Coventry City interest in Matt Bloomfield

  • If he’s offered the Coventry job sadly I think he will go. It’s too big an opportunity to turn down. Massive potential there IF you get it right.

That being said I suspect they’ll want a bigger name anyway.

  • I had to respond that "saying it is embarrassing for a Wycombe manager to finish 9th or 10th in L1 is like saying it is embarrassing for Thomas Frank to finish 9th or 10th in the PL".

  • Sigh

See many of my posts during Ainsworth's reign.

Briefly, Bloomfield has been installed as a 5/6 favourite because an online article linked him to the job. It has nothing to do with the actual probability.

Linked with Coventry job and MoM award in the same week.

    Nice one Matt.

  • It seems completely nonsensical all-round for MB to leave Wycombe for Coventry at the present time.

    But to play devil’s advocate:

    • Coventry are allegedly interested in pursuing a head coach rather than a manager. MB fits the bill and they may see him as a cheaper option compared to other alternatives.
    • MB’s current stock is sky high. A progressive young manager, reached a cup final, turned a season around (admittedly of his own making) and has built a squad playing an attractive style more suited to the Championship than L1.
    • Who knows, maybe the current owners would say ‘thanks very much’ and let him go so that they can get their own person in?

I hope all of the above is wide of the mark.

  • Which is more likely? DrCongo next PM or Matt Bloomfield goes to Coventry?

    DrCongo 11/10

    Matt Bloomfield 10/11

Bit worrying Bloomfield odds on fav

To be honest...(and I do not mean any disrespect to our esteemed manager) but if Coventry took Blooms solely on the strength of a 10th placed League One finish, a lost Trophy final and the first dozen games of this season they would be mad.

  • Given that Cov gave just sacked their manager as a result of a slightly underwhelming start to the season after seven years of almost continual success, I wouldn't rule out that possibility...

  • Save our skin and get us into the champions league with it looking 5050 with 10 games to go?

  • I’m sorry anyone saying Bloomfield will consider leaving are deluded , he has achieved nothing yet , he has a great squad a fantastic training ground oh and a billionaire owner . 2-3 years down the road he would be likely to go for a far bigger club if he continues in this vain . The one thing he is not is stupid he has so much loyalty and love for the club he would not give that up for some lower championship side , Wycombe could be above them in 1-2 years .

  • I agree @OX66. I'd almost be disappointed in him if he did take it. He has a real chance to do something special here - this would be too soon imo.

  • Ready made replacement in Mark Robins if he does go!

  • All logical sense points to Bloomfield staying if offered Coventry.

The one thing that doesn’t is financial. Bloomfield has earned good money as a footballer but never the kind of money that makes his family stable for life. He’s probably on about £200k per annum at Wycombe. Coventry will probably offer £600k per annum on a three-year deal. Would be hard to turn that down.

  • Maybe they could just feck off, he's started something here and has much more to see and do.

They might be able to give him more cash but would that last 10 years if he gets sacked quickly and his reputation is trashed. They sacked an absolute legend while not even in the relegation spots, how many games does the lesser known replacement get?

Spot on. I don't think he will go, but I don't think it's deluded to see a tripled salary as tempting!

Either way, for me it's a little hard to imagine Coventry sacking a successful legacy manager like Robins unless they already have someone in mind or lined up, and I don't think that would be Blooms.

  • I personally think there are too many negatives to taking the Coventry job (trustworthiness of an owner who sacked a manager who worked miracles, starting from scratch with a completely new set of players, uprooting himself from Suffolk) compared to the positives of where he currently is with us (finally playing the football he's been trying to get us to play for 18 months, has a competitive squad with players he knows inside out with further potential to develop, potential for further targeted investment - all at the club he has an enormous affinity with). Quite simply there is too much unfinished business here, and he will surely back himself to get opportunities further down the line.

I don't think we can draw too many parallels with Ainsworth's departure, who had repaid the faith that placed in him countless times over and was starting to get to an age where he would need to make a move to further his career. And a club massively close to his heart came knocking.

Though I am biased and maybe dismissive of the attractions of Coventry City, though by the same token what Matty has built here so far this season is truly special. I'm sure he knows that too, and I hope his focus is firmly on completing his objectives with us first. Much like a certain Martin O'Neill who had his silly little dream telling him to try and get us into the Premier League before Nottingham Forest came knocking. Hopefully Blooms has had a few silly little dreams himself...

  • It is not just Blooms going but it will no doubt be all of his crew. They could end up in the same position as Dobbo. At least GA gets other media work

A large majority of you lot commenting on here are well educated and confident people that back themselves. Would you leave for a bigger company to double your salary for a challenging job, even if it had significant risk? I think many of you answer yes. I’d go to Coventry if I was Matt, especially with the uncertainty of the January window. Clever people cash in while their stock is high.

Edit - and I really hope he hasn’t been offered it. And I really hope I’m wrong.

He's staying and everything is going to be ok. Until Ipswich sack McKenna on Sunday and we can collectively shit the bed again.

  • Am sure it'd be like any job situation.

Get offered more elsewhere and suddenly your current employer can find a better offer. Maybe a higher bonus for promotion on top etc.

Would be the ultimate risk to leave now, just when things are looking brilliant.

For the record, to anyone who says Blooms will stay out of loyalty, I would not see it disloyal for him to leave. His first loyalty is to his wife and two daughters.

If he feels he has to "pay back" the loyalty shown to him, he needs to go to wherever Rob Couhig's next club is, because it is only RC who stuck by him (plus a vanishingly small handful of supporters).

We have no idea how loyal the new establishment is to MB, per other threads, especially given the recent sacking of his Ipswich recruitment pal. That could end up being a huge factor.

It would be galling for us as supporters to lose another manager after a five game winning streak, but Blooms would leave with my thanks should the money and opportunity be too tempting. After more than twenty years of service, he does not owe us a thing.

You're starting out your managerial career.

You've just seen a well respected manager who has done a great job get the sack for no real reason. They offer you the job.

The first person you call most likely to ask for advice is.... Ainsworth.

How did QPR go for you Gareth? Gareth: Well, my bank balance is good. Other than that I'm shafted with getting a half decent football job anywhere as QPR royally screwed me over as these clubs haven't got a clue about giving managers any time for any development...

  • Better get used to this, he’s going to be linked to every Championship job that comes up. Silly sacking season is just starting, so we’d better chill out as madness lies that way. FWIW I don’t think that he’ll be interested in the Cov job, and ML can match any wages offered.

  • Football is different, there are so few jobs that leaving one for something insecure is foolish. In my line of work there are probably thousands of similar jobs paying more elsewhere, MB has only 91 others in the league in this country, would not be considered for probably 30 of them and is above 47 or so already.

There is a sweet spot managers weigh up, am I on the rise, will other things come up , if I jump ship what are the prospects. A few weeks at somewhere trigger happy where the guy who bought all the players can't quite get it working isn't that attractive.

  • Lee Carsley being mentioned as a possible candidate. Apparently he played for them.

  • If I were MB, the only thing I’ll be doing with the Coventry rumours is use them in negotiations with Dan Rice/ML in getting my Contract at Wycombe extended/increased.

  • ML: Matt who? Anyway, tell me how the academy is going.
