I don't think it's the answer as it's just a name change, but I found it interesting that Hartlepool United used to be called Hartlepools United.

I think I found the answer by looking at an alphabetical list of former Football League clubs on Wikipedia, but it feels like cheating. Not one that you would guess unless you know it.
