Franco’s big strength is his distribution, something that Norris is also strong on. So if this signing is confirmed, you’d expect Norris to come in as No.1.
I think Franco’s weaknesses have been identified as a problem area. For all his good saves and strong distribution, there is a weakness at crosses and sometimes composure. Bringing in someone who has the same strengths and less of a weakness on crosses makes sense if you have identified an area of the team that is a weakness in the team.
I think Shala has been recalled to go out on loan at a club at a higher level than Potters Bar.
Other thought on why we would sign Norris: I assume Bishop has no loan recall option and by signing a decent keeper it would free up another loan in the matchday squad. Although not sure Norris would entertain sitting on the bench.
The Bishop situation is extremely baffling indeed.
Is Francos distribution good ? I think his kicking has been pretty poor recently. Look im not his biggest fan, I've made that pretty obvious, but even I have warmed to him slightly as there's no doubt he pulls off some fantastic saves, like he did yesterday, he has kept us in some games for sure. But for me he just looks so nervous and a bit weak still when crosses come into the area.
Totally agree with your last sentence. Franco for me has some significant limitations and I don’t think he’s good enough for the Championship. Norris would be a great signing.
He could if Sunderland agreed. They sent him here presumably to develop their player, he isn't going to develop as our number 3. I accept we will still be liable for his wages.
Let’s face it teams know our weakness. And sadly that’s crosses. Cambridge came at us from minute 1 overloading their right wing and bombarding us with crosses. The giants of centre halves saved us time after time but teams know.
Naturally everyone wants cover in every position but players need to play. Dodds coming from Sunderland can hopefully persuade them to take him back and send him out somewhere else if he doesn't favour him. Maybe he is a fan and he'll be in contention but seems unlikely if we are looking to add another keeper. Difficult to judge any player without a run of games.
Shamal was injured early in the Portsmouth FA Cup game which has complicated an already strange situation.
For whatever reason Bishop isn't the answer the club thought he'd be, Shala needs to be playing week in week out somewhere, and Rav needs some competition.
Dodds knows Nathan Bishop better than any other possible head coach. If he's not keen on him then that's interesting.
I imagine Bishop was another Matt Bloomfield choice, based not on data but on trying to right a wrong from when we tried to sign him last time. Maybe it's not surprising that the new regime would want someone else.
Doesn't explain Shamal George though. That's a signing I can't get my head round.
We did. But I'm more interested in why him, given this was well into the time that Dan Rice was okaying the signing of big names, like Morley and Fred. Even before his injury George didn't look like a first choice keeper. Could we have spent more money on a bigger name back in September, or was he the best we could get then? Was he a data pick or a Bloomfield / Mitchell pick? Or have we decided now that we've got more of a chance of promotion that we need someone better to prepare us for next season?
Comments
it does but I still think (hope) we will sign a replacement for Morley.
Rumoured with us early on, Villa's Sil Swinkels supposedly going to Bristol Rovers on loan
Random rumour. Will Norris from Portsmouth
Do we need a goalkeeper?
If Mike Dodds is coming in, you would suggest that would increase Nathan Bishop’s chances.
First reading of that I thought you'd left half the sentence out...Will Norris from Portsmouth do what?
Then realised. Long day.
Franco has been fantastic for us in the whole , deserves to be our number 1
why have we recalled Shala ? strange decision
Alan Nixon has reported this in today’s Sun.

makes no sense especially as we have recalled Shala back

On Norris, hearing things are quite advanced.

Rav to Shrewsbury? Not sure about their current keeper. No point Bishop staying and not even getting on bench.
The point is that Bishop may not be able to go back to Sunderland. Wycombe may already have decided he is not in their thinking.

I think he’s got 18 months left on his contract so clearly he wasn’t sent to us to see out his time. It hasn’t worked out for whatever reason
Everything is clear in retrospect but can’t help feeling that the mess-up of Bishop coming to us the first time around really stagnated his career.
He ended up sitting as 3rd choice at Man Utd and effectively wasted a season of his career.
If he had been able to have that season with us, he might have enhanced his stock further and found an attractive personal move.
The keeping situation already seems weird to me. Don't we have a keeper we paid money for sat on the bench?

Didn’t we sign George when Bishop was injured leaving us with one senior keeper?
