I hadn’t realised how musically diverse the Proms had become until I chanced upon what proved to be an outstanding performance by the singer Raye (or, to give her her full name, Rachel Agatha Keen).
Even as I write I realise that the performance was probably totally independent of the Proms but it should still be available on BBC iPlayer. Received rave reviews. Very enjoyable and relatable.
I know there are a few Nottingham raised Wanderers on here, so I thought some of you (or indeed anyone who loved the fanzine scene of the 80s / 90s) might be like to know that the back issues of Brian (Forest) and The Pie (Notts County) have been digitised and are available online.
As a Wycombe lad who's lived in Nottingham for 22 years now, i was able to attend a cracking launch event for these websites last night. Lots of football x selectadisc chat plus the largest concentration of Adidas trainers I've ever seen in one place.
I remember buying a copy of 'Brian' in Sportspages on Charing Cross Road in London because it had a free Sultan's of Ping flexidisc featuring a song about Nigel Clough. The song was called 'Give him a ball and a yard of grass', and featured the classic line 'He's a nice young man, with a lovely smile'. 'Brian' was hugely influential when a few of us started up The Adams Family back in the day.
Left Lion magazine (a kind of city culture fanzine that you can pick up for free) have also made a couple of short films about the fanzines and unearthed a brilliant student documentary project about an away day with County supporters, which were all screened on the night. They'll be available to watch online shortly and in no way do you need to be interested in either club to enjoy them - just a great slice of history.
On the off-chance there are some fellow Gasroomers with similar musical tastes to mine, and if you'll forgive the indulgence, I'd thought I'd share half-a-dozen songs which have been kicking my arse and inducing awesome aural orgasms recently.
SOFT PLAY Punk's Dead (the video is fantastic but beware; this is very sweary and worse still, features a cameo from R*bb*e fucking W*ll**ms!) | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMOgilf4WX4
just out of interest, @glasshalfempty, do you ever get home after a stressful day, put on your slippers and put some soothing Bacharach/David or Goffin/King tunes on?
@micra yeah, it is very broad, I always hear totally new stuff to me. Just a few weeks until it all kicks off, Radio3 broadcast every concert if you can’t make it live. I used to do 6-8 over a season in my footloose and fancy free days, still try and get to a couple each year, a year is incomplete without at least one.
on another bent, a friend is seeing Underworld tonight and that triggered a Born Slippy -> Swamp Thing -> Deliverance Banjo Duel interlude between the two matches today. Now I feel some Chemical Brothers coming on.
A young female colleague, back in the eighties, was a Chemical Brothers fan but in those days of course you didn’t have the instant access to stuff that we enjoy these days. So, somewhat belatedly, I’ll give them a try.
Aside from music, I’ve been meaning to comment on here about an excellent recent drama on BBC 1. Lost boys and Fairies. I quickly got drawn into it and mrs micra and I then watched all three episodes. I’m a real softie compared with my better half and found myself in tears more or less throughout the last episode. Brilliant casting, writing and acting, especially from Gwyneth Keyworth in what was effectively the last scene.
I read the novel. I can see it making a decent show, the idea was interesting, the writing so-so. So unless you can persuade me it’s the new Severance then I may have to give it a miss.

Thanks for this, tremendous stuff
I'm going to miss Inside No 9. The final episode had everything! Roll on the theatre show.
Anyone else watching Dark Matter on Apple TV? I'm really enjoying it.

Love a bit of Soft Play.
Not sure how heavy you like things @glasshalfempty but the new Thou album is splendidly brutal https://thou.bandcamp.com/album/umbilical
for goodness' sake, @MindlessDrugHoover, don't encourage him!
I saw Soft Play a few weeks ago, having not heard of them before.
They are certainly an interesting band to watch live, just a drummer who sings and a bassist. They make quite the wall of noise for a two piece!
They used to be called Slaves, under which name they had a modicum of success but changed the name for obvious reasons.
Very late to this party, but recently blitzed my way through the first two seasons of The Bear, and it's as good as everyone said it is.
will give this a go tonight on Sky Docs at 9pm
Nice one @MindlessDrugHoover I shall check ‘em out.

Thank you for making me feel ten years younger.

I had missed this album drop. I’ll be giving it a listen.
Oh and Brat by Charli XCX is as good as everyone says it is

Few do it better live than the chemical bros, festivals arenas etc , seen them a couple of times and they are brilliant.
I did their visuals at a few festivals back in the 90s. Nice pair of fellas.

It’s a lot more entertaining than watching England @Manboobs .
It’s slightly schlocky, but certainly more cerebral than most.
Like Sleaford Mods, did you just push start on your laptop and stand there bopping for 90 minutes?
No, it was a bank of Elf 16mm film projectors nailed to a plank running loops of film.
The projectors were running loops, not the plank. I think this England match had destroyed more than a few brain cells.
I suppose the 90's were the last decade a bit like the 60's.
Watching the grass grow is more exciting than watching England.
