  • Gareth may indeed go....but will it be to a club who wants a manager who knows how to operate successfully on a tight budget...or one that craves promotion, blows money and eats up managers? I'm not sure QPR want to be mid-table survivors in the Championship...so will they stake promotion to the Premier League on a League One manager...however popular with the fans? I'm not so sure...

@mooneyman didn't I read in the Wanderer interview that Dobbo does exactly that?

    Manage?

  • It's worth noting that Matt Bloomfield said he would love the chance to manage the club (or something to that effect) in the 'Bean With The Shot' special for his 500th appearance. That does not mean he would get the job, but it does show it has crossed his mind, and that rascally Suffolk might not keep him from it.

I am all for a 'boot room' process of promoting from within. One of Wycombe's greatest assets in punching above it's weight is the team unity and ethos. Every player at the club loves Bloomers, from what I understand from those interviews for the special, and the 'running through brick walls' cliche would certainly continue.

A caretaker for a week if we were in midseason and the manager was sacked maybe, but how could we expect a guy who does a little bit of coaching, to suddenly be tasked with bringing players in and doing a totally different job!?

By that reasoning, nobody could ever have been appointed manager of any football club.

I'd wager most managerial appointments come from those with a lot more experience than Bloomfield has.
I don't think he's got the steel for it. He's a bit Neil Smillie.
Ainsworth can do the nice dignified stuff, but he can be ruthless and he had a real nasty streak as a player too.

I am pretty sure the new manager is already in the building or has been in the last couple of years.

Why do people keep saying this? People kept saying it for Hayes, and now the same.
Who? Bloomfield? Based on some casual coaching, and being here years?!

From what we know of the way the board operates, I would say it's a racing certainly that they will look to promote from within if Gareth goes. Their reasoning will be thus:

:: The player knows the club so can operate effectively from day one, particularly when it comes to releasing and renewing contracts over the summer
:: The player understands the financial constraints we are under well so won't moan about not getting a transfer budget
:: The player will be able to 'continue Gareth's legacy' so will come with instant popularity, conferring that by osmosis to the board that picks him
:: The player will be inexperienced so will only ask for a tiny salary, knowing this is a remarkable opportunity to manage a League One club at the beginning of their career
:: The club will be able to save at least one and potentially two salaries by making the player into a player manager (I can also see us promoting a player coach from within)

For those reasons as soon as Gareth goes I fully expect the club to announce that Matt Bloomfield is the new player manager and Marcus Bean the new player coach.

You almost sounded legitimate until that last bit!!! DOL

  • @Wendoverman - QPR are paying for their days of mad spending and are having to make substantial savings to the playing budget. In light of this, I think Gareth is the ideal man.

See local paper briefly setting out their current financial state.

Marlow, if only you were a bit less of an absolute cloaky grudge merchant, then we could all get down the bookies with our tenners and clean up :)

You missed that boat when he was far larger odds weeks ago

So will this be announced pre Fleetwood then if it's a done deal?

  • Thanks for the tip @marlowchair (I've got £20 on at 16-1 thanks to you) but you must appreciate what you are saying is pure spin, unless you happen to have Gareth's ear. In terms of his career this is almost perfect timing for him to leave and to say that "enough is enough" for him is insulting to his integrity and hard work over the years.

My guess is that if the QPR job hadn't come up and at a time when he could leave with his head held high at a job well done he wouldn't have had "enough" and would still be with us next season.

I have of course taken you at your word that he is moving on (the QPR link is educated guesswork on my part), but then you have only ever told the truth on here so I am confident its a safe bet. (If not I'm sending the boys round...*)

*To avoid any element of doubt I wouldn't. That is a light-hearted remark

Just beyond any sort of understanding LOL.

    He'll go where Ainsworth goes!!

What do I need to understand to be able to say what I'd like to happen?

    Patronising prick

You're repeatedly a rude, ignorant poster, and it has to get called out occasionally. It's the internet pal.

  • Rude and ignorant to say I'd like Dobbo to be our next manager?

    Are you on drugs?

  • @marlowchair If you are involved with the club in any official capacity then may I politely remind you of the FA's anti-betting rules which state "you are not allowed to pass inside information on to someone else which they use for betting" and includes the employment of managers. The consequences of an investigation by the FA's Integrity Unit do not bear thinking about. Trust me on this one.

  • Who's had a bet then?

    I'll start - I had a fiver at 16/1

  • @eric_plant , i think the first half goes without saying from your recent reply alone. I'm sure there's many other examples we can dig out.

Our friend @marlowchair said "Anyone who thinks Dobbo is not a part of Gareth’s future plans really doesn’t understand the measure of the man and his respect and appreciation of Dobbo"
I think that words it quite well.

Eric is sure of what he thinks, and doesn't mind telling you what he thinks, but that doesn't make him rude or ignorant. Except maybe on the internet in 2019.

  • I dare say he is.

But it doesn't necessarily follow that Dobbo wouldn't prefer to have a go at being a manager.

And even if it's unlikely, it remains something that I'd like to see

Quite easy to follow for all but the stupidest

  • No chance of happening, but keep the dream alive in your heart!

  • Malone still thinks he's in the right. Bless.

  • That Dobbo becoming manager here won't happen? Unless you have @marlowchair type insider dealings, then yes 100%.

  • He didn't say Dobbo would become manager. You've misread something, had a hissy fit, and now can't back out. It's quite fun watching you argue with yourself though.

  • "just beyond any sort of understanding"

  • Hardly, and I don't think I need to back out of anything.

I think @aloysius suggestion of Bean becoming part of the backroom staff is more likely!

    travel from the coast...

  • is @marlowchair Joey Barton in disguise then?

  • Come on children, play nicely.

  • Probably a little too sharp on my behalf, so I'll offer a greasy hand of apology ;)

I blame the idea of Bean becoming player coach for sending me over the edge.
(although that might have been after, but that'll do as an excuse  )

I have full faith in Marlow’s insider knowledge (if not his use and interpretation of it), so I've got enough on at 16/1 to pay for my season ticket...

  • @Malone you're not thinking from a branding perspective. Who could resist a player manager and his deputy with the same initials? Matt and Marcus. Bloomfield and Bean.

    Energy = MB squared.
    Who needs a five-star hotel when you've got B&B?
Who needs a Ferrero Rocher when you've got an M&M?

  • I must say im not over keen on the idea of Bloomers becoming manager.... but i can imagine its the sort of thing the board would do
