Vokes Contract Terms

It seems that someone on Oxford's forum knows the exact terms of Vokes' contract with us, and the details of his option to sign for another year:

Post in thread 'The League 1 Promotion Run In' https://yellowsforum.co.uk/threads/the-league-1-promotion-run-in.7191/post-528818

Sound plausible? Not sure how a random PNL fan would know all that. Perhaps Vokes staying depends on us going up?

  • He'll stay regardless

  • £10k a week sounds like crazy money to me. Wasn’t our entire playing budget a few seasons back only around 2.5 million? I realised times have changed but surely not by that kind of margin.

Obviously no way of knowing if the thread is even remotely accurate of course.

  • Never believe anonymous people on forums claiming to be “in the know”

  • Interesting. But if we received a little windfall from the Championship, £10k a week is not a ridiculous wage by championship standards. We have probably taken a bit of a punt and said to Vokes "we will pay you this amount, if anyone comes in for you we will listen (and there would be a fee), if we don't go up, we will pay you less and you're in the shop window". Alternatively, if nobody comes in for him, he can leave on a free and pick up next to nothing in wages for another League 1 club.

  • Ignore that, there wouldn't be a fee....as his contract is up. But is anyone going to pay him close to £10k?

  • How do I delete a post?!? Haha

  • Have absolutely no inside knowledge, or creditable sources however it doesn't take much to speculate that Stoke offered Vokes a lump sum to terminate his contract and we said we'd pay a certain amount and he'd be as good as guaranteed to start - thereby having the opportunity to score and maybe pick up a better contract.

I'll suggest Stokes paid him 30% of what he was due (£10k per week) and we added £5k per week so he effectively took a 50% pay cut but might get another 2yr contract at the end of it - either with us or somewhere else, doesn't matter.

My speculation - and that's exactly what it is - is about as likely to be true as the guy on the Poxford forum @WanderingDays. I wouldn't be worried that some Poxford yokel has insider knowledge on Vokes' contract.

  • Is it not possible that football has made Vokes a very rich man and as he comes towards the end of his career, his priority is to enjoy perhaps his last couple of years at a club and with a manager well known for treating players with respect? Perhaps money was well down his list of priorities.
    All speculation.

    All speculation.

I'd say not just possible but highly likely, Sam Vokes seems like a very decent bloke.

  • Is this the same PNL that claimed he had inside knowledge that Ainsworth would be sacked if WWFC wasn't promoted?

  • Richie moonlighting? He always knew things.

  • Always seemed nailed on that Vokes would have got a hefty figure from Stoke to move on. That happens frequently. Even Wycombe have paid up contracts many a time, albeit not to that level!
Just a question of how much of a wage we've given him.

Let's hope we go up either way to end any debate on whether it's been worth it!

    Derby!

  • Aloyisus must be licking his mitts at his great plan of fuelling loadsadough into one player for a one off punt actually having happened. Albeit in his eyes a year late.

Unless it was The Wrong Player...

  • I do enjoy a good 'random bloke on the internet says' story. Amazes me how they get any traction at all but they do. We live in a mad world.

For every nutcase making stuff up though, there will be someone who does in fact know the ins and outs.
I knew Bayo had signed for us a couple of days before the announcement for instance due to a tip off and I used to work with a girl whose sister is married to a famous premier league player who has managed in the same division we're in.

    People do find stuff out.

  • For every 1000 nutcases making stuff up there will be someone who does in fact know the ins and outs but they'd probably be breaking a confidence and upsetting their own interests by sharing it randomly on the internet.

Not sure about your one to one ratio on nutcases to people who know stuff. If true that answers my question.

I don't know as much stuff now as I used to but when I did I generally heard them in confidence and kept that confidence. I once knew of a Boyzone comeback a year before they announced it. Never told anyone.

  • There's no real surprises here anyway. Stoke had to pay him off as he was a high earner who was out of their plans. We paid over what we normally do as he'd be a big signing and we had done well financially last year. We signed him for one year with a variety of options for a second if we're all happy. I'm fairly sure most people knew that within days of him signing.

Now here's a fun rabbit trail to go down! Has anyone else ever been ITK for a non-Wycombe or non-Football situation?

I knew in advance of the official civil service report and the subsequent police investigation that Boris DID know about the parties he attended during lockdown...does that count?

    For sure!

  • Most of us know that Bozzer is a incorrigible serial liar without it being confirmed in a police investigation @Wendoverman.

It would be wrong to comment on this while there are a numerous investigations taking place...

  • The ultimate ITK is the bloke who got the selfie with Vokes

  • I was privy to many things in the football world. As mentioned above most of what I was told was "in confidence", as such sharing would have broken the trust so had to keep my cards very close to my chest. It can be a real gut buster when you read/hear of rumours that you know are so wide of the mark, but can't actually tell that person. As such, I often wondered if it was better not to know anyway?

When I lived in Las Vegas I knew someone in law enforcement many years ago, and according to him a significant terrorism attempt was foiled at a Strip casino without details ever being released to the public. I think it was a vehicle rigged with major explosives in a basement car park.

A relative used to work in the military for NATO and would often warn us we had no idea of how close and how many times things came to 'kicking off' during the Cold War (without giving out any details of course!). Turned his hair white. I would imagine recent events would be an eye-opener for sure. I also used to work with a journalist from Up North, who regaled us with a lot of scurrilous football stories...all quite believable but I'm still not sure if any of them were true!

    Love your example!
All preconceptions of you have suddenly been destroyed, instead replaced by a teeny bop lover! Amazing :)
