Reading are rumoured to be interested in signing Maidenhead United left winger Reece Smith. The 22 year old came through the youth ranks at York Road, and has six goals/four assists in his 35 games this season. He is out of contract in the summer abd has a career total of 23 goals from 153 appearances with the Magpies. Reading are still under a transfer embargo.
While we’re anxiously waiting for the resumption of our L1 promotion race, and hot off the heels of Non-League Day, here’s a brief rundown of what’s happening locally as we approach the season’s climax.
⚽ NATIONAL LEAGUE (Step 1 in NL)
Maidenhead’s battle against the drop is likely to go down to the wire. The Magpies earned a creditable draw against Rochdale on Saturday but they’ve played one game more than AFC Fylde and two more than Boston United. Added to that, they have a vastly inferior goal difference compared to Dagenham, who sit two points above them in the safe zone. Comfort can be taken by the Daggers’ slide down the table, but both Fylde and Boston are teams with greater momentum (14 and 17 points respectively from their last 10 games).
⚽ NATIONAL LEAGUE SOUTH (Step 2)
Slough’s second-half of the season slump has seen the Rebels plummet to the bottom-half of the table. They’re 11 points clear of St. Albans in the final relegation spot and will likely have enough to see it out over the next six games. However, three wins in their last 17 league games since the turn of the year tells its own story. Chesham sit two points and a place above our erstwhile rivals and will be more than content with a season of consolidation. Four defeats in their last seven has possibly put paid to any top-half ambitions but bar heavy defeats to Dorking and Truro, the Generals have been tough to beat all season.
⚽ SOUTHERN PREMIER SOUTH (Step 3)
The Fat Lady has been warming up her vocal chords to signal Marlow’s relegation for a while now and the Blues are all but down and likely to finish rock bottom. With nearly 100 goals conceded they’ll no doubt be looking at how they can regroup next term. I’m sure they won’t miss the long trips to the West Country.
⚽ SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL (Step 4)
Real Bedford and Berkhamsted are streets ahead of the rest with their recent 0-0 bore draw doing neither side any favours at the top. But behind them sit a village side from Flackwell Heath. As well as getting to a B&B final, they have a real chance of securing another promotion. The Heathens had a tricky spell in February, losing three in a row, but have recovered well and sit eight points within the play-off spots.
Beaconsfield have put some form together, albeit too little and too late to threaten the likes of Thame United in the top five. Aylesbury United are stuck in mid-table mud with a slightly unusual record of winning 14 times, losing 17, and drawing just twice in their 33 games thus far.
⚽ Combined Counties Premier Division North (Step 5)
Egham Town have pulled away at the top of the pack and now lead Amersham Town by six points, with both sides only having three games left to play. Burnham are three points inside the play-offs, but only have a three point cushion over near-ish rivals, Holyport.
Risborough Rangers sit two points above the relegation zone, with a big week of games coming up against Wallingford & Crowmarsh (home) and the nearest side below them, Edgware & Kingsbury (away), before a trip to bottom dwellers, Wembley.
⚽ Combined Counties Division One (Step 6)
Not much to report in this league since the last update. Windsor & Eton have romped to promotion and are well on course to break the 100-point mark. Penn & Tylers Green will finish comfortably in the play-offs and fancy their chances, while Holmer Green have been much improved but not quite good enough to challenge the pacesetters. The Greens do have a cup semi-final to look forward to though and the chance to do the double over Penn this coming Saturday.
Chalfont St. Peter should be completely safe with another couple of wins.
Maidenheads Bank Holiday May 5th home game v Boston could be worth getting down to as it’s the last game of the season. Our season finishes on Saturday May 3rd.
I went Saturday against Rochdale and I always enjoy the visit, especially as it’s in the town centre and a 2 minute walk from the train station.
