Realistic Signing(s) for the Summer

I think there might be a few departures, either released, sold or loaned out to then help with our squad 'improvement'. This might happen on transfer day like last season with Kashket & Samuel being released then signing for other clubs straight away.

I've mentioned about Wheeler leaving us before (and it got rubbished) but I still think his position & game time is under threat. Another Wakely, signed on a 2yr deal and hasn't lived up to potential, he didnt even start many games when on loan at Maidenhead.... Could a club also come in for Thompson? Out of contract next season, has to compete with Wing, Scowen, Gape, Freeman & Mehmeti for a space in the centre of midfield.

  • Autos the aim, but maybe steadily improving the squad having no time specification.

But in relation to your other point, at the moment, a good summer will be getting a good keeper and centre back in.

That's a big enough mission as it is, so it's hard to see anything else happening due to needing to shift others out.

+ Young! But we can't afford to lose Thommo and I don't think we will. Wheeler you want to keep hold of for his sheer versatility - seriously underrated in that sense imo.

Bit harsh on Wakely as he spent a chunk of the season injured, did he not? Admittedly, apart from right after he signed, I don't think I've heard Gaz mention him in interviews as a bright one coming through.

  • I completely agree with you on Wheeler. I got panned for suggesting his days were numbered in March … I’ll be surprised if he’s still a Wycombe player come the opening day.

Can see one of Young or Freeman being loaned out as a minimum. Probably Freeman. Maybe even both if Wheeler stays.

Kai Kai was never favoured by Gaz last season. Sometimes not even making the match day squad over development squad players. God knows what he’s like in training. Can see him being let go.

We’re judging the squad far too prematurely. There’s weeks until Burton at home and then even after then there’s ages left in the window.

  • Have a feeling Rob C mentioned him (Wakely) in his recent message so maybe not completely forgotten and with a good injury free pre-season who knows

  • Sorry, I completely forgot about Young. But thats way too many players for just 2 positions and sooner or later someone is going to get upset and will want to play more 1st team football and it'll be interesting to see if GA will keep them around or move them on quickly.

  • Someone remind me, are loans outside of the squad limit?

Or is it the being under 21 that makes them so?

  • It will be interesting to see how Young fits in.

Scowen - Wing - Thompson - Gape top of the pecking order, and then he's 5th behind them?

If he was someone we'd specifically picked up for the development team, that'd be one thing, but he's on a 3 year deal here, which is usually the domain of a top quality player who'll be a mainstay.

If they are under 21, they don't count towards our squad numbers. No limit on GK's age as they don't count. Over 21's need to be registered in our league squad but we can register someone new if the loaned player get recalled (does that make sense?)

  • So a couple of U21 loanees becomes more of a sensible option now there's this limit.

Although one being a keeper in effect makes no difference.

  • Same rules as any other player - which is one advantage over the Champ, where they count towatds the limit regardless of age.

  • With 5 subs this year I can see our midfielders seeing much more game time - fresh midfield legs back end of a game can’t be bad thing

  • Totally forgot about that! Going to be really interesting, should see a return of 'specialist' attacking subs too.

  • Tricky to tell as they weren't all fit but there's a few players that didn't really get much of a look in last season, and if they play more then of course others won't. Not standing in people's way is a recurring theme so wouldn't be too surprised if a few more go.

  • We may not get there again any time soon but Promotion by whatever means must surely be the aim every season...or what's the point?

  • Promotion wasn't on even the most deluded fan's agenda when we were in the championship!

Some seasons have to be about staying up, then you can aim to push on a little.

  • Totally agree and what’s wrong with Rob saying our goal is through automatically. We achieved over 80 points last year, kept the majority of the squad and hopefully some new additions , then why not be optimistic.

Nothing wrong with being optimistic about automatic promotion if it's based in realism - but at the moment, the squad isn't quite at that level.

  • Wouldn't be surprised to see Nick Freeman leave on-loan for game time. Would be quite an undertaking for him to suddenly take off. Played just 7 times in the Championship, then got injured. Brilliantly we gave him a contract to get him fit, but is there really a place for him in the side?

I think it was done with genuine intentions, but that extension might prove to be a good PR move and not a lot else. I'd love to be wrong! Freeman finally firmly establishing himself as a Wycombe player would be wonderful.

  • With a more fluid on the deck style of play from the team this might just be Freeman’s season. Go on Nick!

  • He's silky and a good guy, but he just has a heck of a lot of quality to get in front of.

However, if he does it, he'll be playing well, which is all we want - the players on the pitch playing well!

  • He left on Loan 2 season's ago to play for Leyton Orient (I believe) and was fairly average for them. Hopefully, he'll come back with a blast this year!

  • Of course, we weren't aiming for the Premier League when we cheated our way to the second tier @Malone but Rob C when asked saying we're looking for automatic promotion (even if we don't get it) should not be seen as unrealistic pie in the sky...if he had said 'We're years away from competing in this League...' that would bother me.

My Eagle eyes just spotted on an email received just now, tune in today to hear GA's thoughts on our latest signing...

Looks like today is the day...

    Bishop?

  • Played just seven (?) games as a very good right wingback, in League 1, not the Championship. He’d be competing with Jason McCarthy in that position of course but he may be seen as a Swiss penknife kind of player and, for my money (meagre as it is), I’d put him ahead of David Wheeler.
