Ainsworth and Dobbo to Shrewsbury...

  • Or the form he showed in 2020

  • It was very entertaining, let's not deny it. Those last 5 games before he left were the best I'd ever seen us play until Bloomsball this season

  • It was hugely entertaining in a blood and guts, high octane, non stop action kind of way - I’m not sure it was ever brilliant football but it was definitely fun to watch!

  • The majority will point and laugh at the daft haka video, but he dragged us to the Championship with a bunch of very average footballers. I don’t mean to be too harsh, but look at what happened to the League 1 promotion team once it disbanded… How the hell did Ainsworth get us up with that squad.

  • I remember @Shev doing a post about it (I think), and, in footballing terms, only three or four were at a higher level than when we went up, if I recall correctly. 4.5 years on from that night at Wembley and that number might be even lower!

  • Christian faith was an important part of that team.

So the power of prayer, I suppose.

  • With the Shrews owner reportedly keen to sell the club ASAP, wonder if Ainsworth was given some assurance on that and funding for January.

Just throwing it out there (half in jest) but might Couhig be interested?

Great to see Gareth and Dobbo back in management and despite their current league position (and the uphill struggle they face to stay up this year), if they are given time I’m confident it’ll be a good fit. Ainsworth thrives in the underdog role and I could see him building a small but effective squad who punch above their weight.

Not long until the Ainsworth derby in mid December!

Also the irony isn’t lost on me that whilst his new club are bottom of the league, his old club (us) are sitting pretty at the top. I do sometimes wonder whether Gareth thinks about what might have been if he hadn’t taken that QPR job.

  • Very average players? That’s a bizarre assessment. Those players are heroes, who together created history for Wycombe Wanderers, winning an unprecedented promotion to the Championship. I think they deserve a little more respect than that.

    Updated for your edification!

    HIGHER LEAGUE:

Paul Smyth - playing for QPR. ONE spot above us!

    STILL AT WYCOMBE:

    Matt Bloomfield

    Jason McCarthy

    Jack Grimmer

    David Wheeler

    Fred Onyedinma

    BELOW US IN LEAGUE ONE:

    Nick Freeman - Stevenage

    Ryan Allsop - Birmingham

    Gareth Ainsworth - Shrewsbury

    Richard Dobson - Shrewsbury

    LOWER THAN LEAGUE ONE:

Cameron Yates - reserve goalkeeper for Dundalk

    Sido Jombati - Salisbury

    Anthony Stewart - Ebbsfleet

    Jamie Mascoll - Folkstone Invicta

Giles Phillips - Hornchurch (on loan from Ebbsfleet)

    Dom Gape - Eastleigh

    Alex Pattison - Bradford

    Curtis Thompson - Grimsby

Jacob Gardiner-Smith - terrible long term injury

    Nnamdi Ofoborh - Swindon

    Scott Kashket - Hornchurch

    Alex Samuel - Ross County

    Josh Parker - Oxford City

    RETIRED:

    Adebayo Akinfenwa - retired

    Joe Jacobson - retired

Darius Charles - retired as pro, though worked for Man City and is getting his coaching badges

    Craig Makhail-Smith - retired

David Stockdale - retired, recently fired as Blyth manager

  • Ross County are in the Scottish Premier League, I'd suggest that's a higher level.

  • Very pleased for both of them - hope Shrewsbury stay up.

  • Celtic and Rangers aside I think that's very debatable

  • Seems a perfect fit. Hopefully they do well and looking forward to our game on the 14th Dec.

It's not easy getting back into football, especially if you have a stigma around you which I believe GA has. We know what he can do but to other fans and journalists they'd picture him and his tactics etc as outdated or not good to watch.

I know a couple of managers, 1 who's managed for over 20 years and over achieved in the football league who's not only struggling to get back in but struggling to even get an interview.

  • Gareth's interview on Shrewsbury's website was inspirational. Rare combination of integrity and leadership. Not hard to see why he was such a success here.

  • It will certainly seem very strange playing against Shrewsbury with two Wycombe legends in their dugout. I sincerely hope our fans give both of them the recognition they deserve.

It would have been great to have Dobbo back with our club in some capacity.

Saturday 14th December will be a very interesting day indeed.

  • Of course they are heroes. It was a culmination of a decade’s work. Superb personalities and very good in unique areas. I worded it poorly, but they were distinctly average for League 1 level. Ainsworth, Dobbo, the staff, the board, the cohesion and unique connections etc. made them achieve something that none of us will ever forget. Outstanding

  • To be fair, there were always a few Gasroomers who hated both the manager and team throughout the Ainsworth period whatever the success...and were quite happy to start again with Blooms.

  • I don't think anyone hated the manager, just the style of play. As one of those I wish him all the best in the new job and will be intrigued to see on the 14th the style Shrewsbury play with. I'm sure it will be a competitive match - though I'm sure Matt won't be looking to do anything other than demolish them!

  • Not at all .Just being brutally honest. They have been excellent servants and good players for our club but time unfortunately has caught up with them.

  • Fair opinion - I did not even think of that. It just sticks in my head what Alex Samuel himself said in an interview, something to the affect of the Scottish PL being a strange division, as the top is like lower PL, but the bottom is like L1.

I suppose I need a unique section for them!

  • Does this mean we won't be able to sign their left footed captains every few years now...?

  • Just reading through the comments GA made to local press today. They've given him an 18 month deal, he's moving to Shrewsbury, any potential new owner had no input on his appointment, he's turned down some offers between QPR and this.

Hopefully the two losses against us are the only blips as he destroys Birmingham and Wrexham promotion hopes. 😉

  • Shrewsbury v Wrexham is a local derby. Would be a great way for him to get the fans onside

  • I8 month isn’t the longest contract in the world. Is this because a new owner would want to bring his own man .? Every new manager says they’ve turn down other offers. Always a good one to get the home fans onside straight away. I hope him and Dobbo make a real success of this after all the shit at QPR.

  • All the best for Gaz and Dobbo except against us of course. Hopefully the shews players give him 100%

  • Feels like quite good fit.

First game against Birmingham is probably no bad thing. There's absolutely nothing to lose. Much better than a banana skin FA Cup tie or something like that.
