There's clearly a mentality issue: we're 13 points worse off based on second-half performance compared to first-half performance. That's the worst differential in the league - by a fair distance. Why are we setting up to not lose rather than to win? With a few exceptions, it was the same last season.
Agree with that. If we're going to insist on playing this shape, it should adapt depending on which wing we're attacking up with the wide attackers moving into the box when the wingback is forward. Ideally I'd like to see us go back to the thing we did in the latter Championship games where if the left wingback was flying forward the right wingback tucked into a right-back position and vice-versa, so we were playing four at the back when attacking, and it usually meant there'd be two forwards in the box. It made us so much less vulnerable to counter attacks and gave us better attacking options.
I have no problem with people expressing opinions, I do have a problem with someone assuming they know my opinions. Nowhere did I express the view that people should have ‘kept their mouth shut’, those are your words not mine.
You sign for a club, that already has 3 experienced and able holding midfielders, but with all 3 out, and you can't get a sniff !!
We are wide open to the counter attack through the middle. Neither Freeman or Wing have the defensive alertness or rapid acceleration to play this role. At 22 Jack is not an untried kid, and he must be concerned where he fits into the managers plans.
I thought Young had been injured for most of the season, but he actually played v Peterborough in the pizza trophy the other week. Very odd. He only signed a three-year deal earlier this year.
There's a video on Facebook showing their goal yesterday, must say, looks like it might have been over the line, Max knocked it forward slightly and the ball clearly bounced on the line, so must have been over. Also, what the video clearly shows is that Max wasn't being pulled by one of their players at all
The problem with the wing back system is that we haven't got wing backs to play there. The other problem with our wingback system is that we play wingers AS WELL. So we have 4 players out wide in total leaving the middle exposed.
I thought the point of having wing backs was to get up and down and put the ball into the box for 2 strikers, or 1 striker with 2 x AMC behind?
I'd be interested to see where most of our goals conceded have come from @ReturnToSenda ? i.e. left/centre/right
I think there is a serious point about how GA uses substitutes. GA tends to leave a team that is winning on the pitch and leave substitutions until later than most managers. I believe that this season with 5 substitutes there is much more scope to make tactical changes and changes to cope with tiring players or players that will tire, or indeed players on a yellow. You can see other teams have set out and planned to do this as part of a proactive Plan A. I don't think we have done that yet, but I think we have a squad and team spirit which would enable that.
So to follow @ReturnToSenda's point - I think it is not so much "setting up not to lose" but by being more vulnerable than last year to opposition teams setting up to change things sometime in the second half.
Mischievous question as I was obviously talking about Gareth Ainsworth, but since you ask I did respect Alan Smith’s record when he joined us but I lost much of that respect due to the opinions he subsequently expressed.
We never make subs before 70 mins. I don’t think we have adapted to the new sub system. Bring on Hanlan for McCleary at 60 minutes yesterday we win. He put their defence under pressure and pushed them back. They looked worried. The game ended.
Totally different style of lone front man as well as well as some strong midfield options...eventually , not the with all due respect Pattison/Bloomy first month.
For that distinct period in time, it worked superbly.
There may be some valid reasons to keep the chosen team together for as long as possible but with the new rules you're inevitably going to be playing tired against teams that have freshened up and changed formation as the game goes on.

But of a collector’s item @eric_plant but I agree with you wholeheartedly.

The WB system also worked a lot better in the Championship because we had Fred Onyedinma

You took the words out of my mouth, @ReturnToSenda . McCarthy on the right, Fred on the left worked a treat.
I mentioned on another thread how big a blow I thought the departure of Fred and Uche was.
I think we will win the FA Cup this year
Jack Young ??

He played in the EFL trophy game 11 days ago.
I spoke briefly with him yesterday and he has been injured.

I had a reasonable view and I thought it had crossed the line. Not sure who was defending the near post, but didn't do terribly well.

I would think that a lack of cover in front of the back three has accounted for a few
Did you respect Alan Smith's opinions when he managed us bearing in mind he had managed a Championship winning team (old 1st division)?
I'm not sure about locations, but we have somehow only conceded one goal from a counter-attack.

I would imagine so, he was very effusive in his praise of him when he was unveiled as our new manager
Like most people at the time I thought Alan Smith seemed a good choice given his record as a manager, didn’t you?

That new Subs coach role must be a cushy number !! So much as, you could do it from home. Send an email to the managers phone on 70 mins once a week.
I wonder what the salary is ?
Yep.
Clearly some of the gasroom's finest know better.

I was one of many who had something to those words printed in the BFP as a teen...
Let's not talk about Smith though. The mood in here is already a bit low.
What in particular do you usually disagree with? (apart from Vokes)

I think Gaz will make a few changes for Tuesday.
He might rest Vokes and one of McLeary or Freeman.
I think Hanlan and Horgan will start.
And maybe a back four without JJ.
He should do, but you wonder if he'll instead rest players for the fa cup.
