  • Even if you don't count the merger to form United (later Albion), Burton had two separate League clubs in the late 19th century

  • Controversial but... Wimbledon (FC and AFC)

  • Yes to wimbledon

burton has not been correctly answered

  • 4 to get

  • By your own criteria, it has. Maybe I'm being really thick.

Give me the Burton clubs names

  • Burton: Swifts and Wanderers, who merged to form United, who later became Albion. There was also a Burton Town, but they were never FL.

  • Unless the 'upon Trent' not appearing in the name means it doesn't count

  • Aldershot Town & FC

  • You needed all four in one answer to get the Burton point

    swifts and wanderers

    united was a new club

albion was a new club although United (renamed town) did later merge into it

The town Burton then is top of this league with four separate clubs.

three more towns/cities - one is second in our league with three

  • Rotherham County & Town became United but originally separate

  • Stevenage and Stevenage Borough

  • Rotherham is correct.

  • There remain two answers - neither town or city currently have a league team.

one is in the north one further south

  • Stevenage and Borough is just a name change - not different clubs

  • Oops sorry @PJS - missed your correct answer of Aldershot

    Only one more

  • I think I know it, but I'll let someone else take the glory

  • Well phone is nearly out of battery and I’m off to bed shortly…..

  • I don't think it's the answer as it's just a name change, but I found it interesting that Hartlepool United used to be called Hartlepools United.

  • Glossop and Glossop North End

  • I think I found the answer by looking at an alphabetical list of former Football League clubs on Wikipedia, but it feels like cheating. Not one that you would guess unless you know it.

  • Both Hartlepool and Glossop just name changes

which other town has reached the towering achievement of having two league clubs named after it?

  • Then it has to be Accrington FC and Accrington Stanley

  • Accrington was got a while ago I’m afraid.

off to sleep any minute now.

hope the quiz has brightoned up the evening for some

  • unless there are any new guesses from some bright spark on the forum, I will reveal the answer in three minutes time

  • i’ve let everyone have their fun, so I’ll add:

New Brighton and New Brighton Tower

  • Well done @perfidious_albion .

Tower only played competitive football for four seasons - three of them in the league.

  • I did try to leave some little clues.

even I didn’t get @Chris clue though. Who is she?
