What potential new target man striker do we think is going to be comfortable never playing if Sam Vokes is fit?
The likely answer is a very small pool of low quality players.
I think our priority should be Hamer - or someone equally adept at playing across the back four roles. Both full backs are in poor form. We have injury issues at centre half. Vokes likely to be back soon.
I fear the more likely scenario is no new signings.
With the thoughts/rumours regarding Anis departing eventually, what if it was literally about to happen for a sizeable amount and we had someone in mind as a buy-in? Just throwing a rock in the rumour pool but......!
If so that’s understandable. One to keep tabs on as Burton are in a bit of a state.
Interesting that GA subbed on McCarthy at left back for such a long period of the game at the weekend. There could be more to that… Not sure he’s entirely happy with JJ’s recent contributions. I certainly haven’t been comfortable with his performances since Gillingham away last season. Hopefully Obita is back soon.
Do we really currently have injury issues at centre half when Taff could only make the bench last week. If Wakeley is not considered good enough to be 4th choice then surely he should be going out on loan now.
We can only have a 22 man squad and in my opinion the emphasis should be on the front line where the injuries are more extensive at the moment rather than overloading the defence.
I disagree. It’s incredibly unlikely Mawson stays fit all season. Forino is also injury prone. JJ and Grimmer aren’t good enough at centre half for a playoff push - if that is our genuine target. Tafazolli is injury prone.
That’s all of our proven quality at centre half.
I am much more confident that Vokes stays fit. Historically, he’s never had problems staying fit. I just can’t envisage any decent target man willing to come in as a 15 minute sub all season.
How do you fit them all in a 22 man squad without leaving the front line short though. If you don't score goals you won't win matches even with the best defence in the league.
Sadly JJ is becoming a problem in that I agree he is no longer a viable cover at centre half and his lack of pace at full back is so easily exploited by the opposition.
If I was a top end central defender I'm not sure I would want to sign knowing that I would be on the bench awaiting injuries to Taff or Mawson and fighting with Forino. A Premier/top Championship club loaning us a central defender would expect us to be giving him regular minutes on the pitch.
Forino has come on leaps and bounds in the last few months so restricting his chances of starting is going to limit that progress. Furthermore he is unlikely to be keen on extending his contract with a potential loss to us of a potential transfer fee. If we did get a real top class defender in then perhaps sending Forino out on loan would be an option, as in my opinion he has to be playing regularly at his age.
I think that'll be us done for the window and we'll have to hope Wakely comes good. LB is a more serious concern given JJ hasn't got the legs for it anymore.
we need cover and its obvious , if Gareth does not make signings (striker and LB) then I feat mid table beckons for us , not because of our starting line up but cover in those positions
Doubt we'll sign a striker unless Vokes/Hanlan is long-term. And maybe still not even then as he clearly backs AAH - who looks to have serious potential. I'd accept mid-table if it means we're building towards a proper challenge next season 🤷
What your exchanges with @frequentstander do highlight is the physical vulnerability of all three of our key central defenders. We (as fans) are naturally extremely sensitive to that risk factor (given the number of players currently unavailable) but I’m guessing it’s a risk management are prepared to take.
With all due respect to Sutton United, I think the fact that Aaron Pierre has opted to go there is an indication that he might not have been quite the signing that one or two Gasroomers were keen on.
I shall be watching Jack Wakely with particular interest this evening.

Oh god, please don't tell me cancel culture extends to hypothetical football debates now
He’s certainly not a target man.
ww don't need Alfie may , think he is a 1 season wonder, we need a target man in vokes Style

Hamer would be an excellent signing, but it sounds like we've been priced out.

@Otter87 , can you stop shutting down @ReturnToSenda's attempt to shut people down, please?😉
Fact.
What are people saying about that?
When I mentioned Alfie May, I certainly didn’t see him as a target Man. I saw him as playing alongside Vokes in a two.
I know it’s a change to shape etc but we have done that already with Vokes injured.
Ffs
I'm on about those of us wishing to know being dismissed as 'entitled'
That could be extremely fun - Bayo & Kashket 2.0
I thought I was quite reluctant about blanking people but it seems I have reached the maximum number of 'ignores'.
I have obviously been seduced by cancel culture.

Pierre gone to Sutton. I was really hoping we would get him back.

Yeah I’d agree with pretty much all of that. It’s a difficult situation we’re in. I think the most likely scenario is that no new signings are made.
Pierre has signed for Sutton

A titanic from @ReturnToSenda. What is the world coming to !

Playing Wheeler/McCleary up front and leaving him on the bench is not clearly backing AAH for me
Tafazoli and Mawson are both injury prone enough that a 4th choice could be confident of getting at least 15 starts a season between the two.
Sending Forino out on loan? Whatever next.

It's never gonna happen.
That's what I thought
