Appalling. Whether whoever said it meant it as a racist slur or not, it is still crass and bloody offensive. As said above the overt equating of black players to animals was a shameful part of football and society for many years and no adult can plead ignorance to it.
It's for exactly this reason I've always been uncomfortable with people referring to Bayo as "Beast". He's obviously embraced it (and indeed turned it into a successful brand) and if he doesn't have a problem with it I guess neither should anyone else. But to me, it doesn't sit quite right.
SJW is short for Social Justice Warrior which is a term that is used to denote a person who is committed to the cause of social justice. Thus, an SJW may be seen seeking to uphold or promote what they perceive to be the interests of historically oppressed or under-represented social groups. It is increasingly used as a somewhat pejorative term to describe people so committed to their ideology that they make emotive or dogmatic judgements about situations which judgements might be thought to have the opposite effect to the one they claim to desire.
@HCblue excellent definition. I would only add that probably more common in the US than here so I apologise to @EwanHoosaami for using it without explanation
If he is offended by it and regards it as racist that should be enough. Someone white saying he should not be offended or questioning the offence not directed at them is pointless.
As Wendover says above, if Bayo found it to be a racially charged slur, then it was, end of story.
Whether the guy intended it to be so doesn't really matter apart from distinguishing whether he is just an overt racist, or a complete idiot for not thinking before saying something like that a few minutes after the teams took a knee against racism. Either way he should be outed.
Who uses water buffalo in that context? If he'd have said Whale it's a different story, that's a common phrase, but this crossed a line for Bayo so it should be unacceptable to everyone, if you don't agree with that, then I'm sorry but you're part of the problem.
I didn't see the Facebook infighting, but I can have a pretty good guess at who would have been claiming it wasn't racist...
I suggest you look at Bayos twitter account from February where he clearly suggests he is a strong and heavy water buffalo being taken down by a light and much faster lion, aka Curtis Thompson.

I suggest if you think that changes the situation, then you have a basic lack of understanding of how racism, or indeed the English language works.
Something /a word being used by yourself in a positive manner is entirely different to someone using it in a derogatory way to insult you.
@wwfcblue are you suggesting the fleetwood representative calling him a fat water buffalo was merely jokily referring to a previous post on bayos twitter account?
The guy may not have considered his words to be racially motivated, but if Bayo felt he was dehumanized, then there is an issue there that needs to be addressed. It's not a case of ostracising the Fleetwood official (assuming he didn't mean it in a racial context) more a case of educating as to why this could be considered offensive.
Thankfully the Facebook thread that was full of some incredibly I'll judged and ignorant comments has now been removed.

Shame I didn't see that, it's helpful when the xenophobes identify themselves willingly.
I personally think we're at the point where people should be ostracised. It's clear there's too many people who aren't willing to be educated or change their ways, so making it abundantly clear that if you say something racially charged you can lose your job / social standing is one of the only ways to stop those views being aired. It should be completely socially unacceptable
The impact of words on an individual is defined by who delivers them and in what context they are delivered. For instance, some people of colour use the ‘n’ word to refer to each other in a conversational manner, but if a white person uses that word in an aggressive manner that is a completely different issue. If Bayo took offence, that is his prerogative.
I never understand why people feel they have to twist and turn to try to find some innocent context for racist remarks other people have found offensive rather than just saying 'God that was a bit low...'
Fleetwood were having quite the weekend, add in the flare on the pitch, the two reds, the dissent. Strange way to celebrate your highest ever league position. Too easy to point to the manager setting out his team's DNA? Possibly but the club should be ashamed.
SJW is often used online interchangeably with snowflake to mean people who are always offended or trying to gain capital out of any perceived slur. Often also used to dismiss genuine concerns around racism, pollution or other factors playing the man rather than the ball.
There is no way Bayo has done this for publicity, whilst it's impossible to know full context without having been there but it's clearly unnaceptable regardless of the racial element in the environment it was said, and if it was meant as interpreted it's vile. Bayo hasn't named names but rightly calls for education and people to think about the impact of what they say rather than say what you like and glibly dismiss
It's such a important statement put out about from Bayo from his perspective. No one should have to put up with racial abuse anywhere. We have to understand what a problem this really is. I hope Bayo can silence this representative on Monday.

I’ve made no comment at all, just added some further context to the situation.
I really don’t like the personal attack on me in your post. Maybe you should think a bit more before you post your accusations.
Just for your info I sponsor one of our BAME players and was present at the BLM protest in Marlow on June 13th, as was Josh Parker.

This is like saying that a rapper using the N word changes things if they are then called the N word.
It changes nothing. It's all about context

If I have to be careful (you mean hold my tongue) "accusing" people of posting something clearly demonstrating a lack of understanding in black and white a couple of posts up, then what's the point?
I was careful, I considered my reply, and meant every word. What additional context did your post bring to the situation? Especially as it's already been mentioned in the thread and dismissed

Your post reminds me of when Suarez was found guilty of racism, and a number of Liverpool fans were scouring the net trying to find a way to spin it to being some sort of affectionate greeting.
Are you genuinely suggesting some random Fleetwood guy thought, ahhh months ago Bayo described himself as a water buffalo, so i'll abuse him for being one?

The world has gone completely mad
God bless you Bayo. You are a hero.
@OakwoodExile What's an SJW? Apologies for asking but I genuinely don't know.

I think it's an extraordinarily dignified and thoughtful response to a self-evidently racist slur.
Comment from the Oxford forum
"That's shocking. I hear the water buffalo has made a formal complaint."
Apparently all their decent fans are getting let in on Monday, 10 tickets should cover it.
