  • I respect your opinion @DevC , i was meant to add Sido in the post but got a little side tracked. We all have Wycombe in our hearts and we all want the best for our club. I wasn't at the Exeter game because i work Bi-weekly but from what i read in the press and heard on Three Counties Radio we were certainly lucky to go in at the break 0-0. If you read my earlier post you would see that i mentioned most of out victories before this run have been a little smash and grab. Hardly an enticing brand off football to watch. Just my opinion of course.

  • @fedup1980 I agree with most of what you say except I would like to point out one thing : Is it really a fact that the manager would know more about football that every fan ? most maybe and certainly me that's for sure but everyone ? that appears a bit black and white to me , I understand it was in response to DevC but in my opinion , to assume " the manager knows best " it a bit of a folly . Sometimes when you are making mistakes it needs to be pointed out by outside observers and the fans are certainly this . I believe Kieth Scott mentioned what a lot on here are saying the other day and he certainly has experience . I think to a lot of outside observers it seems fairly obvious what is up at the moment . Are they all wrong because they are not ex footballers or have not been in management for a couple of years like GA ? He himself admits he makes mistakes and I respect him for it . Sure no one on here would likely be able to run the team as well as he has but does that mean any observation or critisism of him has to be wrong ?

  • Fair enough. Out of interest Taking the leap that Hayes and Wood were not fit to start and assume for the sake of argument that Sellers is unavailable and that there was a good reason for putting Pierre on the bench, what team would you have picked?

  • In short last two games over 100 quid spent per head and we have lacked fight. Formation is the problem not our budget...below 3000 last nighy gates will continue to fall

  • Thompson may have spent his career as a winger...but at 34 I reckon he is more dangerous in the middle as the target man as he is strong and has a decent burst of pace..with him hanging about the touchline taking throw-ins and making tackles...we have no outlet for goals. We have good players but 433 is not working. I am no footballer, but surely changes are worth trying before the 70th minute if things are not working. I'm hoping we bounce back on Saturday, but I got a baaaaad feeling...

  • @bourne70 no of course what you say is correct, I just put that in there in case the usual suspects jumped on me with a 'Gareth Knows more than you' quote. We as fans can see what the issues are and we can only dream of having Gaz' job.

@DevC I probably would have gone for Ingram, JJ, Sido, Row McCarthy, Harriman, Bean, O'Nien, Sellers, Thompson and because of Hayes' injury reluctantly Holloway. I included Sellers because you asked me to name a team with a problem that doesn't exist. Sellers is fully fit and i would very much liked to have seen him given the chance in an attacking style of play against the bottom of the league club. If we can't use a game like Newport to challenge ourselves and make bold and daring decisions then when can we?

  • You are making a few assumptions there it think . What I do know is the current formation is not working and personally I would try 442 like a lot on here . Why are we not trying Sellers ? I believe he should start . my team would be Ingram as a few have observed on here with Hayes and Thomson up front , Sellers Onien Bean and Harriman in midfield with the defence of Pierre, Jacobson , Jombai and the new loanee in defence . Rowe covering for Pierre if he is not available , Mcginn covering the midfield ... we have had the personnel for 442 for a few games now and we have played better in this formation when we have belatedly changed to it . You think it is the "default setting " to disgruntled fans traditionally ? does that make it wrong? I respect you loyalty to the manager DevC but I do not regard it as disloyal to believe he is wrong and have an opinion when things clearly are not working

  • The reason I said exclude Sellers is because GA knows far more what he is capable of having seen him every day in training. The supporters as yet (at least those who didnt go to BRS for the LDV thingy) have seen very brief cameos. I am going to trust GA judgement of when to throw him in. So if you accept GA judgement that yesterday was not the right game yet to give Sellers his full league debut (playing out of position), who would you put in to play 442.

Does any football manager know more about football than the vast majority of football supports. Yes of course he does. If GA had never won a game, fair enough get on his back as soon as three games are lost. To immediately jump on his back after all the success of the last 18 months in incredibly difficult circumstances feels incredibly ungrateful and unfair to me. Just my opinion of course.

  • Have to agree. I know we have to 'respect' all the teams in the league...if we do not attack against struggling teams like Stevenage and Newport and claw some points...we are going to be in trouble against Pompey and Co. I've delayed me holiday for a day to get my fix before I go away...so I am hoping we can turn over Carlisle in style!

  • And you are indeed entitled to your opinion . Of course does it not kind of suggest that and bad performances in management by a manager are purely down to situations outside his control rather than is own mistakes/lack of experience ?

  • I personally don't accept GA's judgement on the Sellers issue, he looks hungry and energetic. Just what we need

  • I agree Fedup

  • Not the best typing in the world so forgive me if I have misunderstood your point. for the record GA is the ninth longest serving manager from the 92 "League clubs". Incredible isnt it. Actually I suspect that in many cases managment success and failure is often more down to luck and outside circumstances than anything else (eg injury just before opening day last season necessitating bringing in a young loanee CB - who turned out to be Alfie Mawson) but that is another story.

Of course managers make mistakes and sometimes get their teams wrong. they like us all are all human. What i dont accept is some of the vitriol expressed here to a manager who has achieved remarkable things in the last 18 months as soon as the going gets a little tough. I think he deserves more than that.

