Thanks to Wendoverman and Eric for the good wishes, my recovery is going well but will get even better if we win the next few games!
PS I agree about Alan Green, good voice and technically excellent commentator but far too opinionated. My old boss at Sky once told me: ‘You’re just a commentator, no one cares about your opinions. Stick to calling out names.’
I had the pleasure of working alongside Peter Jones for several years. He had a wonderful talent for choosing the right words at the right time, was suave and sophisticated yet a great mentor for an urchin like me from the back streets of Liverpool. Everyone liked and admired him. His words on the day of the Hillsborough tragedy still live in my memory.
But on here @glasshalffull, whilst respecting that your historical background/position in the club makes it difficult, we’d love to hear even more of your opinions, including perhaps those which hint at the kind of reservations which supporters generally have about aspects of the club generally and the playing side in particular.
Didn’t know that you’d had a major op. Good to hear that you’re on the mend.

Have you ever thought about writing a book about your time in football reporting? You must have a lot of stories to tell
I actually made a start on a biography in the early stages of the first lockdown after being persuaded to do so by a former colleague Mike Ingham who had just had his own book published. However, I lost interest once the football season resumed and I’ve never written a word of it since. Still time (I hope!) now that my health is improving after having a major op.
All the best with the recovery.
Mike Ingham is another of the radio commentators I revere, along with Ron and Peter Jones and many of the current lot.
Used to really like Alan Green as well until he started becoming relentlessly negative during every match making it seem like it was a chore for him to have to be there.
I couldn't agree more with all of this. Listening to the likes of Parry, Ingham, Ron Jones and Bryon Butler through the 70s and 80s was wonderful. The fantastically exotic European commentary in midweek from 8.02pm on Radio 2 - transistor radio in bed in the early days - is a particularly cherished memory. And I remember a sense of really profound sadness on hearing of Peter Jones' death. He was so unpretentiously eloquent, had that wonderful Swansea accent and yet ensured that it was never about him.
Glad to hear that you are in recovery from your major op @glasshalffull. Whatever it was, (having had one or two myself), it is always nice to know that you have come out on the other side and can look forwards. All the best and look forward to your views, even if I don't always agree with them. More often than not I do BTW.

Thanks to you and Micra for the good wishes. I had my pesky prostate removed….by a robot, believe it or not! Did such a good job (with a little help from the surgeon, of course) that I’ve advised Gaz to sign him/her up for next season ?!

Did you say the surgeon was a poacher in the box that knows where the onion bag is.
Good to hear your op went well @glasshalffull .
Absolutely 100% what @our_frank said. And not just the "exotic European commentary", but the 'they'll be singing in the Valleys tonight' FA Cup replays too. An essential and unforgettable part of my adolescence.

I totally agree with your Alan Green sentiments @eric_plant, the rise in his negativity was too much for me in the end.

I forgot Bryon Butler, another giant of the genre

That’s the first bit of ‘inside info’ we’ve had from you @glasshalffull for a while?
You know me, good at keeping my cards to my chest!
Glad to hear you’re on the mend @glasshalffull
Thanks.

Those European mid week competitions “There’ll be dancing in the streets of Raith tonight” hilarious London centric media.
Wishing you a speedy recovery @glasshalffull, glad to hear you are on the mend.
I am thanks and thanks also to morrisital for his kind words.
