Just watched the first episode. Very promising start, the characters have certainly got a bit about them and it’s nailed the crumbling decay of the era.
Don’t think I’ve seen a better looking drama on BBC1 in a long time - every shot is framed to perfection.
Now there’s a thought. Band you were most excited to see that let you down.
For me, The White Stripes. Opened with some unidentifiable 10 minute dirge before Jack White started screeching on about a ghost in his house over some dreadful guitar cock rocking, while Meg aimlessly bashed at a Tupperware sounding drum kit.
It started to rain, so I called it a night.
Couldn’t listen to anything by them for about 5 years!
Earl's Court's not there anymore, is it? Worst-sounding venue I've been to is the Guildhall in Southampton - the floor is covered in carpet, ffs! Ally Pally not great either.
I have said previously on here that I was a fan of the Clash back in the day. Saw them 4 times live at various venues and every time I always felt disappointed.
I also left a Ramones gig early and underwhelmed but that was because they made the mistake of having a support band who blew them off the stage that night (The Rezillos).
Red Hot Chilli Peppers were never my favourite by a long chalk but utter garbage even by their standards at Reading. Faith No More, Nine Inch Nails, Iron Maiden - they were all fantastic live. Remember the Pixies being excellent too.
Van Morrison has a well earned reputation as one of the most unpleasant people in music. Only seen him live once, at a festival, and he played a couple of old Them songs so it was better than I expected but never been a fan.
Most disappointing band I ever saw was My Bloody Valentine back in the late 80s. Didn't manage to finish a single song all night, everything just fell apart. Don't know if they were drunk or stoned or what. Saw them other times and they were great.
I’d say Black Sabbath at Reading ‘83. I’d seen them with Dio on vocals Jan 2nd ‘82 and they were, once you got past Ozzy not being there, great. I’d seen the Ian Gillan Band in ‘81, also great. At Reading we got Sabbath with Gillan on vocals and it was ghastly. Like an Eaton Mess with the strawberries swapped with prawns. Unpalatable.
Marillion had played before them and they were fantastic. I’m pretty sure after Sabbath walked off the crowd called for Marillion to come back on.
By some distance I'd imagine. I've seen them a couple of times even though I'm really not a fan and their fanbase is both huge and completely fanatical. They're massive in Europe and run, or ran, their own festivals over there.
They are interesting in that they are almost two different bands with Fish as lead singer up to 1988 and then with Steve Hogarth from 1989 onwards.
I think the song you’d be most likely to recognise is ‘Lavender’. Best song possibly the title track from Script for a Jester’s Tear. Depends on how over-dramatic you like your music.

Yeah, but probably not as much as Barat... or Moss
Doherty’s appearance at Penn Festival a few years ago remains the worst live show I’ve ever seen.
And I’ve seen Texas and Limp Bizkit.
Can imagine he'd be awful if disinterested or distracted and that's probably fairly often but they are good live "on their day"
Has anyone here seen the Strokes 'on their day'? Most disappointing live band I've ever seen.
The Hives were better than The Strokes

Think they were bang average at Reading a few years ago as you mention it.
Chilli Peppers at Earls Court was probably the least delivering combo I've seen, they weren't very good and EC was just a barn with some curtains up.
Funny you should say that - Jack White solo is probably the best live act I've ever seen!

If DJs count, Juan Atkins in Austin about three weeks ago. One of the OGs of Detroit techno, couldn’t mix for shit.
System of a Down for me. Really not very good the night I saw them.
Much like the Stade de three sides sometimes a venue is only really fit for demolition.

Disappointing gigs - Belle and Sebastian at Chelsea Hospital…was like background music in a crowded pub garden.
Echo and the Bunnymen at the Roundhouse - Ian McCullough’s voice had gone.
Van Morrison at the Albert Hall - he acted like he didn't want to be there.
Ray Davies at Royal Festival Hall - his voice had gone too.
I've only ever heard bad things about Van Morrison gigs

My tired eyes thought you were about to talk about the disappointment of seeing Mr Blobby live - then I realised it was MBV 🤦♂️
Oh no, Blobby was every inch the star when I saw him. Played all the hits and... oh no, sorry, I meant Bowie.
I am indeed Mr Hoover. There’s always a place for Black Metal and its derivatives in my heart (apart from the nazi shit).
Did Blobby ever tour?
Going to second and third the shouts for Chilli Peppers. Their Reading set was so poor we left halfway through
Saw Van at Nostell Priory in ‘84. Meh.

Apparently Marillion are the biggest-selling artist from Bucks

I'm sure I'd know a song or two if I heard them, but I couldn't name you one

I'd say "Kayleigh" is probably more well-known. 😉
Yeah, I just brought them up on Spotify and I semi-recognised that one. Not really my thing but can see why they're popular.