I was intending to write more but I think Fedup makes my point far better than me. Unless he went to Bristol, fedup has never seen Sellers play more than 15 minutes or so in a game. He has almost certainly never seen him train. He has no view on his fitness levels over a full match. He has no idea whether Sellers was fully fit for yesterdays game. Gareth Ainsworth does. But Fedup is not prepared to back the judgement of a football professional with all the information available, he believes he is better placed to judge based on a couple of 15 minuite cameos. I rest my case.

  • Dev...I haven't seen much in the way of vitriol against GA on this thread, unless I've missed some unpleasant posts. I realise that we over-achieved last season, and I think GAz has been excellent for us...but I also think we have players that are not reaching their potential and, like most people, get a little perplexed and frustrated with the formation we play (as do some of the players it seems to me!), the lack of a Plan B when it is failing, resistance to make substitutions until it seems too late and bringing in young players and not playing them. That is all. I'm hoping that this is a blip, but surely you can understand some of the complaints considering four defeats on the trot? We cannot make a judgement on Sellers, it is true, as we've only seen him play for a few seconds!

  • I don't think that concludes the case at all .They are just your guesses on the situation , it could just as easily be a case of the manager having a typically English football managers opinion of experience over youth . You do not know this is the case with Sellers and unless he gets a run in the side and in a 442 formation I do believe anyone including GA can say he will not be up to it . Just my opinion of course but i think it is worth a go . If you are by chance correct about fitness ect .. I would have liked to see a left winger bought in on loan instead on a defender where he already have cover from Rowe and then 442 given a chance . Of course you will point out there may not be one available (another thing out of his hands ) I personally down believe this . Yes we have a small squad but 433 ain't working and with the return of Hayes and Wood we certainly do have the players for 442 even if there is not a natural left winger on the left wing .

  • The players over the last 18 months have massively OVER achieved their potential. The fact that we have lost three games in a row is not the surprise here, the surprise is that it hasnt happened previously in the last 18 months.

The argument is not whether Ainsworth is right but whether he is better placed to be right re Sellers. You and FedUp do not accept his judgement presumably meaning you think you know better despite not seeing him play a full game or seeing him train. I think that is extraordinarily daft.

Wood will be fine on the left wing when fully fit - as he has consistently been before. He hasnt been fully fit all season. It is again an extraordinary statement to say that you dont believe there is not a left winger of sufficient standard avaialble to loan and who would want to come to play for Wycombe. What evidence due you have to support this? How do you know that GA hasnt been on the phone to all his contacts for weeks trying to find one? How do you know that GA hadnt lined up such a player but couldnt comlete the deal until cash was freed up with Banton's departure? But no you simply choose not to believe it with no evidence whatsoever. .

Once Hayes and Wood are fully fit, we have the personnel to play 442 if GA believes that is most likely to produce a result. Until then if GA doesnt believe Sellers is ready yet, we havent had the ideal personnel in any sort of form. Simples.

For me GA has earned the right to be trusted for a good while yet. While he is not immune to making mistakes, I trust him to see what the average fan sees and much much more. If he believes that in all the circumstances a positive result is more likely playing a certain way, I tend to trust him more than the average fan following the latest bandwagon.

  • I saw Sellers play a whole game at Basingstoke in the summer and granted League two is much different to the level Basingstoke play at but in the Stevenage game and in his other appearances from the bench, Sellers has shown the same aggressive attacking play. He is very good at finding space for himself and when presented with the ball, goes direct at goal which is very refreshing. Can he do it from the start in a full game, i believe he can and we have to at least try.

No one here is saying GA has lost the plot but what we are seeing is the distinct lack of a Plan B when the team really needs it during games. The changes he made against Stevenage were brilliant, unfortunately he made them far too late and i was surprised he didn't try a more attacking formation for the home game against the leagues lowest ranked team.

  • So because he looks hungry and energetic and put in a good shift against Basingstoke (currently bottom of the conference south with 0 wins) you can decide that he deserves a start, when GA and his coaching staff see him on a daily basis and have so far decided that for whatever reason he isn't ready yet?

Junior Morias used to look hungry and energetic, and I think he had a decent season in the conference south with Boreham Wood last year, so would you have him back at Wycombe? Not that for one minute am I comparing the two, as I do think Sellars looks to have great potential and I too was quite excited after seeing his performance at Basingstoke - I just don't see how you can suggest that you know better than the professional football manager that works with him every day?
I think @bourne70 suggested it might be due to some misguided desire to use experience over youth? Seriously??? How many players has GA given their league debuts too? He has shown that he is more than willing to give young players a chance should they deserve it. I guess that up to this point he has felt - for whatever reason - that Sellars hasn't been ready. Maybe his time will come this Saturday, maybe it won't. Either way, I'm sure GA isn't deliberately leaving him out of the starting eleven just for the hell of it.

  • I too saw Sellars at Basingstoke and he was outstanding, with so much obvious potential. Don't dismiss the opposition, I was there when they knocked us out of the FA Cup! His energy, enthusiam, strength and pace and obvious talent is something we have been missing on the left with Woody out. I just can't see why he didn't start against Newport. And Kretchzmar just doesn't do it for me...not strong enough for league 2 imho.
