I really like Obita and the fact he isn’t a guaranteed starter is down to JJ still being a bloody good defender and the owner of the best left foot in the league.
Which in some ways makes it surprising to me that we were apparently interested in splashing the cash for another left sided defender back in January.
I'm not sure repeated selection in the Chuckletrade is an endorsement of how vital you are to the team. He finished the season playing on the left of the three behind Vokes didn't he? He did a decent job there too, I'm certainly not underestimating how important he is for us. However, I don't think he's first choice in that role, and I don't think he's first choice left back in a back 4. How is he so important to our shape (other than in a back 3/5 when he is clearly the best option on the left)?
I think the aim behind this was to allow Obita the opportunity to push on and play Left Wing as GA wanted a natural left-footer to provide early and accurate crosses in rather than having players check back onto their right foot before delivering a cross.
Could be another Vokes I suppose...just didn't work for him at Ipswich. I assume perennial favourites for promotion, Pompey are favourites for promotion again?
Obita and JJ have different skill sets, but Obita is the better left-back. But the system we're going to start the season with 🔮 accommodates them both to the benefit of the team
It’s all about opinions but Obita is not the better left back overall.
Obita is excellent when we have a fast winger to play against who wants to run at a left back, however, we play against them three or four times a season in league one.
JJ is better at pretty much everything else than Obita when it comes to heading, positioning, covering the rest of the back four and nipping in to take the ball off the attacker to break up play. Going forwards his crossing and dead balls are better.
Think yourself lucky no-one suggested it was a swollen prostate. As for the debate I'm really pleased we have both JJ and Obita and both will play their part in the success of the coming season.
I just think JJ's diminishing pace leaves him too vulnerable these days, and that can cancel out a lot of the attributes (that wanted to autocorrect to 'atrocities') you note - but I do think Gaz will accommodate both of them.
Oh, my days. You’re absolutely right @Wanderers82. And I speak as someone who has never knowingly derailed a thread. If you believe that……..,
But, to be fair, a post about a loan signing by Portsmouth and the follow-up posts are not exactly in keeping with the thread’s original intention/opportunity (I assume) for us to suggest realistic transfer targets. After seven weeks and 38 pages I’m not sure there’s been any kind of consensus about particular individuals, apart from Nathan Bishop.
Mercifully cooler tonight. 16 degrees Celsius.outside. 80 degrees Fahrenheit this afternoon a big improvement on 100 yesterday!
I had mine checked the other week, I won’t get into the details but I found it useful to mentally run through the side that got us promotion from the conference
Good to hear that you’re having it monitored. Assume you’re referring to a “digital” examination. The biopsy is like having a staple gun go off in… well, you know where. Mentally running through that Conference side would be inadequate distraction.
Sorry, @Wanderers82 for straying off topic again but an important issue for those of us of a certain age. And I disagree with @thecatwwfc. Your post made perfect sense.
Anyways, back onto the topic in hand. I reckon we are still waiting to hear about these signings:
1 - 2 Goalkeepers (One almost certainly Bishop) - I reckon we'll need another as well just a back-up in case Bishop was ever recalled which would leave us short
1 x Centre Back - As we do have part-timers & players who can be converted but it's always better to cover all bases
1 x Striker - While we have signed Mellor and have Ali & De Barr, I think another experienced head in that group of players might help at least one of them push on this season
Is there any other signings or suggestions that I have missed?
We've had one young GK training with us and another apparently impressive triallist, so one or even both of those could sign. I think we had four GKs on the books at the start of last season (was Anderson still here then?).

Obita is probably one of our key players in fairness, so you'd imagine he starts and plays 90 most weeks.
He was even playing in the Checkatrade last season when few first teamers were.
Had a slight run out of the team late on, which may have made people forget slightly how important he in to the shape.
JJ left CB in a four...Obita LB
JJ Left CB in a 3. Obita LWB
Or am I missing something?
Who's written him off?
Obviously Taf LCB in a 4
How they sort it out amongst themselves is up to them...

Never wrote him off. Just said he's had to adjust his style....
He certainly played very few games. Any idea what the surrounding circumstances were? Injuries, horses for courses, other ?

Didn't they buy 25 players and then sack the manager, something like that.
I'd probably say starting every game when not suffering or recovering from covid qualifies him as key player status.
That and watching him play.

That's a very sore testicle you have there @ReturnToSenda
I was gonna say there's something I never thought I'd read on the Gasroom...
Then I remembered it's the Gasroom.

I thought this chat was about new signings nor a debate on obita v JJ !

It's the first good point you've made.
Still makes little sense though. You realy need to do som werk on your grammer bro.

Sorry @Wanderers82 you need to get us back on track by posting about a player someone else has signed.
I thought it was about my severely swollen testicle
🎶 @ReturnToSenda has only got one ball..... 🎶
Sorry, I couldn't miss that opportunity!
