I’m miffed. Set the alarm last night to get me up in time to listen to GA on Talksport.
Tuned in 8.40 and popped bread in toaster. I’d read somewhere yesterday (I thought it was the Gasroom) that he was due to be interviewed at around 8.45 this morning. Now I know that this is confirmation of my “Traurigkeit” but I thought Gareth might have something interesting to say about all the current uncertainties on and off the pitch, albeit in guarded, anodyne terms.
Can someone please reassure me that I didn’t imagine that he was due to appear.
(I rang a couple of people last night to alert them.)
unfortunately Gareth’s value to the club means he is looking elsewhere.
He spoke to club chairmen during 2018 with Stroud’s blessing , the board have said between the power group “ it will be a shame to see him go but managers are many and we will find another option and the compensation price tag will see us clear financially for a little while longer “
If new owners come in they will actively sell Gareth to retrieve the compensation, they also believe we have found our level under his guidance and have their own manager along with CEO.
If new owners don’t come in we will be financially strained under Stroud and have no option but to encourage Gareth out at every chance as we did with Luke o’nien to get some quick cash.
Both options are ridiculous and should not happen but they will. We are enjoying the last few weeks of Gareth Ainsworth’s magnificent time at our club .
The board led by Trevor Stroud are fully accountable .
Gareth has been patient and accepting of our budget restrictions and the unprofessionalism of the front office management and commercial areas since Howard left , however the o’nien situation and later in 2018 the board publicly citing the lack of progression in cups as the reason why the clubs cashflow was critical was the final straw.
@micra I didn't get to listen to it unfortunately but the Wycombe Twitter gave these quotes from it...
“Portsmouth want to win promotion and I’m expecting one of our toughest tests this season. I know Kenny Jackett well and I’ve got huge respect for him.”
“It’s mayhem near the bottom. I’ve never been in a situation like it. We’ve got great fans, a great board, and we all know that survival would be a real success story. It’s in our hands.”
“I’ll dust off the boots and have a little run out in training today ahead of the @Sellebrity_UK game on Sunday! My kids know all about the Love Island and TOWIE guys and assure me they’ll be in good shape, but I’m looking forward to getting back on the pitch.”
“It’s for a great cause called Keep Moving Forward, run by @WW_SET. I’m hoping to see a big crowd there so please come down and show your support.”
@eric_plant - Whilst I would be sad to see Gareth go, it wouldn't be a disaster. He is not going to stay here for ever and hopefully we will get substantial compensation to keep us financially above water for a few months. The key will be getting the right replacement.
Additionally, I am sure he would look on us favourably in terms of loan players.
You have to think he needs his move sometime soon.
Scuffling for survival in league 1 for the forseeable otherwise won't be the stuff that attracts anyone.
Staying up this year though, would complete an excellent basket of work in his time here.
In some ways it'd be a massive blow if he went, but there's that growing other side, that maybe this style of football, and fairly cynical style is reaching the end of it's span.
Massively romantic to think someone will come in and "Gorman" it up, bearing in mind that unlike that period, we won't be one of the higher wad teams.
From the club perspective, I do think it would be a disaster if he left. I think he would be an extremely hard act to follow and I do suspect a decline in onfield performance would be very likely to follow.
I do though like Gareth as a man and am very grateful to him for the efforts he has put in and success he has brought. We can never prove it either way, but I do wonder if we would still be a league club now had Gareth not steered us through the last five years. So on a personal basis I would like to see Gareth get the opportunity he deserves at a higher level and do wonder if our financial constraints are holding him and his career back. It must be galling for him to see the likes of Darren Moore and Lee Bowyer apparently if betting is to be trusted ahead of him in the pecking order for an ex-club like QPR. Certainly if the investment proposal failed and a significant further cut in playing budget was required, it would be hard to blame Gareth for jumping ship to avoid the likely consequent damage to his c.v.
Finally thanks to marlow for his post above. very amusing.
As I was about to say before an iPhone malfunction brought yet another fine post to a premature end, the resurgent @marlowchair has dropped a bombshell.
He/she does not specify which chairmen GA is alleged to have spoken to at an unspecified point during a recent twelve month period but, if the discussion had Trevor Stroud’s blessing, then it could not have been the current incumbent. Or could it?
I love the idea of new owners “actively” selling GA and “retrieving” compensation.
Didn’t realise it had been lost. But perhaps the most interesting and revealing insight (albeit as in a glimpse of stocking being something shocking) is his/her contention that unspecified new owners (American surely) already have their own manager and CEO. Maybe this refers to a General Manager rather than GA’s replacement.
I dislike this kind of tittle tattle. There may be substance in some of what @marlowchair has to say but sloppy writing tends to undermine its credibility.
It is worth remembering odds are set according to how bookies think the money will come in, rather than purely what they think will happen. Gareth may just be on the board where he is because they know how many QPR fans will have a flutter at the name recognition.
@Shev - good point - of course Wycombe fans are not restricted (other than for commercial reasons) from having a bet and given @marlowchair 's track record I felt it was worth a punt at a working man's price.

I totally agree! My comment was not meant to be a criticism, sorry.
@eric_plant - I moved to Denver over a year ago, so my ear is not as much to the ground in Vegas any more, but I heard that Caesars have odds on the following:
FB fans to meltdown more than the Gasroom after Portsmouth loss: 1/3
Unused substitutes to be cited as the cure for Wycombe's problems: 2/3
JJ to be played as a number 9 owing to being joint top scorer: 4/1
Bayo to be put in goal: 5/1
Crisp complaints to cease: 8/1
Gasroom thread to be completed without puns: 10/1
GA to go to QPR: 14/1
QPR to show loyalty to a manager: 100/1

Chairmen of other clubs not ours.
Their own football manager not general manager. The club doesn’t need a GM and a CEO it just needs one who knows what they are doing.

It got moved onto Talk Sport 2
Well I’ll be damned. Have never tuned in to Talksport before and wasn’t aware that they had a second channel.
Where did I read about it yesterday @FmG ? And did GA say anything thought provoking?
Imagine a media world where The Independent ceases to exist in print, but Talksport have enough listeners to warrant a second station.
“Station”. Thanks @Jonny_King. I knew channel wasn’t right but couldn’t think what the equivalent was for those wireless programmes.
Yes, alarming isn’t it.
@micra , you sure are, but one of the best posters on here
(amongst a pretty appalling standard in fairness)

From the Talksport Twitter it suggests "Gareth Ainsworth refuses to rule out #QPR return".
A QPR fan of my acquaintance is convinced Ainsworth will be going there in the summer

Thanks @FmG. Interesting. But, for obvious reasons, not in the same category as the inside track insight provided by the resurgent
I am in two minds about Gareth and his future.
From the club perspective, I do think it would be a disaster if he left. I think he would be an extremely hard act to follow and I do suspect a decline in onfield performance would be very likely to follow.

@DevC can't disagree with much of that Devvo.
Gareth is an absolute class act and I hope he gets success and happiness wherever he is
The bookies spend about 2 minutes pricing these markets up

@Micra worth a Lady Godiva at 16/1 as a hedge though surely?

@Shev what are the big Vegas casino sportsbooks saying?

If I may add to the betting
Getting a warm burger from the terrace kiosk 250/1
Short queues at the terrace kiosk. 500/1
Seeing Dev at Adams Park in 2019 1000/1

Gawd help us if @marlowchair and @rmjlondon ever had a child...
@Wendoverman
marjlowchair maybe?
I predict Gareth will stay to the end of the season...
