Well that's four changes you're going to need to make.

The opening poster probably should have put the non loanees bit in brackets on the title...

    Martin Taylor

    Matty Lawrence
    Alfie Mawson
    Mike Williamson
    Joe Jacobson

    Gareth McCleary
    Steve Thompson
    Josh Scowen
    Steve Guppy

    Sam Vokes
    Sean Devine

    SUBS
    David Stockdale
    Mickey Bell
    Terry Evans
    Keith Ryan
    Dave Carroll
    Darren Currie
    Nathan Tyson
    Tommy Mooney

Major headache over Devine or Tyson, but just imagine Devine and Vokes getting service from Guppy and GMac with JJ / Bell and Lawrence behind them!

If no loaners then Evans for Mawson and Cousins on the bench.

  • Interesting teams. McSporran was an interesting one for me. I seem to remember him being technically awful, but always had you on the edge of your seat with a moment of brilliance (Wolves away) - or simply burning past the opposition.

Did we own Ray Wilkins in the game he played for us against Luton? It certainly wasn't a loan because I think he was unattached. Has to be the biggest name we have ever signed surely?

Has to be the biggest name for sure. But just for the single game.

I wonder who would be the biggest name to play a decent amount of games.

Perhaps Rob Lee? Around 40 games and had 20+ England caps.

  • Yves Makabu-Ma-Kalambay was a pretty big name

    Cyrille Regis, surely.

Neil Lennon up there for sure
    Gary Doherty
You could put up a case for re-signing Steve Guppy
    Michael Duberry
    Gary Ablett (loan I think?)
    Steve Clarridge
    Cyrille Regis
    Guy Whittingham
    Leon Knight
    Stuart Nethercott
    Gary Holt
Ed Savage because he played Ian Beale's son in Eastenders??

  • Akinfenwa

  • Got to be Cyril Regis surely? 140 top flight goals at a time when the English league was the strongest in Europe. Insanely only won 5 England caps. Adored by fans everywhere, despite playing for three big rivals.

  • Mine is a bit 90s heavy. I was tempted to put on a McGleish and Akinfenwa strike partnership though the guile of Garner and Devine (pre-mysterious knee injury) would be an absolute joy to behold.

    Taylor

    Lawrence
    McCarthy
    Stewart
    Jacobson

    Carrol
    Ryan
    Brown
    Guppy

    Garner
    Devine

    Subs:
    Hyde
    Evans
    Bell
    Simpson
    Betsy
    Akinfenwa
    McCleary

  • How good was David Farrell too? Forgot about him

He was quality. Although only for about 65 minutes every 10 matches from memory.

Gary Albert good shout, I think was about 1-2 months. Didn’t we have David Kerslake too or am I making that up?

  • Ok, so I ended up down a rabbit hole. I listed all the players I can remember who played to an outstanding level regularly when playing in League One or League Two or were Championship standard in our Championship season. Brackets of the league I felt each player had their best season for us.

I started watching Wycombe regularly since the 00/01 season so apologies to the players like Jason Cousins/Dave Carroll. I didn't see you at your best.

They've got a star if they met the criteria for 3+ seasons from my memory.

    Gareth Ainsworth (League Two)

How the hell did I forget about this guy ??

  • Prodigious effort @Bacon_Sandwich.

  • But no Dave Carroll, unless my eyes/powers of observation are really failing me.

Debated it, but Rob Lee has 4 times the England caps and played got bigger clubs.
    We got Regis slightly younger.
What do others think? Cyrille presented trophies at one of my teams awards once so I have an affinity to him, but maybe its an age thing. His best days were before my time, whereas Lee was a high profile prem player when I was watching.

For us? Not particularly I didn't think?
I remember a fanzine of the time describing him as the biggest wet weekend ever.
One of a list of Smith signings that didn't really do it consistently. Williams, Farnell, Rowbotham.
He brought Mccarthy in though, so not entirely bad.

  • *not sure how that autocorrected to Farnell!

  • Farrell was one of the first lower league players to wear coloured boots. I’m sure he was clobbered extra hard every week as a result. Opposition fans certainly used to notice and run him for it.

  • Farrell's direct corner at the Manor ground, where the keeper called for it, the PNL defender on the near post ducked under it, and it went straight in, was one of the few notable things he achieved in a Wanderers shirt.
But he looked half decent when he came back to torment us in a Peterborough top.

  • Martin Taylor ( the very best Wycombe keeper).

Defence - Matt Lawrence - Alfie Mawson - Mike Williamson - Mickey Bell.

Midfield - Steve Brown, Eze, Keith Ryan

Forwards - Dave Carroll, Nathan Tyson, Steve Guppy.

  • Mawson.

  • Nick Freeman.

For anyone watching since the 90s, Dave Carroll is surely the first name on the sheet.
