Will be very interesting to see if Gape or Thompson get new deals. Perhaps a month to month contract for Thompson. Don't see too many takers for Gape given his injury record but could be worth chancing one more year for us.
If Vokes doesn't stay, I honestly can't see where he'd go. It would only be for a payday as a backup for a top League 1 or lower Championship team. Saying that....Connor Wickham....Cardiff.....
I thought it was read that Gape was in contract until 2024, so had a new look around the net.
The below doesn't have him out of contract in 2023, but he's not on the 2024 list either (whereas Young is sat there on his own for 2025). I wonder if he was on there for 2024, and now they've changed it to be honest...
Hopefully Vokes has been romanced by the area and the club and can deal with a more humble wage, but one that allows him to keep being a key player of a decent level club.
I dare say once you've earnt your big bucks, and had a bad experience or two elsewhere, a good environment is worth more than mere money.
Probably much easier for a lot of us on here to say though. Guys with relatively humble professions where we know we can probably earn similar for the next 20 or so years. Rather than have quickly running out years to max out on.
Freeman is another one. Not quite done enough but as a squad player is as good as you will get. I suppose you have to look at it from the players' side too. Why would anyone stick around to sit on the bench?
I believe the Vokes family have some ties to the south coast, so if he does move on I would be surprised if it is much further north. I'd be a little concerned if someone like Portsmouth showed an interest.
We renewed Freeman during his year injury, so I could see us doing similar with Thompson.
However, much depends on Gape. If it does turn out Gape is out of contract too, it'd be hard for us to renew both, when they've contributed about 15 games between them this season.
Will also be interesting to see what happens with Willis. Was he a guy to help us with numbers until the end of the season? Can he sustain a regular starting role?
Whatever happens we can’t afford to only have Scowen, Gape, Thompson as defensively minded cm options. We saw in the first half of the season how that plays out.
I don't think Transfermarkt includes them and I'm not going to work it out manually 😂 Sheff Wed have the highest, seems to be a positive correlation between squad age and league position - this season at least. And I guess that makes sense, but you've got to futureproof yourselves, so to speak, against the inevitable drop-off as best you can.
With Oxford, unless they can offer substantially more than we can for a veteran player with an average season hit by injury behind him, not sure Vokesy would necessarily swop one League One team (where he does not have any credit in the bank) for another myself.
He's from the New Forest, as is his wife. They were definitely thinking about re-locating that way due to the ages of the children and having more family around to support.
If Reading go down, then I suspect they become a serious option. Otherwise it's us, Swindon or Oxford at a push.
Might not be such a massive factor if offered a one year deal on decent money somewhere but we've got no idea if he has had other offers or wants to stay.

The bistros of Marlow will still be welcoming Jason McCarthy next season then! Good news. Does he live near Vokesy? Have a word Jase.
Can one of the thread stattos do a list of the current list out of contract?
Just do better than the BFP's woeful effort the other week...
Ooh, I didn't see this
Basically had 3 or 4 players who we know for certain are signed up.
In fairness, that's a lot easier than reeling off all the OOCs 😅
No I mean, they did reel off a long list, but included 3 or 4 in contract guys in there!
Ohhh. In their defence, we don't exactly make it easy to know players' contract situations.

There's nothing that suggests the deal he signed was just a 1 year last year, but then again there's nothing to suggest it's 2!

As much as I love Curtis Thompson, I just don't think you can take the risk anymore with his injury record.
I believe the Vokes family have some ties to the south coast, so if he does move on I would be surprised if it is much further north. I'd be a little concerned if someone like Portsmouth showed an interest.
But presumably those ties were in place when he spent the last decade of his career at Stoke and Burnley?
A year or 2 moving further north surely wouldn't be much issue to a much travelled footballer, with 30-40 years to live wherever afterwards?
We renewed Freeman during his year injury, so I could see us doing similar with Thompson.

Freeman was a one-off serious injury from a horror tackle - Thommo keeps getting injured. It's definitely one to weigh up carefully.
Yep. Though has Thompson not just had 2 long termers? And then probably a spell of knock ons because of them?
I didn't realise we had the second-highest average squad age in the league
Even if we include all the development lot?
Some tricky decisions and someone might end up with a bargain or two here.

I very much doubt a Southampton lad who is also a Southampton supporter would ever consider a move to Portsmouth.
Oxford I would be more concerned about as they are desperate for an attacking focal point with Taylor gone.
Gape is under contract until 2024.

Thought he was more Bournemouth based, wherever we went on pre-season (Brockenhurst?) was where he grew up. No idea about allegiances.
Didn't Dom Gape nearly sign for Pompey a few years back?
He's from the New Forest, as is his wife. They were definitely thinking about re-locating that way due to the ages of the children and having more family around to support.

Alternatively, Eastleigh in the Conference.

You can always rely on Gasman.
