Cricket World Cup
Today, the Cricket World Cup starts in India with England playing New Zealand. It will be a very interesting competition and I reckon there will be a few surprises. Sri Lanka seem to be in form with the Asia Cup competition (losing badly to India in the Final), Australia having a shocking warm up and only having 1 front-line spinner in their squad, you can never write off Holland and how quickly could the nation turn on India if they have a few bad results?
Only time will tell!

I know it's an enormous stadium and India aren't involved, but that looks like and extremely sparse crowd for the opening game?
That would be because they only started ticket sales a week ago?
Two paced pitch, I think we should be able to defend this. Spinners the key and I suspect Joe Root will be very tricky to score against on this pitch and could provide a vital option if Ali or Livingstone don't get it right.
Need a couple of early wickets from Woakes and Curran, assuming Wood will bowl middle overs and at the death.
Don’t think we’ve got this one.
Thats what you get when you abandon the 50 over game at County level. All of these players on play 50 overs while playing for England but the T20 leagues and the Hundred here has almost killed off their exposure
Disagree in one context, as none of these players would play 50 ovs for their counties as they'd always be on England duty or at the IPL / Big Bash.
However, to not have some kind of domestic 50 over competition is not the best choice.
Sad to see England getting annihilated.
Oh dear
That was a pasting
Shows what is possible with sensible batting rather than the "bish-bash-bosh" England seem to favour at the moment.
it's one game
we're world champions
Sounds organised!
Do any of the top nations' players regularly play domestic 50-over cricket?
Yes, Australia have the "Marsh One-Day Cup" that runs in-between their 4-day competition
Same with South Africa
India has quite a few as their season is almost 11 months long because of their climate.
England have abandoned their 50 Over ame is its now a mixture of who ever is left over from not being picked in the Hundred and their reserves/youth members. We try and run 4 competitions in our limited season and there isn't room. T20, County Championships, Hundred and 50-over. As the money is in the T20 & Hundred, there are some members like Bairstow, Curran etc who haven't picked up a red ball in the last 2 or 3 seasons and haven't played Class A 50 over cricket since we won the World Cup in 2019.
Big Bash takes place in Dec - No cricket is being played here
IPL - Played March to May (if in the final) so they still have 4 months to play in the English County Games (outside of International fixtures.
The fifty over game is certainly the overlooked middle child of cricket at the moment.
Bet your bottom dollar we won’t be this year.
It is. The Hundred is an abomination. How we can have a 100 ball game and a 120 ball format I'll never know.
The Hundred seems pretty entertaining to me, although I did initially find it quite confusing at first as someone who's used to 'normal' cricket.
I have an allegiance to Kent, my home county but have no affinity whatsoever with any of the rather weirdly named teams competing in the strange cricketing phenomenon called the 100s. It just isn’t cricket.
I enjoy the international T20 and ODI matches when England are winning so I’m not as much of a purist as our absent and much missed friend, .@EddieMonsoon.
The Hundred needs scraping asap. Just use the money to pimp up our own T20 tournament
It's used as a money spinning but has been losing money since it's been created. They need to revamp the T20 competition, maybe make that a more franchised competition like Australia but use all of the county grounds in the leagues
The ground where England are playing today is like Adams Park but less idyllic
The attendance for this World Cup has been awful. It doesn't help that India have super-sized stadiums (most are 70,000plus) but when the games start, only a handful of people are in.
Either the ticketing has been awful and they haven't sold the tickets they should have done
Or they have priced the locals out of being able to afford it.
I suspect the latter, sadly.
When do India play Pakistan? That's *got* to be a sellout.
That’s got to be a sellout.
This Saturday 14 October. 9.30 am our time.
Win probability India 67% Pakistan..,,,,,
Well, you can probably guess !
Well India have only just granted some of the Pakistan media their visa's to come into India so I can guess that it'll be: 85% - India Fans, 2% - Pakistan fan and the rest will be the world's media and Neutrals
This competition in India is making me more and more nervous. Issues with tickets, attendance, media/coverage (there have ben several moments where internet has dropped out on TMS coverage), visa issues and grounds being dirty or damaged & outfields being borderline dangerous. You would have thought the ICC would have done a check beforehand to make sure everything was up to standard before it took place
Oh dear England
The Netherlands just beat South Africa - bloody hell!
That's a much bigger shock than England losing to Afghanistan, as at the end of the day, although we should've won, the Afgans are a decent team with some top players
