Awful news that Gianluca Vialli passed away today after his battles against Cancer. One of the only player-managers who was actually successful in that role. I don't think I can name anyone else who did better
Really sad news. One of those big names you couldn't believe was playing over here, in a time the Italian league was still arguably the strongest league.
You pose an interesting question.
I had to look his record up, as memories fade, but Wiki has him taking it on Feb 98, and "Chelsea were already in the semi-finals of the League Cup and the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup" (before winning both).
He played 20 games, and then retired.
Can't name many player managers, but Dalglish has to be a strong contender in the last 30 years? Before my time, but played 120 or so times and won the double in his first season.
I know Hoddle had a spell as player manager at Chelsea didn't he.
Memory has them going 2-0 down to United in the FA cup final, and him on the bench clearly thinking "oohhh I best get myself on, that'll change the game", and then going 3-0 down instantly.
Vialli was a really nice guy from his TV work and what has been shared today, and a real legendary player , probably the best in Serie A and the champions league at the time, RIP
Was Zola also player manager at Watford, maybe he'd retired by then. Hoddle was great at Swindon and pretty good for a bit at Chelsea both as sweeper until he replaced himself in the team with Gullit who'd mostly played up front and also had his turn as manager. Hoddle was injured previously but would have probably still been one of the best players in the country when fit , certainly in the championship for Swindon. Arguably being that good a player pissed off his players in training as he'd shove them out of the way and show them how to do it.
Dalglish was more of a reluctant manager despite winning the league with two different clubs but again a great player.
Matty B signing some decent looking players at Col U who've been out of favour elsewhere. 3 players so far who've got some good experience in L2 but not played huge amounts this season at their current clubs. Very much looks like he's got the GA/Dobbo approach.
Be interesting to see where they end up this season.
Interesting! I feel as though Blooms will have them pulling away at some point to come 17th-18th, but in this instant gratification world you never know if that will be enough for a second season.
It seems like he's learnt a lot from Gareth. Some players don't perform at a club for a number of reasons but if he can give them a reason to play for him or Col U then that can only help him in the future.
You say that he was a good player/manager but when he tried it at QPR, it didn't end well. Even Gareth said that he found being a player/manager for QPR very difficult in an interview he's done. Could that have been a reason why he's never taken on the role / been interviewed? I guess we'll never know?
Your comments about Souness and Dalglish are both valid however they were both before my time. I only recall them both being normal managers at that point in their careers which is why I didn't think of them.
I also only recall Hoddle being Spurs and England manager before he headed off to Spain to set up an Academy?
The times at QPR in their ludicrous 5 year plan era were no decent measure, the owners and chief exec were loons, will have made him wary of jumping ship without a good base, as did seeing others like the Cowley's go to clubs and be sacked quickly and back down the league's.
Kept us in the league as player manager though (with a little help from our friends)
Dalglish is one of the most successful managers of all time. Winning the English title with two different teams as manager is an achievement that maybe only 3 or 4 managers have achieved in history.
Of course on the other side, taking over the super dominant force in the country, coming off vast success already, he had a great position to continue.
Blackburn was the original sugar daddy club too, so again hugely in his favour.
Doesn't take away the wins you rightly point out and although I'm sure everyone would debate it, does he rank above any of the below?
Shankley, Paisley, Fergie, Busby, Clough, Mourinho, Pep and no doubt a handful of others just in England alone?
Reading St Martin’s biography reminded me what an incredible record Clough had. Promotion and league title with Derby, the with Forest promotion to the first division, champions of Europe the year after, then consecutive European Cup wins. He had a phenomenal goal scoring record too (251 in 274 appearances) before his career was cut short through injury too.

Newcastle been watching the Wanderers?!
See David Gold, co-chairman of West Ham passed away this morning
Made his money from porn & Ann Summers shops

Souness at Rangers did well.
Erm.....Gareth Ainsworth?
Crap pitch, unimaginative free kick, flick on towards a striker with his back to goal and a defender for company, no probs, pick that out

John Toshack at Swansea?
Best of all time was Roy Race at Melchester Rovers of course

Jack Butland has signed for Manchester United. I hope they have the decency to let Nathan Bishop leave in this window.
Although given the goal United have just conceded maybe Bishop should stick around!

And to win the title as a player manager…wow!

I hate not being in the FA Cup
Yeah I know what you mean.
But apparently its not worth it anyone, not as important. Despite the memories it provides
Were we even in it to begin with?
Good to see plucky little Salford on Sky today, they so rarely get any coverage..
Our second team were!
Watford have put out an entire team of reserve and youth players today.
Watford have an awful lot of first team players injured at the moment, to be fair
Bournemouth, Burnley and Middlesborough have given away stupid goals overplaying out of the back. I couldn’t watch that every week.
I think starting with 3 17 year olds and having a 15 year old on the bench is making a mockery of the FA Cup though
