Out of interest, what do posters on social media benefit from by taking the p**s out of new signings or complaining they aren't someone else?
Seems to me that they are only doing it for their own self gratification, so I've absolutely no problem with Rob or @glasshalffull calling them out for it.
No it isn’t. White knight is turning up to defend someone who is perfectly able to defend themselves but they are doing it to curry favour with the person they are “protecting” but also to try and make themselves look relevant.
Typically it was used by guys trying to defend a women on the internet in hope they would swoon like the medieval damsel in distress. Hence the typical reply to someone whiteknighting is “she’s not going to sleep with you mate”.
My response to the original careless comment was in defence of the player, not the club. A young guy fresh out of college leaves his family and friends behind thousands of miles away, and moves into digs in an unfamiliar town in the hope of fulfilling his dream of becoming a professional footballer. He spends weeks training and hoping to impress before being offered a contract by Sam Grace, who has an exceptional talent for unearthing diamonds. Before he has even kicked a ball for the club some people who have never seen him play decide that he has only been taken on as a PR exercise. What evidence do they have for that assumption?
What a pathetic comment. If it’s me you are aiming these comments at, why would I try to curry favour with a player I don’t even know and he’s hardly able to defend himself on an internet forum he probably doesn’t know exists. My opinions are just as relevant as yours.
As we are on a Development Tea chat, I've just seen this tweet (or X or whatever its called now!)
So we have this guy training with us but he's not registered and the club haven't acknowledged him on any official channel but he's then using us to sell his ability to another club.
Have I missed something?
PS. I'm sorry if this has already been shared and discussed
You whiteknighting everything to do with the club. You get ultra defensive and go on the attack and demand evidence for other people’s opinions or speculative comments and then say “my opinion is as relevant as yours” like it’s some kind of get out.
Other people’s opinion is also as relevant to yours. To them this smacks of a PR deal.
To me it does too. But only a little bit I don’t think that’s the major driver behind it.
And you know what, so what if it is? As @drcongo said, PR isn’t a bad thing.
I have to say that the amount of times I see a player make it good and then find out they are from Chesham, Amersham, Aylesbury etc and wonder WTF are we doing. If this lad turns out to be the next Alexi Lalas and we missed him playing for Pete's son's team I would be raging.
And you’re completely missing the point. I don’t actuall mind you having your opinion. Half the time I find myself agree with you when on subject.
I mind you telling or finding a way to get other people to not have or give their opinion on things because YOU think they are wrong. And you do so defensively and aggressively to the same people over and over again.
At this point I don’t think you even realise you’re doing it anymore.
I am confused. It could be my age with all this social media jargon. If I post something in support of the club on the Gasroom (purely so they love me more than other people on the Gasroom) Is there any money or FA free tickets in it?
As an aside, and not really wishing to devalue anyone's opinion - and in my continued (and no-doubt interminably boring) view that these are basically pub conversations on here - as a rule of thumb i always try and think would I actually say (write) that about that player (or whoever) if they were actually in the 'bar' with us.
In real life (and away from the Vere Suite) it's pretty unlikely, but on here there is always that embarrassment factor of a tap on the shoulder and a: "what did you just say about me mate?"
I've no idea how likely it is that any players do actually trawl through the nonsense we (well most of us) spout on here, but it doesn't hurt to have that thought in the back of my mind.
For what it is worth, I rather agree with @glasshalffull in this respect. I think that attacking this young lad by suggesting his signing is for the wrong motives with no evidence to support that opinion is unfair to both the lad and the club and should be firmly challenged not least as they are unable to challenge it themselves.
To be clear I would have no issue whatsoever for someone saying their opinion is that the lad is not good enough as a player once they had seen him play (either for us or other clubs) although I am sure we all hope that will not be the case.
In an attempt to open a different dialogue under a thread about our development squad, I think it’s been an extraordinary success and Sam Grace has done an outstanding job. As well as the obvious successes like Mehmeti and Forino, we have also seen EFL appearances for the likes of Wakeley, Pattenden, Ward etc (I’m sure there are others, just can’t remember who) which represents a higher percentage of first team graduates than the majority of clubs have achieved.
I think we would have to know the costs of running the development squad in order to fairly judge whether or not it has been a success. On the face of it though it seems to have done well. I am sure lessons have been learned on how to make it even better going forward.

Whiteknighting is a new way of saying "my opinion is more valid than yours". Thought this was some kind of debating forum.

Back of the net. Easiest set up to an obvious come back ever.

If the boot fits…

Can I suggest that since you don’t like the content of my posts you simply block me? It would save us both a lot of time and angst.
No.

Even better, you get a free bag of crisps.
@TheDancingYak - do you mind if I ask you how old you are (within a band if you prefer).
I am just working on a generational theory which might well be complete bollocks but interesting to see if it fits in to this exchange.
Whatever you do don't answer.
What are we angry about now? I can't keep up.
It also doesn't mean it's untrue!
POTD

Then we will never know which is fine too.

Extraordinary thread this
Yes, and getting pretty boring and repetitive to onlookers I guess. Happy to move on.
Whiteknighting, of course! (I think...)

Bad news about Wakely recently

Unless your theory is "goons on the internet can be any age", I'd stop the studies right now.
To summarise:
A few goons blindly slated the new signing early on.
Big Al blindly backed the new signing early on.
And thus we have the sort of ultra negativity versus ultra positivity debate we pretty much see on here every single day.
I'm off to apply the word "goon" to the "Gasroom bingo" thread.
