You've seen players get good moves for less, his highlight reel should include some nice touches and a great goal in addition to his defensive play.
Wonder if we're still at that posturing bit and all hell breaks loose in the next couple of weeks when people find they aren't in starting elevens and get nervous for the season, and teams start to lose games and Rip up plan A.
Ollie Rathbone leaving Rotherham. All the other favourites in the division think it won’t be them. Could Wycombe have put some big money together to get him? Feels like the kind of profile we’re missing.
The idea that any of this is about improving Kazakh football got a lone mention in a dubious translation of an article in Kazakh. Hardly him being “clear from day one” unless you’ve got plenty more sources. Didn’t he also deny this recently too?
Looks like the Ollie Rathbone move to Wrexham is a done deal pending a successful medical. What is the deadline for registering a player with the league in order to be eligible for the next match? Is it 24hrs perhaps or a flat midday the previous day or some other measure? Doubt he will be lining up against us in any case, unless Wrexham feel he can slot straight in to their system.
As Dom wasn’t even a glint in his father’s eye until the summer of 2004, I thought there might have been a typo.
But a year in the footballing life of a 19 year old can lead to prodigious development and I, for one, would be delighted if we were able to sign him. Three goals in ten appearances for Reading before his injury at Adams Park speak for themselves.
@micra - Dom played for Wokingham District under 11 for two seasons when my son was managing them. Dom was a real standout player although he started playing for them a year earlier than most.
It all sounds extremely positive. The disincentive for the lad might be the fact that, with (at least on the face of it) the increase this season in competition for goalscoring positions, the lad might be deterred by a perceived lack of opportunities. But if Reading had sufficient confidence to play him ten times before his injury I would have thought he’d be well in the mix.
Although I think 95% of us were happy when a slow and steady approach was being taken, no silly spending... no rush.... sustainability.....
Yet.... am I alone a day before the season kicks off thinking..... oh ok.... I thought our billionaire might have chucked a little cash for maybe one otherwise unattainable player?
I understand this is having cake and eating it.... I just kind of half expected/hoped-for it??
Probably a good sign that they are sticking to their guns though I guess 🤔
If the owners were going to spend at some stage in the five year plan they’ve outlined I wouldn’t want it to be in the first season - especially this year when everyone’s throwing money. Infrastructure and staff first. Then players. I’m very pleased.
They seem like they know what they are doing so far. I liked Dan Rice talking about how analytics will be used throughout the club too (concessions, commercial, etc.) for a methodical approach.
I would love to know more about the data evaluation procedures. I wonder if they’re consulting an econometrics provider. I assume I’m in the minority with that though. Would love to have a few beers with Dan Rice and discuss the data.
I love figures and generally handle them competently enough but when it comes to the kind of stuff that @flymofrank revels in I am definitely in the @EddieMonsoon camp.
I’m never going to have a pint with steely Dan Rice in any case.
This season I’m happy with the nature of the transfers. Established league 1 players probably already picked out by Matt and his team rather than deep data dives.
I have modest expectations for this season so chucking money at stars never sits well with me. We don’t do stars we do collectives.
The loan market will be interesting. Potts and Eze top end loans or Taylor and Campbell loan but we might buy.
Thats a shame. Exciting player there. But I am sure if the data showed he was right we would have pushed the boat out for him. I do wonder if the guaranteed game time thing might be an issue with loan players.

Are work permits at League One level a given or would it make life easier if were a Tier2 side?
He’s going to end up at the PNLs isn’t he… :(

It’s Wrexham (of course it is)

He talked about it on a recent podcast that someone in here linked to.

Yes typo - well spotted.

The key phrase for the lazy:
The transfer is pending EFL approval – Rathbone will not be in the matchday squad for tomorrow’s opening game of the season against Wycombe Wanderers.

Ohhhh I like it.. a very reasonable and thoughtful answer 👏 👌

I hope @flymofrank is well!! Long time since I've seen a post
I thought Dale Taylor did just fine for us. He played 46 games (wow!) and scored 9 goals and was probably a better 10 than a 9.
Always worked hard for us.
Now don’t get me going on Lyle Taylor's efforts for us!
Totally agree! We had found his correct position by the end of the season.
He’s not been on the site since May 19th.

I can see another 3 or 4 players coming in yet. Others may also leave of course
Looks like Gideon Kodau is going to Exeter if rumours to be believed. Would have liked him returning to us.
Thats a shame. Exciting player there. But I am sure if the data showed he was right we would have pushed the boat out for him. I do wonder if the guaranteed game time thing might be an issue with loan players.
He's probably discovered girls.
He wrote the preview for Wycombe in FourFourTwo, good stuff as usual
