Apparently he is not and never will be a target man but apparently his lack of success is the absence of a small forward playing off him as target man.
Honest and hard working no doubt but personally I think he might be a division or two above his level.

You could have a target man with Samuel one side and a small forward the other in a narrow-ish front three. Samuel has generally been most effective on one side of a three (see QPR away last season). It's not a commonly seen role, but it has its uses.
I could go either way on Samuel's future with the higher quality squad we have now, but one thing I will say is that it is amusing when anyone says a player cannot help us compete for promotion in L1...when they have already played a significant part in us getting promoted out of L1.
Personally I don't think he'll play that much this season, but I suspect he's probably ok with being a bit-part player, and it's not like he's wasting a space in the squad.
You could do lots of things. Honestly though while he is seemingly a fine human being with a faultless work ethic, I think more likely to win more games at Lg1 without him in the team than in it.
Improvements are always welcome but if you think we suddenly have the budget or the pick of talent to have good players fighting over eachother for the 3rd placed Target man position at Wycombe you'll be a bit misguided.
No need to chase players out of the door who might come in useful. We don't tend to stand in the way if our best players want to go up a division so we're unlikely to deny a fringe player a move if they get a better offer and a chance to play regularly.
The Samuel thing is kind of funny now, he's nowhere near first choice, won't be on much £ but Gareth obviously trusts him to do a specific job in some games or parts of games and will call on him when he wants.
It is bizarre people still chunter on about Samuel, even when he's barely playing.
Do those people think he's blocking us from signing Aguero or someone?
Samuel’s a keeper for me. A nightmare to defend against with his in your face closing. Opposition defenders will not be as competent on the ball as last year and when we face a team who likes to pass it out from the back despite their defenders being terrified of the ball Alex is your man.
Clearly a talented player but Wigan can afford way more than us I’m guessing and well done to the club for not signing a player at ‘any price’. It was always inevitable that a bid up process would start when it went public.

Not that clear tbh.

In before some "wag" says he won't get in over Stockdale.
I'd keep Samuel over Kashket, but hey that's just me, I know others won't agree at all.
uche scores again ...guy is class
A penalty too. That’s a confident guy, the last one I saw didn’t inspire me.
A penalty as well - anyone else surprised he would be their first choice pen taker?
Why would you choose Samuel's over Kashket, what does Samuel's offer apart from hard work and falling over. Kashket is quicker and has an eye for goal
I was biting my tongue @Malone and now have to bite it a second time. Getting pretty sore.
Samuel's what?
That was the first one where I decided to hold back. No prizes for guessing the second one!
We don't have to choose Samuels over Kashkets do we? I like them all.
I'm just glad we've got Voke.
If it's a short version of goalkeeper, you put an apostrophe before it
The Samuel v Kashket debate is fairly valid in fairness.
About which misspelling of their name is more bloody annoying.
Although in the frenzy of excitement mid match yesterday I did accidentally write Stuart.
Whoops.
Wigan fans on Twitter seem to think they've "hijacked" Wycombe's deal for Lavelle.

Only fair - we hijacked their deal for three points.
That would explain Gaz's post match comments about continuing to spend big.
I assume he meant McClean but you might be right
It’s probably a much better move for him geographically too. If they are in for him I think we’ll struggle.
Surely @samuel’s is a short version of goalkeeper. He has the missing apostrophe, anyway.
Yes, he's not really big enough to be a Goalkeeper
