No, I didn’t think that he should be sacked at any stage of the season. He is an intelligent guy and I was confident that he would learn from the mistakes he had made which is exactly what happened.
I didn't either, but at the same time it felt to me that it was going to be very difficult for him if that first half had been replicated in the 2nd half.
It was genuinely one of the worst Wycombe performances I have ever seen
@micra you described Nigel's performance against Derby as "spectacular". That's good enough for me to offer you a seat on the bus. If you don't want to take it up, it's your prerogative 😉
To be honest, during that Fleetwood game, I was ready to pack it in. I'd stuck by Blooms through a difficult winter, but the lack of any energy or plan against a dreadful team seemed like it pointed to the end.
The turnaround has been incredible, and smart recruitment has massively helped. Longwijk has provided huge presence across the back, and Butcher quietly goes about his business bringing the best out of Josh and Potts.
There does need to be more of a plan going into the summer of what Blooms wants to do next season. He built around 3 at the back, then moved to a 4 with great success, which shows canny knowledge but also understandable inexperience through his first transfer window.
If we want to push higher next year, a knowledge of whether he wants to try and make us a slick team or more of a direct Ainsworth-lite side, needs to be figured out. The GK situation needs to be sorted as Max will probably go, and the entire attack needs a refresh imo.
Totally agree @NiceCarrots and one of those signings was Nigel Lonwijk who has been exceptional and not forgetting the very reliable Butcher who has balanced the midfield since his introduction.
I'd hope heaven and earth would be moved to keep Nigel for next season if at all possible. I realise it's highly unlikely we'll get to keep him, even on loan, but if he's unlikely to feature regularly, if at all, for Wolves and he likes it here and Wolves feel he'll develop well with us, who knows. Stranger things have happened.
I was certainly in the time has come camp, I have no regret about that. And it was heartbreaking to feel like that. But I felt he wasn't learning and I was exasperated that he was making the same mistakes over and over. And I was amazed that a person / player we had all known for so long was displaying an arrogance in his self-belief that it would come right. When it wasn't and it was obvious to everyone that it wasn't to fans and players.
What changed I don't know. The formation change was huge but not the only thing that saw us transformed. And thank goodness it did. No one wanted/wants Mr Wycombe to succeed more than me. Just one of life's good guys.
Another chance to gloat over Stevenage’s dramatic decline over the last ten matches. Was Evans’ departure cause or effect? “Mutual consent”, jump before you’re pushed or, unlikely, straight resignation?
Can’t get the form table up now but I think they were about 19th.
@flymofrank Please stop saying he'll be playing in the Championship next year, at least until it's happened!! It's going to be heartbreaking enough as it is, when he walks around the pitch after the Charlton match... For now, permit some of us to dream...😔
You’re absolutely right. I’d forgotten how good he was a mere fortnight ago. Not sure I’ve ever previously described an individual performance as spectacular. Can I sit “on top” of the bus, up front, manipulating a dinner plate like a steering wheel and making engine revving noises? I actually used to do that back in the ‘forties.

Fair enough.
Felt a bit like the Gary Waddock AFC Wimbledon game to me

A turning point that was hugely helped by Fleetwood having a player sent off in first half stoppage time. A massive stroke of fortune for Blooms.
I agree with @glasshalffull that the great U-turn to four at the back and some key January additions are what saved the season.
Promise Omochere got sent off didn't he? Was having an excellent game as well

he was running the show, and it was a really pointless 2nd yellow card as well

Two reasons to be cheerful;
1) The Couhigs kept the faith with Blooms which was the right decision
2) IMHO the finest transfer window in January since the club's inception

Would love to keep him, but he wouldn't even have come to us in the first place had he not been injured. He'll be in the Championship next season.
So they've had Westley and Evans. Cotterill next for Stevenage?
Barton?
Oops, wrong thread - but fair shout
I was hoping he'd get the Franchise job after they lose in the play offs and Williamson leaves to manage a proper club.
He'll be in the Championship in 25/26. As captain of Wycombe. You heard it here first.

I don’t see the need for an old-fashioned target man. Richard Cello Kone does his own thing. Brings others in as well.
I’d very much like to sign up to the Nigel Lonwijk fan club too. If only for his superb scissors kick against those biscuit-eating pricks.
In fact, I’d go as far as to say he’s my favourite ever Dutch footballer.
@Blue_since_1990 and @MindlessDrugHoover have hopped aboard the Nigel bus...!!

Plan B?
No, just the way football formations have developed. I think the Dutch called it total football. I could well be talking rubbish.
"those biscuit-eating pricks"
This is the content we come here for
@glasshalfempty As it must be hard for you to admire anything remotely Dutch, this is praise indeed...! Hop on that bus...!!
Total football was binned way before @flymofrank was even born.
Oh, that’s a shame.
Who else makes the top five of Dutch footballers ever?
