The reference earlier to ‘Mr Wing’ conjured up a picture of a middle-aged looking moustachioed footballer wearing mid calf length shorts and a blue cap with a gold tassel.
The ever-perfect Wikipedia states Gape has only ever scored three goals for us. Does that sound right? One in 2016-17, the Cheltenham goal, and then one in a comeback win (Doncaster? Scunthorpe?) in 18-19?
@Alexo: referring to anyone as ‘Mr’ is very old-fashioned. And I suppose it was a dig at @NiceCarrots’ quaint turn of phrase. No-one refers to footballers as Mr. Do they???
Thanks @Dickie. It sounded like a Northern Ireland Assembly political party. Deep Lying Playmaker is new to me but I’ve never played subbuteo, never mind FIFI 2024 or whatever they call it. Nick Freeman was terrific at right wingback until that horrendous challenge that put him out for the rest of the season. Difficult for him to get back into that position, especially if Jason McCarthy has worked hard on his crossing during the close season. I can see him in the Wheeler role next season - a very high quality, polished Swiss Army knife of a player.
@Twizz I never mentioned anything about their wage as most clubs out of the Premier League don't display that into now. Also when did I use the sentence "As football fans we have a right to know". If you are going to quote me, please get the basic details right....
Clubs normally display a contract length for many reason normally linked to their commercial value. Example: If I had a child who wanted Gape's name & number on his back, I would use his contract as an indicator as to how long he'll be around for ( I know other factors apply like being sold / retiring) I doubt people would get his name/number if he's about to leave?
Only just catching up so a bit late to the party. @ReturnToSenda ’absolutely have the right to know’ is there a clause in the club constitution that I have missed? If not we have absolutely no right to know, it’s a business negotiation/ decision between club management and player/agent.
Why should we be left guessing? That's just disrespectful to fans. Maybe it is becoming increasingly the done thing (I mentioned Wednesday), but I see no reason why - it's very strange.
but. In the scheme of thing a case can be made for keeping it relatively quiet during transfer windows.
if you are are a young and promising footballer recently released by a Premier club (for example).
you are looking at maybe a back up role in a solid League 1 club with the hope that you can make the first team as a regular starter in a year.
you look at the list of clubs your agent says have been showing interest. You see that at one of them, there is an established player in your preferred position who has just happily announced a 3 year extension.
how quickly do you move on to the next club on your agents list?
(I know that before you signed you would check these things out but by then the manager may have had the chance to sell the club a lot more to you…)
@Otter87 given that I quoted exactly what you said I don't see the problem.
You asked a question, I gave an answer.
My last paragraph isn't directed at you specifically. Perhaps you should read what I actually wrote. If you are going to be offended, please get the basic details right....
@Twizz you only mentioned me in your post and while it "isn't directed at you specifically" your post was never opened out to other people's views, if you want to be technically correct, thats why you got the reply.
However, lets draw a line under this and we can move on with what this chat is actually focused on
@ReturnToSenda ’why should we be left guessing?’ is a very different point to ‘absolutely have the right to know’ , prompting debate rather than false assertion being a good thing.
I signed a contract of employment with a six month probationary period in the mid-1980s and I've never seen one since...I'm assuming nobody else ever came in for me.
To be fair, I have a desk tucked away in the corner of the office so they may have just missed me still being here for the last 35 years. But as long as I'm getting paid and can take the odd Tuesday night off...

DLP @ReturnToSenda ?
If he's only a fan one day of the week how can he know? ;)
That didn’t work for LX1 either. Missed him lately.
Really??? It conjured up the image of a second rate chicken and Chips shop, down the back streets of a grotty town to me 🤷🤣
Took me sometime but I’m guessing deep lying playmaker?

One of my favourite players, goals or no goals.

No... And I get that.... But my quote still stands 🤣
The Cheltenham goal is the Chesterfield goal I’m assuming?
Yeah, sorry, been playing too much Football Manager

The Polish Army knife?
Bluntly, no.
I guess that one didn't make the cut
Yes - don't think I can blame autocorrect for that one!

Little @Otter87 is fine to get the name and number on his shirt. He has extended.

I can’t really say I care either way.

Haha Thanks @Wendoverman. Little Otter will be pleased (if he doesn't change his mind between now and the next game!)

@Wendoverman How are we meant to believe you passed your probationary period.....? 😜
Pretty sure that was 6 months probation with 200 hours of community service.

35 years even puts Blooms to shame. They better have a statue of you!
