Top player, top professional, top bloke. Not had a look in this season, but has been a big part of this club for many seasons.
26 appearances in our season in the Championship, most notably at right wing back after the (very successful) move to a back three during the run in and 39 appearances the following season as we reached the play-off final.
He’s got to be an attractive option for a club like Shrewsbury given he’s a model pro, is only 29 and can play right back, right wing back and centre-half and can fill in at left back and central midfield. Especially as GA knows him and obviously rates him.
Another hero from 2020 departs, just Grimmer, Wheeler and Fred (via Luton) remains. Although he hasn't seen much first-team action recently, Jason's been a fantastic player for us who visibly put his heart and soul into his football for us. Anyone who has played more than 200 times in the famous quarters will be held in high regard, Jason certainly is no exception.
The interview with Matt Cecil was bitter sweet, though Jason's still a young man who should have a good few years playing ahead of him. I'm sure he'll find a new club in January and show what he can do again.
That is a truly wonderful interview. Jason McCarthy always tried his best for our club and is a wonderful guy. He has to leave as he’s not getting opportunities but how dignified. You can only hope he will get all the success he deserves in life as well as football.
Very true! It will be interesting to see who else GA gets to join him from the old guard, if anyone. Wheeler would be fantastic for them, but I have a sneaking suspicion we would see him as too valuable unless he pushes for it.
Brilliant man. Had the pleasure of sitting with him at the sponsors dinner a few years ago. Was interested in us and we spent a long time debating our favourite goals of that season. His winner in front of the terrace against Oxford will live long in my memory. Best of luck Jason
Great point about the flexibility - it really gives GA options to sign someone with so many potential positions in play. Another reason he'd love to get his hands on Wheeler, I expect!
You'd imagine he has what we all assume to be Shrewsbury arranged to happen next few days. Otherwise he'd surely have just sat it out and waited until Jan to take a free transfer then.
Could mean he's available for 2 extra games for Shrewsbury which is valuable in their position.
Sadly not. He can’t play until January even if released. It just gives him a bit of extra time to get sorted. Albeit there has to be a fair chance he’s already agreed something and will be training with his new club.
Great servant to the club, contributed so much on and off the pitch and that final interview and squad photo sums both him up and how highly he was clearly thought of by everyone at the club.
I will always fondly remember his reaction to scoring the Fleetwood Town injury time winner in Feb 2022 in front of the terrace - it was the first time I’d seen us win live in well over two years, so extra special for me!
Hope he can get back to playing regular football and wish him all the best for the rest of the career.
I wonder if other clubs are interested in him. Walsall, if he drops to League Two, could pursue him; he was the player of the season when they were in League One, chasing playoffs.
It's always a wrench when a long-serving and popular player leaves us, but especially so with Jason, as he has for so long epitomised what is great about our club. As many others have said, his final interview shows what a classy guy he is.
There's a chance that the club paid up his contract till the end of the season when it released him so that either he manages to get an effective second salary signing for a new team in Jan or can afford to sign for lower wages. If the case that's a nice move by the club.

You will always be welcome at Adams Park Jase. Good luck for the future. 👍
Thank you Jason, the very best of luck to you and your family. 💙
What a classy parting interview. Hope he's a success wherever he goes.

Can’t see him being without a club for very long.
Top man. Best wishes to him wherever he goes. It would be lovely for him to whip in a cross for the winner that keeps the Shrews up.

There's always someone "ITK" about the most painfully obvious potential moves players can make.
That is a rather special interview, makes you proud to be part of this club.
Any prospective academy player or senior player needs to be shown this, it speaks volumes.
Thanks Jason.

All the best Jason! Some fantastic memories, a great servant to the club and an all round top bloke!
What a special guy. That interview choked me up. I hope Jason returns for a fifth time, in some capacity.
Tremendous interview. Great servant to our club. One decent human being. Every success for the future.

Can we sponsor his shirt next season?
great idea, I'd be up for that

All the best Jase, it's been a real pleasure 🩵💙
Would be nice if he's around on friday to be brought on to the pitch before the game so we could show our appreciation and affection for him
Absolutely top man, top interview, wish him all the best fro the future

I doubt they'd have done the full amount, but probably some sort of compromise.
... or the remainder of this season?
That could have affected the timing of the news release. It would certainly be a classy gesture.
Me too, 👍
