following will leave:

Horgan - just hasn’t quite worked out on a consistent enough basis despite a good run-in at the end. With Mehmeti looking to make another leap next year, I think game time would be limited for Horgan

Pryzbek - Tyla’s successful loan spell meant he surpassed him as the #2, so unfortunately I think Pryzbek will need to move on unless he’s happy being #3

De Barr - great character and work rate, but not sure he’ll ever really have an opportunity at this level with us

Parsons - very raw, didn’t have very good loan spells. Bright in EFL trophy, but think he’ll be let go

Wheeler - I’ll caveat this by saying that Wheeler is one of my favourite players at Wycombe, so I want him to stay. But if he is out of contract, I think at this stage of his career he’ll want more game time than he has this season, so would potentially be open to a move

I think everyone else will be offered new deals (with the possible exception of some of the development players I’ve not mentioned above; I.e. Ram or Burley)

If we can keep hold of everyone else, and make a few additions, it’ll be another really strong squad next season.

  • I think De Barr and Parsons are both worth another year. We can work with raw talent.

i thought Dickinson was only on loan from QPR? So Adam is the de facto number 2 going into the new season.

    agree on Wheeler and Horgan.

  • So far we have unearthed one fantastic talent per season with the development squad (Mehmeti, Forino) so hopefully that continues. It does seem as though Horgan will likely leave. Wheeler is the consummate professional, and it is a little hard to read there.

I can't wait to see Nick Freeman back on the pitch, too - he is going to be like a new signing.

  • Horgan looked really annoyed to be subbed so early.

  • I don't blame him...he was the one player who was finding other Wycombe players with his passes pretty much everytime

  • Horgan had a decent game, strong end to the season for him…high work rate, which Gareth will rate. Does he have to loft every pass though?

  • It was a really odd substitution as the little threat we had he was knitting together quite nicely. He’ll be off as I don’t think it’s ever quite worked for him at Wycombe wing needed to come on JJ, Obita to left back and bolster the midfield.

Taf I feel may get an offer of Championship football, hope he stays though as he’s a classy defender. Hopefully Stewart to stay too. All development players can leave (except Forino obviously and Pendlebury probably) and possibly Burley but unlikely. JJ I’m happy to offer an extension as long as he’s a back up to Obita, not first choice. He’s a good guy to have around in any case. Wing I’d certainly offer a new deal but not convinced he’d accept. Gape a new deal for sure. Think Wheeler May move on.

  • Taf, Thompson and Wheeler not OOC either

  • And Dikcinson isn't on loan

  • Keep them all.

  • Just my opinion but I can't help thinking some of this is here and on other threads is all a bit too soon and grubby, not as bad as the crap Stocko is getting on Facebook as you might expect but the players deserve a bit of respect for their efforts yesterday and for the season and beyond. They don't need their families seeing all this. If we didn't defend brilliantly for the last dozen or so games we don't make Wembley.

Some hard decisions for Gaz, he should have an increased budget although not within sight of the likes of Sunderland, arguably getting out of L1 next season above of some of the historic juggernauts and speculators still around will be more difficult than staying up in the Championship where you can almost guarantee 2 or three clubs will have deductions.

It's not just a judgement on how some players have done remember, it's about who else is available, there will be some excellent players that get released just by being out of favour or by clubs finally looking to control costs so we will be fine and being a football player can be very transient, but remember that we are where we are due to the culture as much as any individual talent and be a bit grateful for those who have helped us get this far.

  • Also for some of the younger players it's ridiculous to speculate anyway, we haven't seen much of them and have no real idea what is expected from their development, releasing players who don't develope will be a necessary part of the scheme where players aren't going to make it but we won't know and it's really only speculation as players develope at different rates.

Might be stating the obvious but the players also have to want to stay for us to retain any of them.

  • Do we have to reduce our squad size? I have a vague recollection we were allowed a season’s grace coming down from the championship but next season have to conform to everyone else?

i could easily have imagined that

    (And I agree. Too soon…)

Keep anyone who wants to stay.

  • Mehmeti and Forino were freaks in the development cycle. There was surely no expectations that we would sign a development player from 9th level who would be a Championship starter within weeks or a lad from university who would be displacing 2 of the best defenders in the league with a couple of months. So the future of the other development players is harder to judge. One thing this club does well is patience. So don’t be surprised if a larger group of the development squad are given more time to … develop.

As for senior pro futures we will have budget constraints, more this season, so efficiency will certainly be key. We can’t afford too many senior ‘misses’.

Not as simple as that is it. Difficult decisions will have to be made. But that is the job of a football manager.

  • Hence the question marks over these players. Online sources has a range of different information

  • Yeah, and I think it's as small as 20 players aged 21 or over on 1st Jan 2022

  • If they are both out of contract (and I am not sure if they are) then I can see one of Gape or Thompson leaving, with us trying to keep Wing or sign a similarly more creative midfielder to slot in alongside Scowen. Also wouldn't be surprised to see departures from Grimmer and Wheeler - both of whom are the most consummate professionals but are clearly dropping down the pecking order and at key points of their careers, may want to be playing regular football. I wouldn't be surprised to see David Wheeler turning out for Exeter against us next season.

I would however, be absolutely gutted to lose them on a human level. We have a special club of people, all of them playing their part. I can't imagine any other club feels quite like it.

  • Mehmeti was a great spot, but your description above ignores that he was part of Norwich's youth system. He wasn't just some random turning out for his village side.

  • Not ready for all this yet. Amazed by some peoples ability to just moved straight on.

I'd keep them all but realise we need some new too.

    For another day

First comment on 2.1, here goes:

According to wikipedia the following are definatley out of contract:

    Stockdale

    Dickenson

    Przybek

    Jacobson

    Stewart

    Burley

    Ram

    Gape

    Wing

    Horgan

    Fischer

    De Barr

    Linton

    Parsons

Out of these players, I think that Pryzbek, Burley, Ram, Horgan and Fischer will all definitely be off. I think the others will all be offered new contracts.

I also think that Grimmer, Wheeler (if he is not out of contract) and Kaikai will be transfer listed because they have all struggled for game time this season.

Let's see what happens on Monday.

  • I thought Gape was an absolute shoe in release job before the Wing red card.

Since then he's put some really good games in and I think has earned himself a new deal.

I'd probably have Wing and Scowen as the best combo, but there's no certainty at all Wing will stay.

Thompson, Gape, Scowen and one other specialist centre mid certainly isn't over stacking that area.

Wheeler might need to look at going for a regular start though. We're not playing in a way to suit him.

Horgan is a real 50-50. Spent a long period of the season not starting, but played his way in later on.

    Just doesn't produce enough though.

  • Sadly the academy system in the upper levels mean you can’t throw a stone into a crowd of kids without hitting one that’s on the books of someone. So Anis being released by Norwich didn’t make him a stand out, I don’t think he even made the u23 squad. Which makes our scouting even more excellent on that one.

  • Is Nick Freeman still in contract? He was given a one year deal to aid his recovery.

  • Forino and Mehmeti have done brilliantly and I think or hope that is what we'll get with this kind of scheme tbh, if we can produce or just find and nurture one good talent into the team each year it'll be a job well done even if the others end up moving on to other clubs or out of the game, as harsh as it is for them nearly every kid in England wants to be a footballer and it's a bonus chance as most of them have been shown the door elsewhere before arriving. It won't always be the ones the recruitment guys expect who will thrive with a bit of focus and attention.
