Thanks for all you've done for WWFC! I hope you join the WW ex-Players Association & come back to the annual dinner whenever possible. You'll be made very welcome!
I think the main reason they’ve done it now is to save 3 weeks of wages and allow him to train with his new club (Shrewsbury?). They won’t have paid him off for the rest of his contract.
With your background you'd probably know better than me but surely these "mutual" release scenarios very rarely end with no payoff. Maybe not the rest of the contract but surely some payoff.
i would have thought that his release now can give him home time with his family at Christmas, before he signs elsewhere? Whatever, his departure is tinged with sadness even though pretty predictable. What an amazing servant to our club he has been and he leaves us with all the best wishes for the future.
I guess he could coach one of Brighton’s age group teams and still play non-league nearby. It’s not unheard of. But I’m surprised he’s stepped away from playing full time.
You never know - Billy Kee quit the pro game relatively young for mental health reasons didn't he? I'm sure there was a top-level player fairly recently who did likewise.
Yes, he retired at 30 but went on to play in non league while working as a brick layer. Still plays for Quorn FC in the Northern Premier Midlands Division at Level 8 (Step4)

Things must be bad if ML needs to save three weeks of a player's wages. 😊
Quite possible but unlikely if Jason hasn’t found a team yet, which looks correct.
He still has 6 months left on his contract and probably well in excess of £50000.
If he is indeed without a club then I would hope we have paid him half, so 3 months. Gives him some security and us some savings.

@EwanHoosaami well said, an absolute credit to the club.
I believe he’s joining Brighton in some sort of coaching capacity
And retiring? Or combining with maybe playing non league?
Feels a real waste if he's retiring at 29?
But maybe the job is too good to turn down, like when Stuart Lewis did similar? Although I think he was a few years older at least.
Shame we couldn’t have given him a job with the academy.

Yes, at least if he was playing decent level non league it'd be something.
But to step from league 1 to nothing at 29 would be a real shame, unless he thinks this is a take it or leave one time opportunity.
But with Gareth making some positive noises, he'd surely be good for a couple of year spell at Shrewsbury which would buy a lot of time.
It's not exactly unheard of for a player to call time on their playing career that young without any injury problems
Not unheard of no, but fairly rare.
And normally when they get released at the end of a season. Not when they've seemingly purposely agreed an end to a deal midseason.

Has it actually been announced yet what he's doing ? I've seen nothing
He’s from the south coast isn’t he? Maybe he decided disrupting his family for a couple of years at Shrewsbury isn’t worth it.
Graham Taylor retired at 27 and became manager of Lincoln when he was 28.
Yeah he was at Southampton to begin with wasn't he ?
Peter Knowles retired for religious reasons.

We've all gone down this tangent on one poster's comment earlier.
That's crazy, and probably unheard of in those days?
Hasn't stopped the Rev!
