  • No worries, I also suspect we've spoken to other candidates, we'd be foolish not too, not that I know of any!

Hopefully Sam Grace and his team can pull out another victory tomorrow and we then have someone permanent in the role for Crawley away in a couple of weeks.

  • When a managed search goes on this long it’s pretty obvious we haven’t got our first choice. Maybe even our second choice. Which should make us even more thankful for Sam Grace and Sam Vokes.

  • Maybe they weren’t actually choices but simply disappointed during interview/s. None of us will know but I would much rather take our time and get the right person. There is no rush.

  • Someone mentioned Simon Grayson earlier and I have to say that's a great shout. Comes over really well and has had lots of experience and success. He earned promotion from this league automatically with Leeds and via the play offs with Blackpool, Huddersfield and Preston.

  • Yep I prefer "taking time to get the right appointment" over...

"Utterly panicking as the guy we just lashed 1.5m on players to satisfy can't even work here for 2months and didn't want to come either"

  • 2 downvotes from anonymous sunderland til I die netflix watchers I'm guessing

  • That would be a bit uninspiring for me, a bit old school and, I would imagine, the new set-up at most clubs would not suit some of the older guard.

Having said that, if we are going down the get promotion, sacked after ten games next season route...

  • Yeah, no thanks

  • The reality is that the signings are of the highest standard and the results are more than good enough. Rushing to get someone in that turns out to be Alan Smith is the worst case scenario. Win tomorrow and we can continue to find the best person for the next step. Clubs panic to appoint in a transfer window to allow the new guy to buy his players. We are not under that pressure of course. I do wonder if Bolton will want to generate cash to get some options in the door though.

The interim management team are buying the club the time they need to make the right decision.

I imagine we are caught in a bit of a dilemma right now in that the club will be looking for somebody that can not only finish the job of getting us promoted but also help us to hold our own in the Championship. The list of names banded around were not overly inspiring and none of them screamed out as people that could do a job beyond just getting us up (by the same token there is nothing to say MB could or would have done that either).

From a potential head coach perspective we are a horrible decision for somebody to make right now. Lots of investment and backing from the owners BUT we are 2nd in the table and the expectation having spent big on reinforcements is now promotion.... so anything other than that will be viewed as a failure.

I was not a fan of not having a head coach in place sooner rather than later, but if we win the next 2 or 3 games I'd start to think there really could be a temptation to keep the status quo and to not upset the apple cart. A new manager coming in at the end of the season with the ability to build a team for the Championship would attract a lot more interest.....

  • I didn't downvote, but we're all anonymous on here, except @Kim_il_Swan I think.

  • I meant more that people downvoted but didn't give a reason why they disagreed, unlike your self @Wendoverman which I appreciated. @flymofrank did reply but didn't give a reason.

  • @Wendoverman took the reason right out of my mouth

  • Mike Dodds now favourite on BetVictor. Another fairly random one?

  • I was going to quote meat loaf but then stopped when I realised the next line...

  • ex academy manager at Birmingham 38 , could be the type they are looking for .

  • Fairly dire record as interim manager at Sunderland last year, played 13, won 2, drawn 3, lost 8.

  • Good to see those leading the search utterly panicking taking their time to get it right.

  • It'd be interesting to hear what the flavour of thinking is.

Was a new manager already lined up - then pulled out.

Was a new manager in mind - but they didn't realise he didn't want to come.

Did we buy these expensive Danish fellas for a particular manager, before 1 of the 2 scenarios above

Or were they actually surprised Bloomy went when he did and they're scrabbling around for a plan?

Or is it all fine and we've got loads of options

  • But if he's young and 'progressive' then he'll be way better than a proven manager at this level right

  • The most viable rumour on here was that we'd approached the FA to speak to a member of their team. I can imagine that negotiation might take some time given they're likely to be in a stable, well-remunerated job and will see moving to WWFC as a risk, though one with potentially high reward if they take us up and then do better than expected next season. I can also see our leadership team being willing to wait a while for the right person, given a high profile appointment will really show the new regime in a positive light and even possibly garner international attention. That's why I've always thought Ashley Cole a realistic target. Young coach with huge profile and a strong track record of developing youth, someone capable of working in a modern management structure and someone highly regarded in the game.

  • I know they probably don't care very much about fan reaction, but they are in bit of a tricky position as they aren't looking for someone to come in, stop the rot and get us up the table, but someone who can come in with us in pole position and not bollox up a promotion. The Sams keeping us in the running adds to the dilemma...as they are not just a make weight option hanging on in there...so it could reflect badly on the management group (even with Lommy) if they unveil their choice and then we fall away.

I bet in a way this is a bit more challenging for DR than working for the big lads. Which he might enjoy!

(Given the Vokes interview I don't think we will struggle...but a new coach would need to harness the spirit we are presently showing at least until the summer.)

  • Completely agree but not sure the data will back it up. Imagine if we were as data driven all those years ago. We would never have signed the likes of Bayo and Charles - some really important players in our recent history. Even the likes of Ainsworth on loan may never have happened.

  • Presumably he coached Jobe Bellingham

  • Imagine what he could do with Kone! This could have legs in it but I'm sure he wouldn't come cheap.

  • Being data driven will help identify players who fit a certain profile or have potential, and it's possible that may well have ruled out some very good and successful players of the past, but it may also find some gems.

It's really only only one of a range of approaches and tests though, you wouldn't ignore a medical because the data says he is a good fit, there's no reason at all to ignore the background, character and personality checks.
