Why a Tuesday night?! Why? Even though its the school holidays, that still puts off at least a third of the people wanting to go. Those that work late during the week, with children under the age of 7 and the older community who are uncomfortable being out later in the day. Play a team at a weekend to maximise the home attendance and boost the club's fan base before the season starts!
Perhaps Watford weren’t available at the weekend. And it’s a long time since I bothered with a pre-season friendly but I tend to associate them more with balmy summer nights than Saturday afternoons.
Timing’s never going to be perfect for all - and we’ve already got loads of dicking around to get used to this year, courtesy of Sky Sports.
What about people who might be at a fete or a country show on a weekend?
What about people who get sunburnt easily or people who don’t like being out in the heat of the day (like Jack Grimmer)?
What about people who are terrified of Wasps (both the insect and portly ‘athletes’ varieties)?
Just this. For everyone who would prefer friendlies on a Saturday there will be someone who would rather have them played on a Tuesday night. Do people stop and consider this before getting angry with the club because their own preferences haven’t been met?
No.
Watford are playing Brentford on the following Saturday.
The last Saturday pre-season friendly I went to was a murderously hot afternoon away to Oxford City.
I burned myself with a cup of tea after I noticed a jasper crawling up my shorts and took evasive action. There's no perfect way out of a hot drink / wasp attack combo.
Even Adams Park was opened with an evening friendly (Thursday night).
Did the wasp find what is was looking for!
The only pre-season games worth going to are away games at semi-local non-league grounds you've never or rarely been to before. Watching us play bigger clubs' kids and reserves is generally a pretty dispiriting experience.
Absolutely hit the nail on the head there, especially the last sentence. Friendlies are gash….
Fair play to the club, booking a higher division friendly but still leaving enough for the usuals to moan about
"Why's it midweek"
"Why is it so expensive"
"Why not someone more high profile"
etc etc
I tried really hard to find something to get unnecessarily angry about with this friendly but came up blank.
I enjoy a mid week pre season: missed being at the footie, the odd new signing to welcome, Trialist A B C etc “any idea? No me neither”, lengthening shadows, smell of new mown grass, floodlights as the sun sets. Bring it on….
Tremendous use of jasper there.
I might have turned up to this one with three generations of hornets in tow. But I’ll be in Northumberland. England’s finest county for holidays.
I hope that isn't why he didn't play much towards the end of the season
Yep and probably have higher police costs
We now have a Saturday friendly too, presumably just to give the other half of the gasroom something to whinge about.
Swindon away in a friendly. My biggest memory of the County Ground, and I have no idea when this was, is being as cold as I can ever remember at a football game.
That was a goal-less draw on Boxing Day 1995 under Alan Sm*th.
it was so, so cold
Yup that was it. Oh my days. Any game under Sm*th felt colder but that was something else.
Do we reckon we'll have more players named "Trialist" than actually signed players for either of these Friendly matches?
I remember that, too, for the penetrating cold. Makes me shiver now, just thinking about it. And nothing about the game to warm us up, either, as I recall.
That was a cold day!! Very similar to the Morecambe game last season.
I’m sure I’ve said on here before, but my legs were so cold that my thighs hurt with every step up the steps on the way out.
However, pretty certain Peter Thorne is still in Big Tel’s pocket even to this day.
Just checked up the lineups from that game, we had McGavin, Blissett, Garner and DeSouza in the matchday squad as strikers. Impressive.
But we also had a twat manager.
There was also a game at Swindon about ten years ago (probably longer therefore) played in a Force 8 gale.
I remember that game too. The wind was blowing end to end, rubbish game that we lost 1- 0 and to cap it off my missus and daughter were shopping at the outlet centre there and spent a small fortune! 😳
The AP friendly was a wash out too, absolutely hammered it down the second half to the point where the stewards were allowed to come in and sit under cover, think we won 5 or 6 nil though.
@drcongo you are right people will moan regardless but anyone who's ever been to Swindon will struggle for enthusiasm to go again.
I quite like The County Ground, old skool stands, v easy access / parking on street. And the joys of The Magic Roundabout right next door.
Arguably Steve Brown’s finest game for Wycombe that day.
