  • Without wishing to be a prophet of doom or anything but I’ve been told that won’t be signing Sam Lavelle.

  • In that case, welcome aboard Sam!

  • @ReturnToSenda I know you keep your nose to the ground

Even a stopped clock, etc, etc...

I think he can also play as part of a three up front. But Vokes is not going to start every game, Bayo is going to be an impact sub, and he is an experienced forward. Also don't believe the bad publicity @DevC this is a great squad if you get the chance to watch us!

Have read tweets from rover fans saying he is better wide.

  • Absolutely fascinating few days coming up. Will Samuel and Kashket leave? Will we sign a CB or maybe even a specialist RWB. We’ll know the story with Anthony Stewart by the time we kick off against Villa’s B team too.

And that’s all before we consider a category 4 hurricane hitting New Orleans between now and then. Hopefully the Couhigs and their families are safe.

  • @floyd Confirmed by Matt C that Stewart has a knock, but fingers crossed nonetheless!

  • @ReturnToSenda I’d missed that. That’s reassuring.

  • Oh for the day when we can line up as follows:

    Stockdale
    McCarthy
    Stewart
    Taffs
    JJ
    Obita
    Scowen
    Thompson
    McLeary
    Horgan
    Vokes

  • Yep, it needs to be remembered that we haven't once been able to field even Stewart, Taf and McCarthy together.

Macca is a big reason that we moved to this formation.

The Grimmer-CB-JJ back three isn't an issue - it worked wonderfully last season - it's what's in front of them (or not, as is currently the case on the right). I think we're just going to have to be patient while other players adapt to playing the wing-back role.

  • So let’s get another RWB in and maybe another CB.

Definitely another CB as one of our senior CBs is made of poppadom and the other doesn't have a great injury record either (and if the Lavelle rumours were true, it's an area we've been looking at strengthening). An out-and-out wing-back arguably doesn't exist - Obita is a rare exception, and a lot are wingers by trade - and we'd do well to have two out-and-out options in every single role anyway. I think Wheeler would be a great fit there, though.

  • The geordie Lasses are up front lad

  • Two days to the permanent transfer deadline. I seriously hope we can get a few defensive recruits through the door. Without reinforcements we could slip off the pace. It will be very interesting to see which way the club goes. 1) Stay as we are in the hope of getting people back and not slipping down the league. 2) Getting in new players to strengthen our challenge and cover what is now an injury hit squad and very short of defensive cover.
I hope it is the later.

Based on what we know ….
Because xxxxx is expected to be out for xxxxx I think we should / should not sign a new player on loan / permanent deal. Discuss.

  • Even if Stewart and McCarthy were to be available tomorrow I would still like us to sign a CB and RWB.

  • we have the best squad we have ever had however league 1 is the toughest it's ever been so we need to make sure our squad is geared to cope , we need a natural CB as it's not Grimmer and JJs natural position, if we get Lavelle in that would be perfect signing as gives us balance and genuinely think we will pose a title if not promotion push this season

  • I must admit when I saw Anthony Stewart out yesterday I assumed he was on the M1 heading to Luton. We do appear to be their feeder side. And as one of our most consistent performers since his career break and a stand out defender in league 1 I do wonder why he hasn't been snapped up.
A 3rd centre back would be good if we are committed to 5 at the back. But I do wonder why when we had the players for 4-4-2 yesterday did we try and shoe horn players into a 5 at the back, resulting in at least Grimmer and Kaikai having poor games?

  • I think it's great that Gaz is committed to the system. Ripping it up would have caused more problems. We're just a bit light at wing-back, which is hardly surprising given our ridiculous luck with injuries already this season.

  • I don't know the personalities of the players so I don't know how they can adapt but sometimes putting a player in an unfamiliar position and them having a poor game can be damaging.
I haven't seen Kaikai play much but at Stevenage at RWB he was not brilliant and his crossing was consistently poor. I just wonder if Grimmer played RB and Kaikai right midfield we may have had a more comfortable balance down that side.

  • A centre half seems like a priority if we continue to play 3 at the back. Not sure it’s Grimmer or JJ natural position. If we manage to move Samuel or Kashket on , who seem to have fallen out of favour, a right wing back would be a useful acquisition.

to my point exactly on my post

You expect any change in role to take time, but Kaikai does look particularly uncomfortable at RWB.

  • I'd have thought playing 3 at the back means it's less imperative for us to sign another centre half myself, but what do I know?

I agree that an alternative right wing back would be where we should be looking to strengthen

Who would have been the second centre back with Taf yesterday?

This is insanity. How can you leave Jack Grimmer out of our best XI?

  • There’s a fair argument for Grimmer being our best ever right back, but I don’t think he gets in the current first eleven if we’re playing wingbacks.

  • It would take wilful ignoring of what's happening on the pitch right now to say he's anywhere near his top form as well.

  • Madness. He’s been superb as a right-sided centre back. The system really suits him.

Dropping him for Tafazolli is madness. He can’t even get himself fit.
