Coventry City interest in Matt Bloomfield

  • I think Ipswich is the only club he would leave for at the moment.

  • Blooms would flourish in any club that gave him the respect he so richly deserves.

just because he’s been here a long time and has clearly done a brilliant job, the new owners might want to do things in a different way.

Matt was a Couhig appointment and Matt, thank heavens, hung in and has produced the most intricate, exciting and effective style of play in my time watching.

We are outperforming relative to budget by many places.

Blooms is a massive asset with an in depth knowledge of Men’s Lower League football and our glorious club.

Listen to his interview referencing familiar faces celebrating after last match and knowing first hand how difficult it is to play away at Stockport, done it before with Wycombe.

A precious commodity in the football club structure given that’s what we do.

There were at least two former Heads of State who wanted to bin Sir Gareth of Ainsworth…

  • I can't see Blooms leaving us for Coventry, not with how we're doing and the backing he's got here, plus all the history obviously. Now if it was Ipswich I'd be more worried

  • He'd probably leave for a major prem club to whop his salary up by 10 to 20 if we're honest.

    But yes, aside from that!

  • GA won a league record five games in a row and left for QPR.

Blooms just won a record-matching five league games in a row.

    (ducks)

I know it’s coming from an emotional place, I’ve been there myself, but those who can’t see any of the reasons why Matt Bloomfield wouldn’t take the Coventry City job probably have their eyes closed.

Btw, the title of this thread is sending me. @kipper you’re better than this.

  • Absolutely - plenty of reasons he would go. I'd argue there are more reasons for him to stay than there were for GA when he left though.

Odds on for the job now on Skybet. Could the Scott Mitchell sacking influence Blooms decision?

  • I just hope he would think to himself would he want to work for employers who sack Mark Robins after all he has done for Coventry in the last 7 years

    1) I saw the smile on his face on the pitch after the Stockport game.

    2) Next season we will be either playing in the league above them or setting to rest another long term jinx when we play them.

    3) Ask the question -"Why did they sack Mark Robins?"

    4) It is a shit drive from Suffolk to Coventry.

  • Does he have any assurance the current owners of Wycombe wouldn’t do the same thing?

  • You would guess this wouldn't strengthen our position in retaining him

Grigori Babayan (Astana's current manager) has an excellent win percentage, if we're going that way.

  • if I'd known a win on Tuesday could lead to this I'd have booed each goal

  • When Blooms left the last time it was with the express purpose of coming back and being Wycombe manager. We are his QPR. He’s not going anywhere.

Oh and I’m anally retentive so we make a fine pair.

The ‘cov’ I can just about bear but not to capitalise the ‘b’ for Bloomfield is like nails on a chalk board.

  • I’m clutching onto this too like there’s a barrel of sharks below my feet.

  • I think it is one thing to leave the edges of a playoff fight for a club you played for back in the day, like GA did for QPR. But to leave a club you played 558 times for and are leading the league and finally playing the way you want them to, to start all over again on a short leash in a relegation fight, is not as attractive.

I am realistic about it - if Coventry are paying enough, they have a great squad and Blooms would go directly into the Champo orbit and raise his profile, so I would not be astounded if he went. But deep down I feel as though it would say a lot about a lack of assurances from our new ownership if he did.

At least we would not be that embarrassing fanbase who say "no loyalty in football" when their manager leaves, seeing as most of us wanted his sacked less than a year ago.

  • Crazy to hear Blooms to Coventry and Ainsworth to Shrewsbury rumours in the same week. A lot changes in two years!

  • I'm sure there would be plenty of our fans who say 'wow we showed him loyalty last year when he was naff and then he jumps ship at the first offer? judas!!!!'. You know what the Facebook group can be like!

  • I'm not worried. Matt won't want to leave.

I can't imagine our owner would let him speak with Coventry anyway, unless of course he's already tapped up Sagnol.

  • Haha - spot on. Fans are loyal to the club itself, but never to managers. This Oxford sequence comes to mind:

    1. Fans call for Robinson's head even though he has been with the club years and got them battling for promotion to the second tier at times. Very loyal.
    2. Manning comes in after being sacked by a MK club he almost got into the second tier himself. Does well, leaves for Bristol as a club a division higher who will pay him more. He also knows first hand how much "fan loyalty" means after MK.
    3. Oxford fans throw their toys out of the pram, calling Manning a snake. "No loyalty in football!"
    4. Oxford fans promptly say they should go for Williams at Notts County, with comments like "why would he not want to go a division higher?" with no sense of irony at all.
    5. Oxford get Des Buckingham, he starts terribly, they all call for his head. Very loyal.
    6. Buckingham turns out to be great, gets them into the Champo and keeps them there, they all pat themselves on the back.
  • Absolutely not. Sorry. Lovely guy, superb motivator etc but we’ve undergone a magical transformation over the past ten months and Gazball is very old hat.

  • Having travelled from Suffolk for over 20 years, any option not involving him kipping at Marlow Road overnight might sound appealing.

  • He lived in Reading or surrounding area for at least 12 of those.

  • I genuinely think I might have to walk away the day we return to a "hoof it and hope" style of football.

  • Not a lot of people know that, I think.

I certainly didn’t. During his single days, presumably.

  • As far as Ainsworth, I think the bigger picture is that there is no way this analytics-based ownership would have him back. If Blooms leaves, we will get the Portuguese or Icelandic second division manager we have never heard of.

  • Hi @micra. I think MB mentioned in a few interviews that he and his family moved back to Suffolk after he made a promise to do so several years earlier, timing it with his children starting school. As always, this is based on my rather questionable memory.
