A couple from way back. Walton and Hersham away in the FA Cup 3rd (I think) qualifying round in 1972. Went behind very early on, never managed to get back into it. I got thumped by a Walton 'lad' during the second half, spent the rest of the afternoon in the medical room with a badly cut and swollen eye.

Was it definitely a Walton lad and not a Hersham boy? You can tell them by their laced up boots and corduroys.

  • I met Jimmy Pursey on leafy Hersham green once (cockney cowboys my ar*e). Nice guy although for some reason he was trying to persuade my girls not to move up from the Brownies - I think his kid had just been thrown out. They didn't listen - when the kids are united, they will never be deguided.

  • I'm not sure it is the worst game but the defeat to Hereford at home in the FA Cup in 2011 stands out as being awful - pitch destroyed by rugby, low crowd considering the importance of the game, Manset and Fleetwood causing Bennett and Westwood all sorts of problems.

Yep. Referenced that a page or so back.
The most low key disappointing third round FA Cup game you could imagine.

  • It's testament to how good a time of it we've had lately that I can't think of many recent ones, but there was a really grim night at Bristol Rovers a few years back. Freezing December night on that horrible uncovered terrace, stuffed 3-0 by a Matty Taylor hat-trick. It was in that Hayes-Thompson period where we were blunt upfront I think. And topped off by some of our goons giving dogs abuse to Cowan-Hall and Easter who had the misfortune of being subs for Bristol Rovers that night. Definitely one to forget.

  • You could probably include any game that’s been titled as a ‘Community day’ in this thread.

Otherwise the home loss v Bristol Rovers the week before Torquay is the absolute worst.

Chesterfield away being tonked 4-0 in a must win rain sodden game is up there.

Stockport away in the play offs and arriving at half time.

7-0 at the home to Shrewsbury in the JPT.

That Hereford fa cup tie also stands out.

  • Being in the Vere after that Rovers game is as low as it got. People stood on their own just staring at the floor, people mumbling to themselves with 1000 yard stares, groups of Trust types with absolute panic in their eyes knowing they had to pick up the pieces.

Fast forward a week and the sticky floored 80s club in Torquay was packed with Dad dancing Chairboys!

The 2-0 loss to MK Dons last season sticks in my mind as probably the worst away performance I've watched. Even worse than the 4-0 Sunderland game a few weeks before. Anyone who was there might testify something similar. I can't remember us creating a chance or having a shot all game. Crazy that we were promoted a few months later

That Sunderland game really was dire!

  • I'd say the Sunderland game was far worse than MK. After only one point in five games, it was beginning to feel that the season was falling apart. Little did we know what would be happening a couple of months down the line.

Worst ever walk out of a ground that one.
The shock of losing, featuring an appalling mistake from Ingram too (I think?), fused with their goons storming the pitch in celebrations at their certain survival (oh how sweet was it the week after)

But before that, trying to find a positive in talk of trips to some appalling outfits in the conference.

The Ingram mistake was the week before at home to Northampton when he dropped that cross in.

    Ah good correction.
Funny the bits we remember and disremember!

I'd forgotten Fleetwood were 2 divisions below us when we lost so abjectly to them.
But the other chap had forgotten they were down to 10 before 45, which I remembered vividly, as well as finding the game online for some strange reason - not being televised anywhere!

  • The Fleetwood cup tie was before my time, but I do remember the game against them in the season when we nearly dropped out of the league - or rather the game that didn't take place, because we forgot to turn on the under soil heating the night before the game, and the pitch was frozen. It felt very tinpot,

I think I've erased a lot of them from my memory, just by virtue of them being bad. One I do remember though is the 6-3 defeat at Posh after being 3-1 up, a brace from Mahoney-Johnson, Alan Smith's last game.
I'd been trying to convince myself that we should stick with Smith a bit longer, but that game was the last straw I think, for most fans, and obviously for the club.

    Nothing wrong with that game
Players 'downed tools' at HT in expectation (I believe) of getting Smith the sack if they lost and it worked.
All the fans saw what was going on and personally I supported our 'crapness' that day. I left that game with a big smile on my face as it looked like that was the end of Smith

  • @Guppys_Left_Leg Wasn't a good look by any standards though.

  • 6-0 away at Stockport made all the worse by the fact that I have lived & worked in Stockport since 1991 Match day was bad but Monday morning in work ...

  • @PJS, if I recall that game we played against driving rain first half and then at HT the wind changed direction and we played into the rain second half too!

  • @Twizz I thought that was the 4-1 thumping under O'Neill - they had a 6 ft 7 guy up front and we couldn't handle him... But then again, maybe that's a feature of Stockport weather!

  • Kevin Francis

  • @Leedsblue could be, I've tried to blot as much of the experience as I can - can't believe that was 27 years ago! Stockport has such happy memories as a Wanders fans.

  • Stockport does at least have lots at Robinsons pubs to drown your sorrows in

  • I can think of at least one Robinson who'll be drowning his sorrows in the North West tonight.

  • Are you referring, @MindlessDrugHoover, to the gaffer of a football club not far from here who are known in some quarters as the comeback kings ?

  • Heaven forfend that my irony comes back to bite me but I’d be very happy if it turned out to be a case of true words spoken in jest, provided they then suffered defeat in the Final. Preferably in a penalty shootout, of course.

  • Mention for the 1-1 draw with Franchise where we couldn't break down 9 men at AP for over half an hour, John Sutton missing a penalty

  • Pretty much every game I have ever attempted to bring a new enthusiast to Wycombe turned out to be the most turgid dross imaginable, probably doing my guests a massive favour in sending them packing at the first hurdle.

My memory seems to have blotted out the specifics, but I recall one such match someone composed a haiku along the lines of "aimlessly the ball flies through the air, let's all go to the pub". I may be conflating events, it was a very long time ago.

  • Someone reminded me over the weekend about midweek Cambridge away game I'd dragged them to, in 2016 maybe?

    It was absolutely abysmal

  • In fact that entire end of season, after the Villa Park replay, was dreadful

Amazing the difference 5 years make

  • Bristol Rovers at home the weekend before the miracle of Torquay. Heroic cup departures aside, the only time I've witnessed a defeat bring people to actual tears. Our club was going under and the pain was indescribable.

  • I wish I could remember the game I was at that was so boring we came up with a fake starting XI, including a back story for all of the players.

                                               Todd Chadwick (GK)

Clifford Malone (RB) Danny Shoulders (CB) Henri Assét (CB) Anton Pallets (LB)

Davey Stewart (RW) Enrich Font (CM) Graeme Pamphlet (MC) Isiah Josiah-Issacs (LW)

Dirk Maastricht (CF) Tony Pornfinger (CF)
