The main justification in my view is that it gets rid of unnecessary extra fixtures when there's been a perfectly adequate method for settling drawn games for decades. I can see the emotional attachment many of you have to replays - I have an emotional attachment to certain elements of football from when I was a kid - but this is a logical move away from an outdated tradition.
"And without replays we would not have had one of the greatest nights football following Wycombe, nor everything which followed in that cup run."
How can you say this with any kind of certainty? You don't know how it would have panned out had the tie been settled in the original game.
And yes, we don't *know* that we'd have beaten Villa, but I think we probably would have. Again, it doesn't take a genius to work out that an underdog stands more chance of winning in fewer minutes vs a bigger team.
And , FWIW, it's arguably that without the possibility of a replay the higher level, Premier League team, will put out a stronger team so as not to be knocked out by a lower tier team since they won't have the fall back of getting the job done in the replay.
Sorry @flymofrank but this is just another erosion of the competition instigated by teams in the PL for their own benefit.
My favourite thing is the promise that ‘all rounds will now take place over the weekend,’ but quarter final ‘weekend,’ is anywhere from Wednesday to Monday!
Completely disagree that it being a replay didn’t contribute to it being a classic game.
We were 2-0 down at half time at the game at Adams Park. Still remember Alan Hutchinson’s attempt at a rallying cry at half time when we hadn’t been in the game at all first half and me thinking no chance of a comeback here!
Definitely believe that original comeback carried in to what then happened that night at Selhurst park.
It was quite simply my favourite ever Wycombe game and think it was such a memorising night because it was a reply,
This has been coming a while, but still personally gutted and think its bad news for smaller clubs.
Dreadful decision this. Some great memories of the smaller team earning a replay to either be played at the bigger teams stadium or in their own back yard (sometimes almost literally). Echo many of the comments on here regarding the greed of the bigger teams.
Until this moment I didn't realise you had to commentate on that. How on earth did you manage that without either bursting into tears or just screaming gibberish (two emotions I encountered at Selhurst Park)?
Ask Exeter fans if replays should be scrapped. Their replay at Old Trafford back in 2005 basically secured the club's financial future as well as providing one of the best nights out for their fans in their history.
There is very little chance we’d have won games in extra time against WBA, Wimbledon or Middlesborough as our players were out on their feet at the final whistle.
I’m too young to remember Middlesborough but the memories of the WBA and Wimbledon away games still bring me happiness to this day when I think of the experience
The sheer joy of hanging on for a replay then anticipating a huge following at a famous old ground was magical to this young supporter. All now gone because of yet more European games.
The FA Cup, is THE cup competition, bar none. Disgraceful decision, just to pamper the big boys with all the money and big enough squads anyway. They would rather go and play an exhibition match in the US or China for the money.
Agree with what others have said, would probably make more sense to just scrap the league Cup, not too sure people would be so bothered with that.
The weirdest thing about this (IMO) is that they're not even pretending that they've consulted with the EFL or the National League. They're just brazenly admitting that this a decision that has been made by the PL with a few more pound coins thrown towards the FA to sweeten the deal.
Whatever you think about replays, that is absolutely shocking and a reflection of the complete disdain that the PL and FA have for the wider pyramid. A statement from the EFL clarifying their position has to follow immediately.
If only we could create an excitement caused by a replayed FA Cup tie algorithm that could produce a wildly unreliable index, we might yet get Franky onboard with it.
I like stats, a lot - I get a lot of enjoyment out of them - others might not - fine - but why certain individuals use that as a basis to throw insults at me, I don't know.

Following on from this, when will the League Cup go too?

I did get wound up, shouldn't have done
But people really love replays and your tone is very dismissive. Bound to wind up a few.

I am not trying to start an argument and we all have our little idiosyncrasies, but you do tend to confuse facts with opinions occasionally.
My favourite thing is the promise that ‘all rounds will now take place over the weekend,’ but quarter final ‘weekend,’ is anywhere from Wednesday to Monday!
That's a fair argument, although I'd still expect them to take the opportunity to rotate.
Anyway, I'm tapping out of this one
Actually I can say that with 100% certainty. Without the replay we wouldn't have had the game at Selhurst Park. That's a fact.
The rest is opinion, and I don't agree with your argument as I have explained.
Time will tell how many more ties are won by the lower tier team in future years.
Completely disagree that it being a replay didn’t contribute to it being a classic game.

Good idea. When you're in a hole stop digging.
Expressing a counter-view constitutes digging a hole now? OK.

Or Hereford fans for that matter.

This is all emotional though, can't be quantified.
He won't understand
It will be abolished when we win it twice in a row.
Give it a rest you old prick
Agreed
If only we could create an excitement caused by a replayed FA Cup tie algorithm that could produce a wildly unreliable index, we might yet get Franky onboard with it.
To be fair you started it
Started what? Was I taking personal digs at anyone until plant piped up (and even then, I only called him obtuse - which is true)? No, I wasn't.
Mr Plant please!
