I asked before, but when did 4 and 6 get switched? I clearly wasn't paying attention. I feel that at our level 4 is still the defensive midfielder, seeing as Gape and Scowen had the number back to back. The 6 seems like a PL revision of history, but I can't figure out when it changed.
Although, if someone talked about a player as 'a 6', I'd instantly know they meant a holding midfielder - whereas if they referred to someone as 'a 4', that wouldn't really mean anything. Funny old game...
I guess it's because most modern midfield are some for of 3 and each player's role is at least slightly different - so there's more need to differentiate than there is between CBs. And referring to right and left-backs by their numbers would be weird as they already are what they say on the tin.
I know we dont have the required four quality players for every position to insure against every eventuality during a football season...but I think we're doing okay so far.
"100 - Adolfo Bautista at Chivas de Guadalajara. The Mexican striker and football fashionista was the first man in the history of the game to wear three digits on the back of his shirt."
"...Hicham Zerouali, a Moroccan footballer who wore jersey number 0..."

What number is the other player in the front 2 then? 😘
To complete the list, and stating the somewhat obvious (I hope).
For me ...
Number 1 the goalie
Number 2 the right back
Number 3 the left back
Number 5 a centre back
Number 7 a right winger
Number 11 a left winger
6/8/9/10 are the only roles you really hear referred to by number these days. And I suppose 1 in a way...
I think a false nine should be called a nein.

4 and 6 are interchangeable between CB and DM I think

Nobby Stiles was 4 for England, Bobby Moore was 6.
Alan Mullery 4
Jimmy Greaves 8
Asamoah Gyan 3 is one of the most outrageous
Or that Olympiacos lad from the mid-00s who played with #1 as an outfield player
That would be a number 10, but not necessarily the same number 10 as the creative attacking midfielder. Simples
Harry Kane wears 10 for Spurs but 9 for England, just to muddy the waters even further...

Milan Baros 5. But I have a dejavu feeling to this topic and my comment.
Pretty sure back in the 70s players like Keith Mead (centre back) wore 4 and Terry Reardon (midfield) wore 6 and that for me is the ‘correct’ way
What about Keogh? Can't he play at Centre Mid. I know he's 38 but if push came to shove.....
Didn't a Wolves keeper wear 11 a few seasons ago?
Also Andy Carroll wears No. 2 for Reading
Wait until you find out which number Ossie Ardiles wore in the 1978 World Cup
Did they just allocate the numbers alphabetically?
I think Wolves took the number 1 shirt out of use while Carl Ikeme was going through cancer treatment
Roger Hunt 21, Martin Peters 16
Root 66
Here's what a bit of research can do...

Dave McCracken wearing the number 7 shirt was frankly offensive.
36...36.
Let's not do the classic fan thing of aging our players.
He's 37 in a couple of weeks
So to be sure, currently he's 36.
Not 38.
He's 36 until he's 37, that's how it works
