  • Out of interest was the "chaka khan" deliberate or the delights of predictive text?

personally not sure the opposition would influence whether I went or not.

I would probably go to the final, Wembley visits are rare things and we haven't actually won a competition that I can recall for a quarter century. If in the area I would probably go to a home semi and possibly quarter final. I wouldn't have bothered with previous rounds. Indeed this year not sure I would have bothered with earlier rounds even in my area.

I am not saying the WWFC crowd would be high (I would guess 8k - 10k as long as pricing wasn't extortionate) but I think there would be many more who simply couldn't be bothered than active boycotters (although some of the former may pretend to be the latter).

For WWFC the cup has served a useful purpose, made a significant amount of cash and used it to give opportunities to players not currently in the first team (Kashket being the most spectacular example).

Personally I would keep this one, possibly remodelled, over the pointless League Cup.

  • Whilst the competition format is not what most fans want to see, as fans we all want Wycombe to go as far in it as they can, particularly as they are making a lot of money from it that can only help their financial situation. How many would go to Wembley if we got there? Well wouldn't that be a delicious dilemma to have?

The B teams thing isn't dead yet by any means, lim sure Pep Guardiola said at the weekend he cannot see why there shouldn't be a Man City second team playing in the EFL - although he did mention playing against Newcastle so guess he's looking at them being in the Championship.

  • Take as much money from it as possible that's fine. I know a lot of season ticket holders who wouldn't go to the final. 5k absolute maximum I would say

  • It may be that this tournament was terminally fiddled about with to its detriment and may not appear in its present form next season. From our point of view...this time around it's welcome money despite very small attendances and a chance of Wembley and a cup...and a bit more money. A lot of people would go to Wembley if we get to the final whatever their qualms.

  • we should be offered a season ticket for Wembley this season:
    Checkatrade Trophy Final
    League 2 Play off Final
    FA Cup semi final
    FA Cup Final

and then the Charity Shield game as well in August.

  • But only one each...until the fourth window opens.
Oh am I in the wrong thread?

  • No, you can have two tickets. Just not next to each other.

  • Damn. I'm away for the charity shield game. Hardly make buying the ST worthwhile

  • Surely we would have to play our Europa League games at Wembley?

  • what are people's suggestions for a better way to gain the money we've received from this cup out of interest?

  • For the competition to remove B teams and keep regionalisation....

And therefore lose all of the money out of it?

  • Does anyone actually know how much the PL put into it?

  • The club used to lose money when hosting JPT matches...

  • I personally wouldn't go to a final in the competitions current format, for all the reasons expressed previously and I hope those people who would said that at the start of the season, stick to that view point. I imagine some people's heads may be turned though.

I'm surprised and disappointed by the criticism of the boycott, especially by some of our own supporters and even more so by our chairman. I would suggest that if you can't understand why principally it's wrong you may need to look at it again.

People are to quick IMHO to use money as a reason for playing football matches against B teams, on different days to Saturday afternoons and kick off times.

The B teams placement into the football league is my personal biggest concern about the demise of lower league football if this came into place. If one thing this year's competition has shown, is that it will not be accepted by a large percentage of supporters, even if the competition previously was not that wel attended.

The game and it's governing bodies should always take the interests of the match paying supporters, officials and players first.

  • What kind of person would abandon their principles over a glorified friendly just beacuse it was palyed at Wembley?

  • Another point of view is that now all the B teams have been eliminated the crowds should return to show solidarity with the lower league teams.

Agree with that and also what about some respect for the manager and players who have fought so hard to get us to the semis - something we have not previously achieved in this competition. To refer to the final as a glorified friendly hardly does justice to their efforts.

On a separate point, and cross-referring to the 600 thread, isn't Andrew Howard showing loyalty to loyal fans by running the club on business lines and seeking every opportunity to increase revenue? As no doubt GA would tell you, we would not be in the happy situation we are in now had it not been for his input.

Actually I believe we reached the semi final (southern area final) in our first league season.

Otherwise seems to me to be individual supporter choice whether or not to go to a football match. For me would be nice to see the team win at Wembley again (and actually win a trophy - first time in almost a quarter century).

  • The competition is self evidently ridiculous, but if you've been to Mansfield and Blackpool in Tuesdays nights in the same month, I've got nothing but respect for you.

I'm pretty sure it was Waddock or Ainsworth who backed the stadium move, so I hold very little truth in what managers say about chairman. It's hardly going to be in their best interests to slag off their ideas.

It is disgraceful that a fan owned club in our position voted for these changes. It's not all about money as I stated earlier, it's about being a principled club who vote in the best interests of football.

Saying floyd is right in saying that if you did make both trips to Mansfield and Blackpool I have nothing but admiration for your support/addiction ha

If anyone is wondering how many completely anti this competition people will all of a sudden be all over it if we hit Wembley, we'll find out soon.

    My guess will be sh!Tloads.

Have seen a fair few "retweets" from well known fans (previously anti) already holding the new revisionist position

Supporters trust owned the club before GA appointment, so unlikely to have been him.

There is a counter view to your arguments Bacon. it would go along the lines of

    1) lower league clubs , particularly WWFC are in desperate need of finances
    2) opportunity arose to make potentially significant sums (if we win the final over £250k)
    3) only "cost" of this opportunity is playing one match against a premiership U21 team
    4) if fans don't want to go to that match, or others, that is their right
    5) No precedent has been set re future league membership.

Not sure I fully agree with argument at either extreme, but as normal, don't think its a black or white question. In retrospect, I would have probably have held my nose and voted for the experiment.

Would be interesting how many of those at Blackpool and Mansfield began their journey within a 50 mile radius of HW. And how many began within a 50 mile radius of Blackpool or Mansfield. never forget the influence of the HW exile diaspora on week night away gates.

  • @Malone well, let's see, all the B teams are out, and um, we've got a great heritage in this competition... I'll let @eric_plant tell you the rest!

  • At least three of us at Mansfield are based in the north.

  • You can only play the competitions and the teams put in front of you. I did not agree with the inclusion of Premier League teams, but I hoped they would falter as it seems they have...so we've got to a semi-final for which the team have been reasonable well paid (bribed) and which I think has helped our fringe players get a bit of game time. It's not the most terrible thing to happen to football...and I doubt it will be repeated, but being one game from Wembley and still having all our best players fit for Saturday is a great achievement I think.

  • Will we carry on playing the squad now we've made the semi final though?
    That's the big conundrum.

Especially regarding Bayo and Kashket, as without them it seems we have next to no threat

  • I'm prepared to put my head above the parapet and get shot at. I have so far been to zero games in this competition this season, not because I've been boycotting it but because I couldn't give a sh1t. Now we are one game from Wembley I am indeed interested. And yes I will certainly go to the final if we get there. I'd imagine that, for all the discussion of the B teams boycott, a lot of people are in the same camp as me.

The draw is tomorrow at 11.30. Games to be played in the week commencing 20th February -

  • Last night was the first game I have seen in this competition. The prize money is clearly very valuable for the club - £40k for Blackpool, £50k last night, and over £100k if we win the semi final. Many do not agree with the tournament format but trying to look at the bigger picture is has been very valuable game time for some players and offered big financial benefits. Will De Havilland and Max Muller were excellent last night

  • They started out very shaky but grew into the game. Neither looked as good as Pierre or Stewart but not many defenders do. Muller looked very calm on the ball, and his long range shot (spilled by Keen for the equaliser) was terrific.
