Here's an obscure one. What about Richard "Bomber" Harris against Notts County? The man could work magic when the ball was in his hands for a throw in (just ask Joe Kinnear) but looked like Bambi on ice with it at his feet. Then came the County game, where he scored two early goals and looked untouchable before getting injured and leaving the pitch after about half an hour.
Re; Kevin Betsy. He's one of my favourite players, that first spell he had with us in particular was joyous. You could probably argue that McCleary is the closest we've come since to having a player that could do what he could.
Another of his standout appearances was away at Mansfield, when he scored a hat trick. He was completely unplayable that day.
Talking of GMac, at Northampton a few weeks back, he did something I don't think I've ever seen done at League One level - it looked like a kind of faked back heel into his own standing leg so the ball ended up shooting off forwards and the defenders who were tracking him both fell for the fake and started moving in the wrong direction, leaving Uncle G to run after it unopposed. It was sublime. Ronaldinho level stuff.
Love that kind of obscure detailed observation (obscure to most of us, I suspect). Magic Gmac.
@BlueBoy - Kevin Betsy was equally magic. Probably because I’ve limited hindsight about him in my aged memory bank and Gmac is very much a current star, I would put them on a par. What I do recall is the way Betsy linked up with the disgraced right back (whose name genuinely escapes me), emulated very impressively these days by Jack Grimmer and Gmac.
I remember that, right horrible seeing the injury happen right in front of me. Nothing really severe but still horrible to see someone hurt just as they were coming into form.

Forsyth at Man City.
Ray Wilkins against Luton
Kone against Peterborough
Forsyth on Play Your Cards Right
You get a Brucie Bonus for that!
Sean Devine's second-half hat-trick against Reading in 1999, after Reading had subbed their goalie at half-time.
Harry Kone
Also a shout for his hat-trick against Bury later that same season, where he touched the ball three times and came away with three goals.
Luke Moore v Grimsby Town, January 2004.
Brian Parkin, for Bristol Rovers against Wycombe in November 1993.

Maybe combine that into 'Gmagic'? It seems to suit him!
Max in goal for his debut at Barnsley.
Max is at Barnsley?!
Sorry, I thought I was in the ex-player thread.
Josh Scowen vs Burton Albion, October 2024
I was superb that day!

I’d rephrase that the Betsy is the closest we’ve had to doing what gmac could
