The 3-3 draw at Brentford, when we all fell in love with big John Akinde, also saw the debut of Marek Stech. He signed on loan from West Ham I believe l, and only ended up playing 2 games. Scott Shearer was our number one at the time and the feeling when he got injured was that Young should have been given a chance.
Stech conceded within a few mins of his debut (fairly certain it was our old nemesis Jordan Rhodes with the goal too).
We have been blessed with some superb keepers over the years but these two never filled me with any confidence! Neither were terrible.... both were acceptable at the level we were at at the time. I think shearer was the best alrounder and safest bet, but they often juggled for the no. 1 spot.
Jamie Young had his moments of pure brilliance but Jesus christ he could occasionally be a total liability. I still have nightmares about him rushing well off his line and often well out of the box to do something either incredible... but more than likely something utterly stupid and or ridiculous. I kinda loved him for it though. Mad as a box of ferrets like all good keepers!!
Tjay completed the League and Cup double with Lincoln on Friday. 89th minute equaliser from Juanfri got them a 1-1 draw with St Joseph's to crush their opponents' title hopes and win the league by 2 points. So he'll have Champions League qualifiers to look forward to in July.
Young was a solid ‘keeper for us and I think most were surprised when he left having finally made the #1 shirt his. He’s still playing in his native Australia at 38.
Nathan Ashton is back in the docks, this time for alleged rape. I’m sure he hasn’t long been out of prison, I think he got sent down for armed robbery??
He got 15 years for armed robberies including some in the Wycombe area. Not sure he would fit the character test at Wycombe now, but a partnership with Gavin Grant would surely be a fantastic attacking option.
Tommy Mooney’s son Kelsey has signed for Accrington Stanley from promoted Boston United.
I saw him play in the National League North play-off final against Brackley. He was ok but his strike partner Jimmy Knowles was actually the one that caught the eye that day.
Alex Samuel scored a last minute consolation for Caley Thistle, as they lose 3-5 on aggregate to Hamilton Academical in the Championship Qualification Final. Disaster for Duncan Ferguson's ICT to drop down to the third tier.
JJ was on a Sky programme today suggesting he's not closed the door on continuing to play, but will give himself this month to take stock.
Would be very interesting watching where he might turn up. Whether he could still get a league 2 deal or thinking more the non league closer to home. And what position in, left back or centre back.
I was gifted today a print with 20 of Wycombe’s finest ever players portrayed on it in subbeteo style. Whilst many are before my time, I recognised all the names and know what they did for the club, with the exception of one Alf Britwell - I was wondering if anyone could tell me about Alf, as he doesn’t even have a Wikipedia (that I can find)?
Picking the greatest players is always going to cause a lot of discussion. These are "two dozen of the best" in the official history, which includes non-players:
Charley Harper
The Buchanans (Bill, Charlie. Albert, George)
Bernard "Bunny" Hooper
Frank Adams
Reg Boreham
Alf Britnell
Jock McCullam
Jock Sheppard
Sid Cann
Paul Bates
Len Worley
Tony Horseman
John Maskell
Brian Lee
John Delaney
Keith Searle
Larry Pritchard
Mark West
Dave Carroll
Steve Guppy
Martin O'Neill
That list was put together in 1996. Since then "key" figures could include Glyn Creaser, Keith Ryan, Keith Scott, Steve Thompson, Jason Cousins, Steve Brown, Paul McCarthy, Michael Simpson, Martin Taylor, Nathan Tyson, Matt Bloomfield, Gareth Ainsworth, Bayo, Joe Jacobson, Josh Scowen.
Ha, it definitely says Britnell - it's just very small writing and I wasn't wearing my glasses! I was surprised that Martin Taylor didn't make it, and I think you'd find it very tough to make a case for Vokes as one of our 20 best ever players, but it's a pretty good set and a lovely gift
I forgot Paul Hyde. I still think Noel Ashford is the "best" player I have seen, but he was only with us for a season, and three games at the start of the next. If we were to create a Hall of Fame at AP (any chance @bluntphil?), he probably wouldn't get into it. Instead it would probably be filled with people who have spent a long time at the club. They may be technically great players, or others who have been positively "influential" over a sustained time.

Yeah, I did a double take this morning despite seeing him fairly often around the area.

Scott Shearer Vs Jamie Young promised a bit more but in reality wasn't much of an upgrade on Parkin and Cheesewright
Fred starts for Luton, he’s had a good run towards the end of the season.
Were you front row at Pulp?
If only

Easy to forget Shearer got in the PFA team of the year.

Adams Park could restage the Gunfight at the OK Corall
The shoot on sight option.
Front 3 with Zebroski alongside them?
Actually, wasn’t he a left back? I’m sure we played him left wing as well but a LB by trade.

Jordan Archer released by QPR. Hasn’t played regular football for about five years. You know what happens next.

Forward foraging centre back, I reckon.
Was good to see Sergio Torres in the crowd at Wembley for the League Two playoff final.
Eze with a brace for Palace

Dave Finch's piece on Alf, from the official history. I would be interested in knowing who the other 19 are.
Alf Britnell, 1907-1984, scorer of the winning goal in the F.A. Amateur Cup final at Highbury in 1931.
Alf was a left-winger (outside left) who made 427 appearances and scored 74 goals between 1928 and 1945.
Brilliant thanks both!
the full 20, in order as they appear on the poster @Steve_Peart
Holfield, Vokes, Ainsworth, Steve Brown, Bloomfield, Britnell, Carroll, Worley, Maskell, Guppy, Bates, Akinfenwa, Michael Simpson, Jacobson, McCarthy, Betsy, Horseman, Ryan, Scott, Cousins.
Thanks @manchesterchairboy, I hope that print doesn't really say Britwell!
