  • I'm definitely surprised there have not been more outgoings. For starters, David Wheeler has been a tremendous servant of this club and deserves all kinds of tributes when he goes, but he is nowhere near the team right now, and it would seem only fair to get him some playing time.

The only thing that might be keeping Wheeler around is his versatile nature and that with him on the bench, you are covering a number of positions from a guy who'll run his socks off for the team and can do a job for whatever is left to play in the game. Yes, he's not a starter but can do a job for 20 or minutes & you'll know what he'll bring.

I agree that his quality is now dwarfed by others in the squad but his work-rate is second only to Scowen (in my opinion)

  • He is under contract and might be happy to stay.

If he asks to leave I suspect we would accommodate.

Think we are currently one over squad limit (??) so one player will need to either leave (on loan at least) or at least not be eligible to play.

  • We were until Tafazolli left. We are exactly level with the limit currently.

  • True, but I don't believe he has been even on the bench for any of the past seven league games, so it just seems like he is surplus to requirements right now.

  • Good one, Luton

It's clear that MB sees the strikers as a problem at Luton and he needs more goals to get them out of the hole they are in. I don't personally have a problem with him trying to sign Kone because its not an unknown, he knows how to get the best out of him and believes that he can get them the goals to move them up the table.

If a bid reaches an acceptable figure or Kone requests the opportunity to speak to Luton, I hope we have already got his replacement scouted and lined up and I don't mind if he's not Danish either!

One thing I heard from an interview a short while ago was something a Premier League club had. They listed all of their players and an acceptable figure on a white board, if that figure was met, they would allow them to speak to the new club. Some players didn't have a figure because they weren't going anywhere. However, there were several columns on the white board, as it got closer to deadline day, the new figure would be written in. Some players value would increase by 25-30% in that space. I wonder if our club has something similar (maybe on Rice's laptop?)

What I can’t get my head around is why Kone would choose to move to Luton now, rather than wait 6 months and have his pick of the bunch in summer? Luton could go down and Kone would be stuck in L1 next season, but Kone would have many Championship suitors if he waits until summer. Bloomfield’s opportunities were much lower in supply, so I understand his decision. I don’t really understand why Kone would move now instead of summer.

  • Ordinarily you’d struggle to see the gain for him v waiting for the summer, but he seemed to have a great relationship with the management team here and clearly whatever coaching they were providing worked incredibly well for his game.

Hopefully we’re more likely to play hardball with Luton given how the recent approach for our manager went down

  • I think it would all depend on the contract, if he was wanting to stay in the Championship, he / his agent would make sure there is a relegation release clause in there that wasn't silly money

That might not be much more than a sideways move at the moment, and I doubt they'd offer enough anyway. Not too worried about this one.

But they may offer us silly money to get Kone and significantly enhance their survival in the Championship.. Next season they still get parachute money from the Premier League, but will they still get the same figure if they end up in League 1?

No way Kone leaves for Luton for all the obvious reasons stated; anticipating a crazy last minute ‘Will Greig’ like bid by a Championship play off contender though. Someone could easily offer north of £10m

Back in the world of the sane, Wheels stays. He is on half decent wages with a secure contract, settled family wise, doing his EFL sustainability thing, so the last thing he needs at his career stage is living out of a suitcase at the Shrewsbury Premier Inn. It’s not always about playing on a Saturday.

It would have to get to at least 10m for us to consider selling this month. I'm assuming if he had a release clause, it would already have been triggered.

  • Totally agree with this. I think an offer like that would be necessary for us to consider.

  • Great as the King is for us and however much they want to back their new manager, I am surprised that Luton would risk a big wad of parachute cash and their Championship survival on a half season of L1 success. He would need to hit the ground running immediately. The question is will the management team be tempted by the figures being offered.

'Sam see if we can win the Northampton game without Kone...'

This late in the window I would hope not.

  • Kone starts and scores tomorrow, kissing the badge before putting on his crown. He's going nowhere this month.

  • Just can’t see where we would find a 20-25 goal replacement striker at this stage of the window. What would be the point of strengthening the team for promotion and then letting your top striker go. It just wouldn’t make any sense. We don’t need the money, although that’s incredible to say.

  • 6 million the latest Luton bid according to Pete O’Rourke

    *ML doesn’t need the money.

WWFC most certainly would if he suddenly pulled the plug.

In this exciting transfer time, let’s not forget this spending is utterly unsustainable for Wycombe wanderers as an entity on its own.

I am Minded, in the light of Drcongos post yesterday that we should be mindful of the other side of the coin when it comes to this laissez-faire approach to club signings.

  • There's got to be a number we'd be mad not to sell at.

No idea how close that is but 6m is huge!

Not sure what our record sale is but has to include a sell on, maybe Ibe at about 1.5m?

  • I wouldn’t sell him for anything less than £10M as we would be risking a shot at promotion with all the additional revenue that brings with it.

  • £6M is about where I’d be biting at, but given there is another week of the window and Luton have Sheff Wed away before deadline day then I think I’m inclined to reject it - depending on the full contractual details.

  • He'll still be worth as much in the summer, maybe more if we go up

  • ML has splashed the cash recently as he knows we have a very good chance of going up , a successful businessman who is not stupid . He won’t throw this away for 6 million as daft as that sounds , gone are the days when we were shafted by Blackpool over Matty Philips.

  • I think if we get an offer in excess of £7.5m plus add-ons we might well be tempted, but I do think the calculation is going to be as follows:

    a) Keep Kone in the hope that he helps us to one of the automatic promotion spots, thus guaranteeing us an additional income next year of the increased TV money (c£7.5m) plus increased commercial & match day revenues (my guess is a minimum of £2.5m)

    vs

    b) money now & possibly in the future from selling Kone but reduced chance of making it to the Championship

I know what I would prefer not only as a fan but with my business hat on.

  • All the Dan Rice haters will be loving him or should be loving him if we keep Kone. We would definitely have taken the second bid by now with the old owners.

  • Sell-ons may play a part. Who knows what will happen but the fact that Luton appear to keep coming back suggests we are open to offers. I’m sad to say I think the King will be playing for someone else by the end of the week.
