  • Every player has a price, and I’m sure the ownership team will know Kone’s.

When you consider the data modelling involved, they will be looking at how to maximise value and how to reinvest that elsewhere in other players who are undervalued to gradually improve the playing squad. It’s an approach that Brentford carried out a number of times when they went through the leagues. Often selling their best player at a high value and then reinvesting.

It may also make sense to hold off any sale until next season if we are in the Championship. Banking the profit then may be more beneficial from a FFP (or whatever is now called) perspective because we do not need the football fortune this season.

  • Every player does indeed have their price. If Luton (or anyone else) was to come in with an offer of £8 million plus then I cannot see a reality where we turn that down, even with our newfound riches. Any less than that kind of fee, and I think we'll hold on till Summer.

  • Just wondering, when do the Championship rules come into force? If we get promoted, will it happen in that first season? Will they still be looking at our finances from our seasons in League 1? Or will we get a few seasons to spend, compete before having to worry about that?

  • Imagine the jump from just over £3million on the first bid to £13 million next... that's some negotiation!

  • I like the last paragraph here. I am using it to reassure myself that the King is going nowhere until we sell him to a top end Premier League side this time next year for an unbelievable sum as he has carved open championship defences as if they were rotting fruit.

  • If Richard does go and I really pray he doesn’t, we should sign Smith and Knibbs from Reading.

  • I'm no fan of Sam Smith. Think he's fairly overrated, and spends most of the game diving. Knibbs has been strongly linked with Championship clubs this month, he'd be a great buy.

  • He'll hopefully be sharp enough to realise 6months as the main man in a promotion chasing outfit will aid his development a lot more than having to find his feet quickly in a struggling team, even in a division above.

But his agent will very obviously be saying you can't be turning down 3m + for a player and thinking 2k a week(or whatever) is enough.

You'd hope so. I hope that Rice et al. has written down a figure in pencil to shown both Kone and Low & their agents what they will be earning if we get promoted which is why they might hold out for us! Or with the contract "extension" he was given a £10K goal bonus

  • Yep - everyone hold tight, and the riches will come to us all.

Go up and if Kone scores a few championship goals his value will sky rocket.

Low would become more established with Wales and also command a higher fee etc

Let's erm, beat Northampton first though.

  • I don't think we will sell Kone, but if we do I still think we'd be okay. We create a lot, and Luabala and Udoh have often been stranded out wide rather than showing what they can do in the middle.

No way we would get the same goals per 90 as Kone, but it would be better than some think.

  • Feasible if we knocked the first bid back by telling them our asking price is 15m.

  • I think this is a very shrewd assessment. For what it’s worth, Robbie Savage (yes, that Robbie Savage!) thinks our latest signing James Berry, who played for him at Macclesfield, will ‘be a PL player one day.’

  • There's probably enough goals in the building.

I think a bigger challenge is getting all these new signings effectively into the style of play ASAP.

Especially in this middle position post Bloomfield pre new manager .

Staying as we are until the summer is an intriguing idea, could be genius could be a monumental risk.

  • I sense Rice will play hardball with Luton and turn down any bid . Kone’s value will be greater at the end of the season with hopefully another 10 goals under his belt. There will then be more clubs in for him and a bidding war will raise his price.

  • There's a chance the club are spending all this money this window in anticipation of Kone going for big money this month.

  • No way should we sell him this window, if in the summer he really wants to go then fair enough

  • I hope Athletic Newham have a sell-on clause

  • If they have, what a payday that little club could get but not just yet. 🤞

  • I have wondered this, hope they do and this response from Newham suggests they have, although it's not entirety clear. I can't believe Blooms would have left them without one.

  • Especially for those fans who have money on him at 150/1 for getting the golden boot.

  • I don’t think Athletic Newham have a sell on clause.

Im pretty sure that when we signed Dotse in the summer his former club mentioned in their statement that they were not entitled to a sell on or a transfer fee. I’d imagine it’s the same with Newham.

  • I think Athletic Newham need to employ @micra to sort out their grammar.

  • Or 250/1 in my case (Ladbrokes odds boost).

I've already booked a cruise in June, in anticipation of the payout.

  • Fairly certain this was in response to someone suggesting that we should send a team to play a friendly Vs Athletic Newham in pre season.

On the subject of Kone, the absence of @kipper is worrying me

  • Re-reading their post, I think you are right. Pretty sure Basingstoke complained that they received nothing when Peart went to Brighton. With all the money being splashed about, surely the club can make some sort of reasonable contribution, privately or personally? It's not the Wycombe way if they don't.

  • 150/1 here - the bet was made before full time in our pre season friendly Vs Watford.

  • A few thoughts

I think we should arrange a B team/U23 friendly against the non-league teams that we sign these promising youngsters from as it is highly unlikely that they will have been able to get a sell on clause in any deal - it is frankly the least we can do - it gives them the chance to raise their profile, generate some much needed revenue etc.

I would be very surprised if we let Kone go before the summer (the caveat I suspect is if someone offers £10m plus no matter what the data model/predictions suggest we will say thank you).

I am surprised we are not trying to get a decent (Champ/Prem) loan RB in for the restof the season as cover for Jack/Jasper given our experience this season with injuries. A perm signing would be lovely but it might be better to re-evaluate once we know exactly where we will be playing next season.

Of course I am definitely not ITK or maybe I'm Talking Krap

  • Unfortunately the Wycombe way left for Luton.
