Is it just me or have the days gone where a left-footer goes on the left and a right-footer goes on the right? I get the cutting inside but I also miss the running to the bye line to cross in skill (Like Bowen for Kane's effort that was tipped onto the bar)
Bellingham can probably play any midfield role - I thought he only moved to the 10 fairly recently? Though he is brilliant there, I still think the 8 would be his best position, and that would unlock pretty much everything else without being a square peg in a round hole.
Keep him where he is, he is a world beater and we want him right up the pitch where he can hurt teams. Stick Wharton in alongside Rice and free Rice up to go and do what he does so well for Arsenal.
This might clear things up in the great Declan Rice debate! I know my ST holding best friend prefers him at the DM too.
“I think my best position is probably as a number 6. My biggest strength is breaking up the play and taking the ball from deep,” Rice told TNT Sports post-match."
best players were (in no order) Saka, Rice, Bellingham, Guehi & Walker
sadly neither TAA or Foden worked for me. The problem with Foden is he doesn't like playing on the left and makes that clear.
I would start Eze on the left, Saka right, Watkins at 9, Foden just behind him as a 10, with Bellingham & Rice in the midfield, the back 5 as per the Serbia game.
P.S. I am Scottish & dont play FM, so probably know nothing.
@Shev we have been here before. The discussion was about his best position, something that Eric feels more qualified to judge than anyone else to the extent that he makes absolute statements to the effect that Declan Rice is not a defensive midfielder. Declan Rice having played that position for his entire West Ham career, Declan Rice playing there for England, Declan Rice thinking it is his best position, all falls on the stony ground of it not being Eric’s opinion.
My thoughts are that he is at his best where he has been utilised for Arsenal this season. There is so much more to his game than being a defensive screen for the back four. Release him to hurt the opposition offensively
(also forget about playing Rice, Bellingham and Foden - that will get the best out of none of them)
In fact, it wasn’t even about his best position, it was about whether he ‘could’ play there for England, which he was characterised as being unsuitable for.
They really haven't, I was using short-hand "football-ese" to assert that I don't think he is best utilised as a defensive midfielder. It was a fairly common way of structuring such an opinion when discussing football.
But I'm happy to have clarified my thoughts for the two of you now. Hope it helps
I believe England still are bookies favourites. Debate on here suggests however no one is sure what the best 11 is however.
Five roughly equally matched teams plus perhaps three other credible contenders and loads of long shots (remember Greece!). Shaping up as a really good tournament.

The sheer joy of staying indoors and watching Romania-Ukraine on a sunny afternoon. Just saw Zelensky going around the stands with a bucket.
adding the question mark at the end of his name is a tad uncharitable but possibly fair.
Hear hear.
It is the age old question of do you try and squeeze in the best players, or do you go for the more effective team.
I dare say we'll quickly move on from thr Trent experiment and have Bellingham and Rice with Foden ahead of them.
That just means a debate on who to play left side.
What a superb Romanian strike!
But that’s the crux of the whole debate isn’t it? He can’t play both Foden and Bellingham in their natural positions at the same time.
Didn’t realise Bellingham had a position!
Surely down to direct versus tricky. Gordon versus Eze respectively.
There’s footy on t’telly?
Countdown can wait.

Ukraine are shit. Pass it on.

I agree heartily with every single word of this post. Spot on!
The discussion is not about which position he prefers to play
What is it about? His best position?

Those goalposts just moved.
Looks like @eric_plant has gone from "Declan Rice is not a defensive midfielder" to "Declan Rice is not just a defensive midfielder".

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
only if you don't understand the subtext of the original statement, which you clearly don't
doesn't matter though
This is hilarious. Do some more!
Beautiful work from Southgate. Cruise to an early lead. Gain 3 points. Reduce expectations and remove favourites tag. Giggle at one game wallies.
