I have no doubt that had the game gone ahead, the silence at Adams Park for both Bill and Her Maj would have been impeccably respected by Monarchists, Republicans and those who give not a toss either way despite the oppression of our authoritarian regime and without causing a civil war.
It looks like the Arsenal Europa League match has been postponed due to the stretched police resources however the Chelsea match is allowed to take place on the Wednesday evening. This is prob because Chelsea's ground is quite a bit smaller in size so might not need an complete police presence. It might also be the calm before the operational storm for the MET Police Force. They expect queues that might be up to 6-9 hours long for the public to walk past and pay their respects to the Queen. If you add into this that they expect 10 times the amount of people that were on the streets for William & Kate's wedding that will be on the streets for the funeral, drafting in Police officers from different forces in the country AND working with all of the different countries' security forces and their world leaders. If you consider everything like this, it does put things into perspective the job on their hands and if they can encourage all the London based clubs to play away this weekend, it will be one less thing that they have to manage.
I know and understand the frustration over the postponements of the games the weekend just gone and that it would make more sense to postpone THIS weekend's fixtures (17th-18th Sept) just so everything that be fully prepared for Monday's service.
I think it would depend how a person showed their disrespect. Keeping silent when others are applauding or refusing to sing the national anthem would be unlikely to offend anyone, but shouting during a minute’s silence would probably provoke an angry reaction, and understandably so. It surely comes down to dignity, restraint and understanding the feelings of others.
Protest by declining to participate in the acknowledgment of the passing of the queen - no problem. Standing there and booing? You would be better off maybe stepping out to the loo for a couple of minutes. And no of course you can’t legalise definition of protest. Even if someone wants to pour p1ss over themselves in a public place.
I don't disagree but I would argue that reacting angrily (albeit with perceived provocation) is not exactly showing dignity, restraint or the understanding of how others can feel.
Just to be clear, I am firmly of the belief that being disrespectful to anyone who may be mourning is just rude and wrong and, in the interests of any informed debate on the monarchy in this instance, counter-productive. But in any situation some people will behave like idiots (either because they are, or are egged-on to be, or are suitably alcohol (etc)-fuelled) and surely we should be mature enough to just basically ignore their idiotic behaviour (or at least offer no more that a quiet word of advice).
@glasshalffull Enlighten me on your home city's current anti establishment / monarchy / country stance? I am not sure I fully understood what TAA was doing by refusing to sing the anthem or the Liverpool fans booing. I don't even know if this applies to Everton as the chances of them appearing in a final is pretty remote in all fairness
I have always considered all anthems a battle cry to unify team and crowd. It is hard not to get emotional when you see a team link arms and blast out their national anthem. A pledge of commitment to their country, to their countryman, not really a comment on socio economic conditions.
In MY opinion. Other opinions are welcome and respected.
For me, the problem with our national anthem is that it's simply a hymn of praise to the monarch, with a solitary line about defending our laws in the second verse that doesn't tend to get sung. If the monarchy isn't your thing, there's not much to inspire.
As long as players don't stand around giving the finger or suchlike, I don't see the problem. It's just a another topic for Piers Morgan to get in a state about.
I agree with @glasshalffull's comments about showing 'dignity, restraint and understanding the feelings of others'. That's why I'll silently stand for the minute and then let the game commence. I think some people call that 'wokery' these days.
Anyone who took issue with that would be very odd indeed.
Our anthem is absolutely dreadful. Can’t stand it. This would be an optimal time to switch it to Jerusalem.
I see the fixture against Port Vale has been rescheduled to 1 Nov. A (probably chilly) Tuesday night on the back of two consecutive home games. It could be 4 consecutive home games if we’re drawn at home in the Cup. So I imagine we’ll get a dreadful attendance for the rearranged game.

Suppose it depends what else the police force is up to. I would imagine the Met being quite stretched but no idea about Derby.
Is this a joke?

Not really, seeing as some Derby fans, even if a minority, openly suggested they would cause trouble at our games against each other

Many England players over the years have not sung the national anthem. Everyone prepares for a big game differently. Get off the lads back.
Even politicians dont always sing anthems....

Yet to hear a good reason why players 'have' to sing the national anthem

was that on Twitter?
Of course, where else ... sigh
Fair enough mate, mind boggles sometimes

Realistically you can't have a national anthem named after a highly controversial partially occupied capital of at least one and arguably two states.

Is it a little ironic that it might not be such a strain on resources if they paid their taxes.
Land of hope and glory was a fine stand in at times, if a little unlikely as a sentiment.
I Vow to Thee My Country is by far the best choice. God Save the King/Queen is utterly dreadful.
If Wycombe had a national anthem, what would you pick?
The Pistols did a decent version!
And now the remaining members are going to have to record it all over again with the new lyrics...
I’m sure they’ll find a way to wring some more filthy lucre out of it!
God Save The King?
God Save The Koalas
Most Prem games are going ahead this weekend apparently:
