  • Ivan Toney charged with 232 betting breaches. Might explain why he's not in the England squad.

I suppose betting on Peterborough to embarrass themselves was too much easy money to resist, even though he was playing for them.

  • Presume that's going to be a lengthy ban then ...

  • Yeah, I'm sure it's on a case-by-case basis, but how long was Scott Kashket's ban and for how many counts?

  • Was it 3 months or so for Scotty? That was with mitigating circumstances too during the Orient debacle.

  • 2 months for about 180 bets.

  • Joey Barton got an 18month ban for 1,260 bets if it's a numbers thing.

And not being an accumulation of years of utter douchbaggery of course.

You wonder how how they've found out about those 232 bets.

Has some bookmaker / online worker stitched him up?

Have they tracked it through his credit card? Did he just stroll into a CORALS and whack the bets down under his own name?

Always intrigued at this sort of thing.

  • Not primarily a number of bets thing.

100 £5 bets over five years on Lg2 matches infinitely less serious than one £10000 bet that he would not be first goal scorer in Brentford v Leeds.

  • You would have thought that he earns enough money as it is! Why would you throw it away doing something so stupid??

  • Because betting is an addiction, not an attempt to earn money for most.

  • That advert for Sky Bet that runs in the break on WWTV blows my mind. Sky Bet boasting how many of their "customers" are using a feature to reduce the chance of them ruining their own lives. Imagine the mental gymnastics required to work in that industry and convince yourselves that you're the good guys because you've let people set limits on how much they can bet.

  • Out of interest @drcongo , what are you advocating in respect of gambling.?

In interests of disclosure, I enjoy small bets on sporting events which adds to my enjoyment of them. I don’t bet particularly often and have it totally under control. It’s a positive in my life. The vast majority of those who gamble are similar to me. I fully recognise that for a few, gambling is very much a negative causing severe damage to their and their families lives.

How would you balance those competing interests? (I don’t know the answer to that question by the way)

Not plastering how fun it is before, during, after, and over the participants of every sporting event would be a start.

I’m generally against banning things but the effect of banning tobacco advertising has shown what a powerful hold the industry has over us, consciously or otherwise.

  • A start or the full extent of changes you would wish to see @Lloyd2084 ?

would you ban advertising of alcohol too?

  • Plus cakes, sweets and chocolate and indeed anything that is enjoyable!

  • Whilst being opposed to banning/censorship in principle, I see gambling in the same fold as tobacco & alcohol & would be very happy if all advertising & sponsorship of sports by gambling concerns was prohibited.

P.S. Not a gambler but I am a recovering alcoholic so I sort of get compulsion/addiction

  • On a different note its good to see that FIFA have learnt nothing from the past about the need for good governance, how power corrupts if unconstrained & the need to limit the number of terms anyone can serve as president as they re-elect Infantino for a third term (unopposed).

  • On the face of it there's nothing really new in FIFA uncovered on Netflix but it's still a fairly weighty story, and like most films of this type few of the villains actually get brought to anything like justice.

  • I may be wrong but my understanding is that this goes back to his Peterborough days.

Toney has released a statement today suggesting "it is not the reason that he was not picked for England, but insists that he is thoroughly looking forward to the 2-2 draw with Iran on Monday"

  • At least he clearly bets on himself to score penalties rather than miss them.

  • Him being a gobby tw*t certainly goes back to that time. Haven't really forgiven him for the blatant dive that got him a pen v us and Giles Phillips sent off.

  • With all due respect, I know that gambling can become an addiction and can provide a rush when you have a win but what is the actual point?! You all at all the casinos and betting shops and you never see any of them struggling for money? It was mentioned a long time ago (either in this chat or another) that gambling shouldn't be anywhere near sports just like Alcohol and Tobacco brands are currently excluded from advertising in a sporting concept. Why hasn't this happened in the UK yet?! Is this not another marker for FIFA or UEFA to realise that something needs to be done!?

It seems as though some footballers have too much time of their hands, get bored, have too much money that they don't know what to do with or have a surrounding of people who give VERY bad advice. Surely all clubs need to start looking into this issue and addressing it. Either by giving the players more things to do away from the pitches or providing better education on the risks / other footballing issues?

  • Not news, but what an utter prick Ronaldo is. The game will be a better place once he retires. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/nov/18/manchester-united-to-sue-cristiano-ronaldo-and-ban-him-over-interview

  • It's a bit of a mad situation.

But I like the early irony about they're suing him for false allegations right before talk of banning him from the ground/training ground just before it mentions one allegation was forcing him out!

  • As a footballer, an athlete and for his competitiveness and desire to be the best - I admire him more than any human on the planet.

The way he handles himself has provided me some very awkward questions from my 6 year old boy who idolizes Ronaldo.

My boy burst into tears last Sunday in a match because he got asked to play in defence. I whipped him off and told him he is privileged to be playing at all - we had to leave 14 kids out of the squad. He plays every week because I'm a coach - but nipping that attitude in the bud early!!!

  • 6 is young to be worried about playing in defence isn't it!

Sounds like a big squad you have there!
