Interesting question. It’s an anti-establishment protest because a lot of Liverpudlians believe the city has been neglected by various governments and they see the wealth and privilege enjoyed by the royal family as a symbol of the division between ‘them and us’. It’s a widely held view irrespective of any football allegiance but it has become more vehement in recent times. I have been to many cup finals involving Liverpool over the years and I don’t recall the anthem being so widely booed, if at all. I have to agree with those posters who find our national anthem rather uninspiring compared to many countries. The Italian anthem is a personal favourite of mine and here’s a trivia question for the gasroom intelligentsia….why is the Spanish anthem unique? No googling!
Last week I covered a European tie between Vaduz of Lichtenstein and Apollon Limasoll (I get all the big games!) so I think I know this. Isn’t the tune and some of the lyrics similar to our anthem?
Thanks for the local view. I’ve heard similar but not from a native. So are we to expect (if games go ahead) booing at Everton v West Ham and Chelsea v Liverpool? West Ham fans made a good noise on Thursday so interesting if these leads to heightened emotions.
Think they also used to win the Welsh fa cup fairly regularly whilst playing in the English league, but Monaco have been doing great in the French for years too albeit all via £ rather than fans
Don't think it's that black and white, there will be kids that boo while their parents respect the silence and probably vice versa. Seperately there are some threads on twitter referencing the 10th anniversary of the Hillsborough panel, the one where the Government had to apologise and admit a raft of facts and mistakes earlier denied....but eventually nobody got more than a fine.
‘My Country, Tis of Thee’ is an American anthem sung to the tune of GSTK. Not the official anthem since 1931 (thank you Wikipedia) but my wife, who is American, knows it well and recalls singing it on occasion.
i wasn’t familiar with this anthem so I listened to a couple of versions. Katherine Jenkins a bit of a no no - muffled diction (and mrs micra can’t stand her, for reasons which, fortunately perhaps, escape me). Version linked above preferable. Never heard of Nathan Lay but you can hear every word.

I'm with you...not sure why it got a thumbs down. God Save the Queen (the one without drums, power cords and a heroin addled bass player) is a dirge.

No words. What's my prize?
Always remember the talksport pundit saying its not just the English players that don't sing.
Another question what's interesting about the Lichtenstein anthem?
Bang on..you win a night out with Alan Swann, second prize two nights out with Alan Swann.

It sung to a familiar tune (GSTK) , but that's possibly the least interesting thinh about it.
It's the same music as God Save the Queen.
I think it had words under Franco, but it's one of four current anthems without any.
The other countries are...
Well, one is the world's oldest republic - and the other two used to be part of the same country as each other 🤔
So Spain isn’t unique then? Always thought it was.
Nope! One of the others has qualified for a World Cup before as well actually.
I Vow To Thee My Country is a great shout. Absolutely beautiful piece of music
I think Vaduz are the first team to qualify for Europe while playing in another country's league?
Wait, no. Monaco!
You’re correct they play in the Swiss League because there is no equivalent in their country. They qualified by winning the Lichtenstein Cup.
I believe Liechtenstein is also one of only two double-landlocked countries in the world, the other being...?
Swansea?
Ah yeah, won the League Cup
Kosovo?

I'd imagine that so long as we have a monarchy the national anthem needs also to be a tribute to them.
Many would disagree with anything that had religious overtones too so Jerusalem isn't going to fit the bill.
Not sure Henderson’s actions have smoothed things out judging from the replies

The same tune as our anthem I think

Indeed, very handy when you’re at a patriotic events stateside and still want to sing.
Not a sentimental type but that always gets me more more than the National Anthem ever has. Funny old game.
