Cheltenham are no giants either, have to imagine that despite all the talk over the last few years he didn't actually get many viable offers. Having spent a lot of time in non-league does seem to be held against some players as does not being particularly young with high resale potential.
I think this is the best 11 we could field at the moment, which makes me feel a little more positive (LB, MF and 10s/Ws the priorities) - but there are some old players in there and I worry we won't be able to add sufficient strength in depth.
@ReturnToSenda replace Young with Ward and that is an ok starting line up. JMac and TJ off the bench with 20 to go and a couple of decent loanees to challenge / cover key positions and that is a solid League One team which is probably where we belong. No need to panic just yet.
Do people genuinely think we aren't going to sign anyone? Not a big fan of that eleven but it won't start too many games hopefully.
Surely there are hundreds of out of contract players who will find their demands need reality checks in the next couple of weeks along with the usual people who will get a bit of a shock later on in the summer when they don't make starting elevens or even squads.
We held out too long last year in our annual poker game but we didn't know for most of the summer that Utd had promised us a keeper and we had Alfie on standby if he could be fit and a championship offer didn't come through.
It's fair to say that if we are going to rely more on loans this season (not sure that that's definitely the plan, but it's been rumoured) then those will probably happen later, as other teams finalise their own transfer business, and find that that means that people have been pushed down the pecking order who'd do very nicely for us.
But we can only have (I think?) 5 loanees playing at one time, so any kind of movement right now would be good, as we need more than 5 signings.
Although the longer we leave it to get that first signing, you can just imagine the bigger the expectation (especially from the Facebook lot...). Woe betide us if the first close season signing is a decent (but unspectacular) L1 squad player...
I must admit, I've stopped being concerned about no new players as every summer we sign new players...just not when we expected to. Not that I expect this to be the case, but there is an argument for having seasoned pros and a set of young players possibly given their chance to shine (or not) as so many Gasroomers have pointed out with younglings in the past...what's the point of having them if they are not going to play?

After looking on Wiki, I can't help but think the only reason is that he was born in Gravesend, which is 20 mins from Gillingham.
A move "closer to home" maybe? On bigger wages?
Like Paul Mullin at Wrexham. I'm sure the money's great but being close to home plays a part.

Didn't they get taken over but some mega rich guy and buy their way out of trouble last season? This could explain why Alfie May went there. 🤷♂️
Yep, said similar on the previous page.
Moving back "home" clearly a decent factor in it.
It's not exactly like Charlton is hard to reach from Gravesend
Do you know they made an offer?
Last pay day for a number of players coming to the end of their contracts. Are we about to get some news?
Especially if you are a Wigan or Reading player
All the talk was they made an offer but then slightly withdrew it because of their ownership issues.
If we can get a cheese based pun run going we could hit 2k. That'll add a double gloss to liven the summer up.

Champions by Christmas
How many of them will be fit on the opening day?
Disappointing lack of cheese puns to brie honest.
How many is too many to get the game called off?

Strong lineup if we can bring a senior starting centre mid in.
It'd at least get us through the first games decently.
Not a lot on the bench obviously.
With the Gaffer moving dugout to be closer to the supporters, perhaps a few might be persuaded to sit in it to make up the numbers.
I’ll bring my boots
”What time do we kick off?”
”What time can you get here?”

I don't think anyone really thinks that, but our situation is a little concerning this close to the start of the season.
Agreed.
If we were a well polished machine that had a strong last 3months of the season it'd be less caution.

Edam if you do, it's Gouda be difficult, you must be crackers to think otherwise.

(I have no cheese puns to offer.)
