Wycombe Wanderers: among the least searched-for football shirts
Disappointing news in my inbox...
A new study has revealed the least in-demand football shirts in the UK, with the Hull City kit taking the top spot.
While Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal dominate the popularity charts, teams like Hull City struggle to garner attention for their shirts.
The research, conducted by football shirt retailer UKSoccerShop, used Google Keyword Planner to analyse nationwide searches for the shirts of teams within the Premier and Championship League over the last five years - identifying the football clubs with the least enthusiastic fans.
Hull City ranks the least popular, with only 2,120 searches for their team shirt in 2023. Despite their efforts on the field, Hull City faces challenges in drawing interest towards their shirts, indicating a disconnect between the club and its fan base.
Following Hull City, in second place is Rotherham United's football shirts. The club's kit also struggled to capture fan attention, with only 2,640 searches throughout 2023. The club is clearly facing an uphill battle in competing for fan interest amidst more prominent teams in the league.
Peterborough United similarly grappled with low search numbers for their shirts, with 2,700 searches in 2023. Their relegation in the 2021/22 season hasn't helped their popularity, revealing their shirts as the third least popular in the UK.
Wycombe Wanderers' shirts also ranked among the least sought-after, with a modest 3,450 searches recorded in 2023, ranking fourth. The club's popularity from their 2020/21 stint in the Championship League was evidently short-lived.
Preston North End faced similar struggles in generating interest for their football shirts, with only 3,630 searches in 2023. The club's low ranking, as the fifth least popular shirt, is surprising given their consistent position in the Championship League since 2015.

We're above Peterborough that's all that matters 😂
(Throws idea for BSM half and half shirt in bin)
Is that because it was impossible to get a shirt earlier this season, so people gave up searching?
It's misleading when they only have 2 shirts available. The red O'neils and 1974-1977 old home shirt.
That likely wouldn't impact the amount of times people have searched, just the number of results yielded per search.
To be honest tho, I've never heard of this site before now. I think my normal browsing for a new football shirt involves going directly to the club and then SportsDirect. I've been stung before on sites like this where they have then sent me a complete knock-off which I wouldn't have purchased if an accurate image was displayed.
It also doesn't show how we perform in terms of 'shirt interest' in comparison with our League One peers.
So it's not entirely unexpected that the smallest fish in a pool of big Champo and Prem clubs would struggle.
As usual with an Aloysius post - "nothing to see here".
It’s only teams that have recently been in the Premier League and Championship, you’d expect us to be near the bottom.
A team with an average attendance of nearly 18,000 had just over 2000 searches for their shirt in an entire year? Somehow I very much struggle to believe that...
There is a clear difference for me. How many fans of club X are there. How many of them attend matches regularly and how many do not.
Then the do nots would more likely to be the ones that buy merchandise online or search.
I suspect we have a maximum of 10k fans who would buy merchandise (or parents buying for kids).
Of that, I expect at least 80% would go to a home game and therefore would just buy at the ground.
For large teams where it is difficult to get tickets and fans are spread over the country then obviously online searches will be higher.
Am not sure what the point / objective of the article is, really didn’t take into account huge amounts of other factors.
they probably knew to go to the Hull city site and order direct! It’s not rocket science!!!
Is it really that slow a Monday, that this gets any traction at all?
I never search for any football shirt.
I've spent hours looking at football kits on the internet
I spend hours just looking for my own shirt on a Saturday. I think my good lady wife hides it deliberately to stop me going. Hasn't worked yet though,
I think that's what Tim Berners Lee invented it for...
All over this: http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/
This is great too https://www.footballkitarchive.com/
The perfect non-Wycombe Gasroom shirt.
I only ever look at pictures of football kits on the internet.
it's a long time til Christmas... 🤨
I don't find it at all unfortunate that we are a small club. I just look around at who we are competing with and say: "How are you not miles out of sight? Your shirt ranked #34 in internet searches, after all!"
Interested to know the exact keywords they based this on - 'football kits' gets far higher search volume than 'football shirts'. Obviously we'd still rank low, but I doubt the absolute figures are that small.
Or the opposite, the number is only that high because people only made the search because they couldn't see one in real life!
We have one of the most memorable shirts in the league - one of a very few that is instantly recognizable with no sponsor or badge.
