All this talk of centre back knees who was the lad who came in about 10 or more years ago to be , I think skipper, at centre back but had to retire almost immediately as his knees couldn’t cope?
Oh and who was the rally good full back who had to retire around the same time with persistent injury?
Yes, that would’ve been Michael Duberry, 13 years ago. According to the ever reliable Wikipedia he played 18 games for Wycombe before leaving “by mutual consent” in February 2010. Remarkably, he went on to play a total of around 100 games for St Johnstone and Oxford United before Hendon took only 4 games to suss him out (allegedly).
Duberry an incredible ability to head or kick the ball in directions that didn't look possible. Never the direction he or we wanted it to go in though.
And the 6-0 drubbing at Huddersfield (sadly on TV) alongside an extremely tall young defender (whose name escapes me). The young defender outshone (!) Duberry during that nightmare of a match and went on to have a half decent career.
The name will come to me when I least expect it to.
Thanks for that, hadn't heard anything of that detail. Well worth us helping his training and recovery along and would love to see him make a comeback if he can. Injuries can be a real downer for a player without the right support and I think often players retire when they just don't think it's worth the hassles, pain and effort anymore. Darius very much the model of what is possible.
If the above is true you'd think we still need one more in at least, Forino was great at times and you'd probably not be nervous about him starting alongside Taff but it's a long season.
Seems to be player wedding season and still many on holiday so patience is going to be needed for a while yet.
Would anyone be interested in having Paul Smyth back? I thought he showed potential a few years ago. He's had a few more injuries since then, but apparently he had a flying spell at the end of last season for Leyton Orient. He's supposedly got another year on his deal. I'm sure we're keeping an eye on him.
No idea if they were actually anything like each other, but I tend to remember them together as they both played for Chelsea and were both with us roughly around the same time - I think? I'm getting old.
Pay if you play may well be a financially viable option for us, or anyone else (who may offer him more per play anyway), however in all scenario the club offering the contract also has to factor him into the 22/25 man named squad which limits option to name someone else.
I think it would be downright insulting to offer a player of Alfie Mawson's calibre a pay-as-you-play deal. That kind of contract is as good as extinct in the professional game. This isn't the Spartan League.
Doesn't matter what calibre he has if he won't pass a medical.
Usually these things are much more casual anyway, train with us, doesn't cost anything , chat again in a few weeks.
I remember speaking to Nathan Tyson at the pre season game when he came back, he wasn't really trialling for us, he was testing his fitness and seeing what offers came and wether he wanted to continue.
If someone else wants to swoop in and offer him a two year deal on good money then fair play to him, if not but he builds up fitness here and can do a job then maybe it's worth a go, and we'd step it up to a 6 month or longer offer as appropriate.

His knee could be the key to us getting him though, clearly not nice that it’s scuppered a career that could have had England caps though.
Or maybe the Aberdeen kit?😉

I only wish this happened to Michael Duberry!
I know he is also an Abberdonian but Don Masson is now 76, good player in his day, but cant see his playing league 1 next season.
Was it Adam Hinshelwood?
Adam Hinshelwood? Came in as captain but only lasted a few months

Don’t recall the injury prone full back.
Whoops! Adam Hinshelwood posts came in whilst I was index finger tip tapping. My finger can’t keep up with my brain (and that is saying something).
And now I am reminded of that performance by Duberry against Norwich. Spoilt my day ....
Was it Duberry who had the turning circle of an articulated lorry or was that Frank Sinclair?

Luke Oliver?
Yes Luke Oliver, and he was terrible, shows how poor Duberry was (when players legs go boy do they go).
Oliver went in to have a good career at Bradford though.

"Why always ex-Wycombe players?" and all that....

He's basically a downgraded version of Daryl Horgan.
Dave Winfield wasn't exactly quick in the turn!
Decent centre half and leader though, I liked him

You're forgetting the obvious - his current wage is zero. We'd be a big improvement on zero.
Max Müller probably trumped the lot.
Had heard similar (albeit maybe from you before), which is why I didn't think it was anywhere near out of the question as per previous comments.
If he's got severe injury issues, and having been near flawless for us first time round, it could just be really disappointing for all parties.
However, if we're well aware of the issues, then any bigger club capable of offering higher wages would think in the same fashion.
So one of these rare pay as you play deals may not be out of the question.

Does this favour us?
I have absolutely no idea ...
I think it would be downright insulting to offer a player of Alfie Mawson's calibre a pay-as-you-play deal. That kind of contract is as good as extinct in the professional game. This isn't the Spartan League.
And why would we take up a squad space with someone who might not play 75% of the season.
Doesn't matter what calibre he has if he won't pass a medical.

Well if he doesn't pass a medical then no one's signing him, insulting terms or otherwise!
Quite. We're past the need for that.
