I wasn't quite in line. But it looked offside to me and I was expecting the flag to go up. Especially as I thought Wing didn't cover the Rover's player, as he knew he was running into an offside position. But the fact Wing didn't seem to protest to the lino after the goal may suggest it was onside.
Agree ref had a decent game. I liked the fact he clamped down early on Bristol's and our time wasting. Always annoys me refs booking players after 80+ minutes for time-wasting, if it's been going on for most of the game. Not sure what they can do about keepers going down 'injured'. Poor Stryjek does seem to suffer quite badly from late injuries when we're winning.
I agree with most of that @Shev. However, I think it is difficult for the referee in real time to always clearly decide a player has dived (i'm not advocating the introduction of Dev's pet VAR though). I believe diving could be significantly reduced by every league match being reviewed and bookings being retrospectively awarded to those that have conned the on field officials. Such reviews could perhaps be carried out by a panel of retired referees.
The card system as used in hockey would benefit football a lot. If you say anything untoward to the umpire you go off for two minutes on a green card. A more serious infringement and it's off for usually 10 minutes on a yellow card. No one argues about it and the game continues. They also have revolving substitutions which I am not advocating. Red cards are very rare.
Or giving nothing when Wheeler got absolutely clattered in the air in the second half - then penalising us for exactly the same thing moments later. He also didn't clamp down on Coutts' pissing about at corners, but he generally did well.
I think another shout to GA and Brandon Hanlan. Big call to drop him against his former club after scoring last week. Mustard would have been itching to play, but GA made a big call. It shows the strength in depth of this group and with a fully fit squad, it gives us that unpredictable value that we probably try to achieve from not making a big thing of injuries.
Can't wait for the away game against them with a fully fit Mawson and potentially Thompson.
I know it would never happen, but I would love GA to openly wonder why Barton has not had a second tier job and then say something like "It must be the unhinged rage, laundry list of arrests and general arrogance."
I have the feeling that Ainsworth would take it in the way @eric_plant suggested and be delighted that he has frustrated opposition managers into making stupid comments.
I think both Chris and Glenactico have got it spot on and I’m still astonished that anyone could think Barton’s comments were reasonable in any way. I am proud that we have a manager who conducts himself with dignity whether we win or lose.
@glasshalffull I agree, I’m sure at some point he will be asked on his thoughts etc before the game but won’t even mention it too much and get involved. It’s the best way to keep others wound up and to lose their own focus. But inside the changing room those words will probably be played on repeat!!
I hope you’re right because I’ve just seen his full list of quotes after the game and they are disgraceful. This from a man whose record sheet on and off the field is both shameful and shocking. They’re on a website called Bristol Live if you’re interested.
Just read the quotes on Bristol live. The man is an abhorrent individual. No humility in defeat. Even knows our players wages apparently!!!! I would be embarrassed to have him as a manager. Be good to stuff them in the return match. No need for Ainsworth to do the team talk, just put the Bristol live article on the tactics board in the dressing room. That should galvanise the team.
You would think that someone who was twice convicted of violent crimes off the field and received nine red cards as a player- and they are just the most well known of his multitude of misdemeanours- would be keen to keep a low profile. Not Barton.

It's one of those classics from football fans.
Like when all those gasroom experts declared something was definitely up, how it was time for Gareth to go and similar sentiments.
Roll onto a full squad and we're right in the playoff mix again!

The ref took the first step in a set of rules and enforcements which would improve the game a lot.
It was Wing, Taff not even in frame, was still in Revs for the first five mins of the game. Luckily turned up for the rest of the match though.

This makes a lot of sense, @mooneyman. Football could be so much more watchable with just a few common sense moves.
Possibly referee Gill's only mistake, in not booking Marquis for that dive.

Although on corners, I do wonder how much football people on the terrace watch - the ball only has to OVERHANG the quadrant!
Not sure what you’re getting at here?
The incessant cries of 'IT'S NOT IN THE QUADRANT!' at every corner
The best bit was when their man moved it about a metre outside to utterly wind the drone army up. That was good pantomime.
I'm guessing not many watch as much as you :-)
It's a bit like the Japan goal against Spain, where just the slightest bit of the ball was still over the line.
It's funny how players could ever feel they gain an advantage by the ball being a few inches off the quadrant at a corner.
Messi doesn't do it!
That was very funny
Were you at the game?
The terrace was pretty non-plussed from where I was stood. The Frank Adams was much more vocal over it.
Yep, and there was a lot of noise around me. But it was coming from all stands.
The pocket of fans right next to it in the terrace led by everyone's favourite shirtless drummer were going mad over it.

Barton has already provided the material for our pre match teamtalk ahead of the reverse fixture

What a prick: https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/every-word-joey-barton-said-7973592. I really hope Gaz's apparent friendship with him is just a facade.
