Possibly a bit OTT from me and you @Lloyd2084, people can and do post what they like.
To follow up Rob going on about social media abuse affecting players with fans abusing a new player for not being someone else and then writing off and piss taking some kid isn't a great look cumulatively but is the way the game seems to be going.
Well you shouldn’t because you’ve made a judgment based on guesswork. Pete’s son plays for one of the best college teams in that part of the US and he recommended this lad. He has been training with us since the end of last season and if Sam Grace and Blooms think he’s good enough for the development squad that’s got nothing to do with a PR gesture.
Frankly if we weren't signing the best prospects in Louisiana i'd be more worried. He was supposed to be attending LSU this year, so he's obviously got something about him.
Because we’ve never signed a player for PR reasons before?
And I don’t even think that’s such a bad thing, you don’t always need to come across defensive.
Even if he’s well below par - and I have no reason to think he is - if we are seen stateside as an outlet for promising college football players to make it in the professional game, it would 100% worth a few turkeys. If Pete has to spend more time State side (understandably after the time during covid here) he could do a lot worse than take on a semi scouting role starting with teams local to him.
Who have we ever signed for PR reasons? Do you really think that a club where every penny is carefully spent can afford to sign players just because it looks good or suits some supposed agenda?
That question was already answered before you asked it. Keep up.
The competition put on by Samsung (iirc) to become a professional football player was 100% PR stunt. And there’s nothing wrong with that btw. Raises the profile of club, the player and didn’t cost us a penny. But we were still obliged to sign a player, any player at the culmination of the competition regardless of whether they were actually good enough for a league one (or two can’t remember) playing role. It was completely a PR signing.
I would actively encourage finding of inventive ways of opening player markets, or ways of attracting players be it PR driven, merit driven or whatever. If there’s a clear pathway to provide a decent ROI however way it can (assuming it’s all moral and legal etc) then I would be happy to do so. And that’s the one things the couhigs came in doing - do things differently, out of the norm, break the status quo.
They did it with Wanderers TV. They are trying to revolutionise the match day experience to increase revenue. Why not the odd PR stunt - again not saying this guy is - to attract/drive young foreign players to us as an option to go professional. We have finite scouting resources we need to find a way to get players coming to us. That’s surely part of what the worldwide Wycombe phenomenon thing was meant to do wasn’t it? Increase fan and club reputation to make us more attractive to fans and maybe players alike?
Might end up discovering the next Ansu Fati and stick a billion Euro release clause on him.

You're at least a decade off the usual age cynical behaviour becomes the default.
Leave that to us foul smelling middle aged bastads. Keep the optimism alive whole you're young son.
He goes straight in at number one for best hair in the squad
Bit of a coincidence that he plays for Pete’s son’s team…. Not sure why you’re getting pelters.
I reckon Sadlier might have a good shout in the hirsute stakes.
Wait until January when Pete's son joins the squad.
Vermin meltdown.
I didn't even clock that. I feel vindicated.

I saw Vermin Meltdown supporting Cannibal Corpse once.
Probably for the PR stunt bit rather than the idea that recommendations for players can come from all sorts of angles.
Mehmeti turning out for an outfit half the gasroom could get a game for being the best example.

I'm sure he'll be a step up from Nathan Evans.
Genuinely: who?
He won some sort of competition to be a professional footballer.

Ahh, rings a bell now

PR: Nathan Evans
Nepotism: Stuart Green
'where every penny is carefully spent'
How many firework displays during broad daylight have we had?
I was referring to the playing squad.
That is your interpretation to which you are perfectly entitled, but it doesn’t mean it is true.
I remember when Akinfenwe was an underwhelming PR signing to sell shirts and would most likely hardly ever figure on matchdays.
Didn't we get Nathan Evans wages paid or something?
Ah. International breaks. Two weeks without a game of football to dissect.
Plenty of room for trivial, rambling, relatively pointless debates and point-scoring.
Love it
(And good luck to the lad, whatever the pros and cons, etc)

I’d say less PR and more a contractual obligation as part of the Samsung shirt sponsorship.
It was a PR stunt which had (probably) a contractual obligation at the end of it to take someone on.
Either way I’d be VERY surprised if he had been offered a deal without it. It was a PR stunt for both the sponsor and us.
This is up there in the gasroom hall of stupid arguments. PR isn’t always a bad thing.
Indeed. That’s the TLDR.
also, people need to stop whiteknighting for the club at any perceived slight.
Still can't believe we signed that Bayo guy, surely just for clicks, FIFA strongest or something, whatever happened to him.
